THE FILM
The untold story of anarchic punk-rock desert happenings that sent reverberations through our culture.

Following the screening there will be a live performance by Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) with suspended electric guitar, accompanied by the projected films of Leah Singer.

DESOLATION CENTER
Stuart Swezey | US | 94

Desolation Center is the untold story of a series of Reagan-era guerrilla music and art performance happenings in Southern California, recognized as the inspirations for Burning Man, Lollapalooza and Coachella, paving the way for these collective experiences that have become a crucial part of alternative culture in the 21st century. The feature documentary combines interviews and rare performance footage of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic and more; documenting a time when pushing the boundaries of music, art, and performance felt almost like an unspoken obligation. Directed by the creator and principal organizer of the events, Stuart Swezey, Desolation Center is the true story of how the risky, and at times even reckless, actions of a few outsiders can unintentionally lead to seismic cultural shifts.

Andy Blade ‘Outside View: the Secret Life of a Teenage Punk Rocker’

Billy Duffy: “Back in the late 70s mine and Andy Blade’s paths collided… we had flats in the same house… worked together in the same hospital and were briefly band mates. “Outside View… the secret life of a teenage punk rocker” is his story and I was happy to be asked to write the forward.”

Controversial, incisive & brutally honest – Outside View is original punk stalwart, Andy Blade ’s inside view of a turbulent & raucous rock ‘n’ roll life. Chronicling his formative early years as a naive & inquisitive child of the early 70s & colliding in perfect timing with the advent of punk & his days with punk band, Eater & beyond, this is a no-holds barred highly personal account of life on the front line of music behind the scenes.

Explosive, darkly comic in places, scathingly observant & never flinching in telling it how it was, Outside View is both refreshing & illuminating in its delivery & style: evoking a life of sex, drugs & ripped ‘n torn rock ‘n’ roll with a vigor previously untapped. From Sparks & Be Bop Deluxe obsessions & schoolboy adventures to hanging out at punk Mecca, The Roxy … the highs & lows of a secret punk rock life speed by in an amphetamine blaze of euphoria, fun & the inevitable come down!”

We don’t know what time we play so get there early! See you in the pit and let’s tear it DOWN for the last Warped AZ will ever see.”

Canadian punk rockers Metz will be launching their UK tomorrow (11/22) in London at The Garage. The 4-date trek will wrap up on November 25th in Brighton at The Haunt. A list of dates can be found below.

GET TICKETS

METZ released their third full-length album, Strange Peace, on September 22, 2017 via Sub Pop Records. The album was recorded in Chicago, live off the floor to tape with Steve Albini. The result is a distinct artistic maturation into new and alarming territory, frantically pushing past where the band has gone before, while capturing the notorious intensity of their live show.

“Recording in Chicago was a blast. We tracked fourteen songs in four days. It was the first time we felt confident enough to just play live and roll tape,” guitarist/vocalist Alex Edkins said of the recording process. “Strange Peace is much more diverse and varied than anything we’ve done before, which was exhilarating, but terrifying, too. We took the tapes home to Toronto feeling like we’d made the record we wanted to make.”

Their song “Drained Lake” has been embedded below.

Metz 2017 UK Tour Dates
November 22 – London, UK – The Garage
November 23 – Bristol, UK – The Fleece
November 24 – Leeds, UK – Brudenell Social Club
November 25 – Brighton, UK – The Haunt

Ramones ‘Rocket to Russia’ 40TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION – 3CD/1LP,VINYL

The Ramones released its second album of the calendar year (and third overall) on November 4, 1977, capping off one of the biggest years in the history of punk with Rocket To Russia. Among the band’s best-loved albums, it features classics like “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” and “Rockaway Beach” along with their signature covers of “Do You Wanna Dance?” and “Surfin’ Bird.” It’s also the last album ever recorded by all four founding members, as drummer Tommy Ramone left soon after to focus on writing and producing.

To celebrate the album’s 40-year anniversary, Rhino will release two versions on November 24th. It contains two different mixes of the album: a remastered version of the original and a new 40th Anniversary Tracking Mix by original Rocket To Russia engineer/mixer Ed Stasium. The collection also includes a number of unreleased studio recordings, plus a previously unreleased recording of the band’s 1977 concert in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Deluxe Edition will be produced in a limited and numbered edition and comes packaged in a 12 x 12 hardcover book. Along with the music, the set also features stories about the band by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, details about making the album by Stasium, and extensive liner notes by renowned music writer and co-founder of Creem Magazine, Jaan Uhelszki.

The first disc of the Deluxe Edition features a remastered version of the original stereo mix for Rocket To Russia, plus the 2017 Anniversary Tracking Mix created by Stasium, which provides a back-to-basics version of the album, and a different tracklisting from the 1977 original. The 2017 Anniversary Tracking Mix is also featured on the LP that accompanies the Deluxe Edition.

Stasium provides some details on the new Tracking Mix in the set’s liner notes: “When putting together this new Tracking Mix, I decided to include the versions of ‘I Don’t Care’ and ‘It’s A Long Way Back to Germany,’ since they were recorded during the Rocket To Russia sessions at Mediasound, and are completely different takes that have never been heard before. ‘Sheena’ has been omitted, as it was recorded in a totally different session a few months prior, in-between the Leave Home and Rocket To Russia albums.”

Two dozen rare and unreleased recordings are found on the second disc, including rough mixes from sessions at Mediasound and The Power Station. There’s also an early version of “Needles And Pins” with Tommy on drums, the B-side single mix of “Babysitter,” an alternate version of “It’s A Long Way Back To Germany” with Dee Dee on vocals, an original radio promo with Joey Ramone, and more.

A highlight of this Deluxe Edition is the complete unreleased concert included on the third disc. This never-before-heard multi-track recording of the band’s December 19, 1977 show at the Apollo Centre in Glasgow, Scotland captures the Ramones just a few days before the group recorded the classic live album It’s Alive, and mixed for this 40th Anniversary edition by Ed Stasium. In Glasgow, they played songs from all three studio albums including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Judy Is A Punk,” “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment,” and “California Sun.”
