The group released their seventh studio album, Sleep Well Beast, on September 8, 2017 via 4AD. It peaked at #2 in the United States on the Billboard 200 and #1 in the UK on the Official Album Charts. The album also took the #1 spot in Canada, Ireland, Croatia and Scotland.

The 10-song self-titled album was released yesterday, August 31st, via Vernon’s PEOPLE distribution imprint – in partnership with Jagjaguwar. The record was subsequently produced by Justin and Aaron with longtime collaborator, Brad Cook, and recorded and mixed by Jonathan Low, primarily at Aaron’s studio Long Pond in Upper Hudson Valley, NY. Each song on Big Red Machine includes a large number of contributors via the PEOPLE collective.
“I don’t think the record would exist without the community that came together to make it,” says Aaron. “We took the music to a certain point, and then we reached out and sent it far and wide, inviting friends to contribute any and all ideas. We’ve viewed the record and the process from a community standpoint. We’re incredibly excited about it, as excited as we would be for any album we might make in another situation that’s more conventional. But this feels like something new—the process felt different and the outcome felt different.”

The National will be playing an official 2018 ACL Music Festival (Late Night Shows) on October 11th at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin, TX. Tickets go on sale this Friday @ 10am CT at this location.
The National now have their very own beer, Reality Based Pils, made in collaboration with the world famous Danish microbrewery Mikkeller. The craft beer will be available in all of Mikkeller HQ’s locations and outlets within the next month.
Mikkeller Mikkel CEO Borg Bjergsø and The National’s Aaron Dessner became friends a few years ago when they were introduced through Jacob Gram Alsing, a mutual friend and COO of Mikkeller. “The National is one of my absolute favorite bands and we have been talking about making a beer together for a long time. I’m excited that it finally happened,” says Bjergsø.
“We are all huge fans of Mikkeller, so to have Mikkel make a recipe specifically for us is very exciting,” says Dessner.
The band and the brew master agreed on a traditional beer style. No fruit, chocolate, chili, coffee, barrel ageing or spontaneous fermentation. Just a straight up pilsner.
“After many years of drinking, tasting and brewing all sorts of different beer styles, I’ve kind of gone back to the roots. The only beer I have in my own fridge at the moment is pilsner, so making that style of beer for The National was an obvious choice,” says Bjergsø. Mikkel’s preference suited the members of the band perfectly.
“We like clear and crisp beers when we come off stage and need to cool down,” says Dessner, who along with his band members chose the name ’Reality Based Pils’ based on an excerpt from their song ’Walk it Back.’ The song quotes the infamous George W. Bush advisor, Karl Rove, who talked about how easy it has become to manipulate facts and how a “reality based community” may be a thing of the past.
“Politicians and others are now able to artificially shape reality using various means of propaganda and media manipulation. So it’s a frightening thing, the world is upside down. Imagining a ‘Reality Based Pils’ also gives us a much needed laugh,” Dessner explains.
Aaron Dessner (The National) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) have made a 10-song record called Big Red Machine that will be released on August 31st via the new PEOPLE (37d03d) digital platform and all streaming services, as well as vinyl, cassette and CD, in partnership with Jagjaguwar.
In 2008, Aaron sent Justin an instrumental sketch of a song called “Big Red Machine” for the album, Dark Was the Night. This was before they had met in person. Justin wrote a song to it, interpreting the Big Red Machine title as a heart. 10 years of friendship and collaboration later, there are 10 more songs. Big Red Machine.
Aaron and Justin developed the material for Big Red Machine over the past two years as the foundation for improvised live sets at the Eaux Claires, Haven and Sounds from a Safe Harbour festivals in the summer of 2017, performing the song sketches with different collaborators each time. The National were one of the headliners at the 2018 NorthSide festival, which runs from June 7th-9th in Aarhus, Denmark. Professionally filmed footage of the group’s performance has been embedded below.

NorthSide Festival, or simply NorthSide, is a three-day music festival held every year in June in Aarhus, Denmark. It has three stages with rotating artists and several sideshow events and happenings. The first festival commenced in 2010 and since 2011, the festival has been held at Ådalen in Åbyhøj. The 2017 festival was attended by 40,000 people each day.
The festival now goes by the name NorthSide to avoid confusion with the Northside Festival in Brooklyn. It is a privately owned festival, owned by Down The Drain Holding, who also owns the Tinderbox music festival in Odense and is shareholder in other music business activities in Denmark.
The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon made a special record together called Big Red Machine. You can listen to four songs at this location.
The National celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their album, Boxer, by performing the record from beginning to end at a very special show in Brussels, Belgium on November 9th, 2017. The recording was later released on vinyl exclusively on Record Store Day (4/21/2018). Now, in July, on Friday the 13th, Boxer will be released digitally and on CD.
