Ex-Motley Crue’s John Corabi: “Dude, Life on a tour bus w/ Tommy (Lee) is just one continuous standout moment” – Interview – Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars

This excerpt was taken from a full in bloom interview with ex-Motley Crue frontman John Corabi.

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW VIA THE EMBEDDED YOUTUBE CLIP BELOW. You can access the video directly on YouTube @ this location. The interview excerpt has also been transcribed.

DESCRIPTION:

John talks about his relationships with each member of Motley Crue – Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, and Mick Mars.

TRANSCRIPTION:

Were you closest to Mick (Mars) in the band? I know he said before that his favorite Motley album is the ’94 album.

To be honest with you, Mick moved to Nashville in maybe 2014/2015. We just discussed a bunch of Motley shit. He was under the impression that I said this, or I did that. I was under the impression that he did this, and he said that. Once we figured out that neither one of us said what the other thought, Mick and I have been great with each other.

I think, at the time, when I was in the band, I was probably, maybe just a smidgen more close to Tommy (Lee) because Tommy and I toured together. We were in the same bus together. It was just me and Tommy in a bus.

And what, Mick and Nikki in the other?

Yes, and only because Tommy and I were the only drinkers in the band. We were more apt to go out to a nightclub together. But it was funny, I had a weird relationship with each guy in the band. Nikki (Sixx) and I were from the “Ok, we’re going to write lyrics together,” and Nikki was awesome. He was amazing to me when I first joined. But we spent a lot of time together creating shit. Tommy and I also spent a lot of time creating stuff, but just hanging out.

Then I went through a divorce, and I was going to get a condo or an apartment or something, and Mick goes, “Dude, I got a guest house, just stay at my place.” I ended up living with Mick. So, I had a little bit of a separate thing with each guy. But it’s funny, I was kind of like a sounding board for all three of them. So, when I was with Mick, I would say something crazy Nikki or Tommy did, and Mick, in that tone that he has in his voice, would go, “Well, now you know what I’ve dealt with for the last fifteen years with those boneheads.” If I was talking to Tommy, he would talk about Mick and Nikki. Then when I was with Nikki, he would have things to say about Tommy and Mick. Things that they were doing right or wrong. So, I was just kind of floating.

Tommy and I had a shit-ton of fun together. We toured together. We drank together. There were times that I went over – I called it the black hole – I would go over to Tommy’s at noon just to say, “Hey,” and I would get home the next morning at 10 AM. We would just sit there drinking and listening to music. So, I think I was a little closer to Tommy than the other guys, but not by much.

Are there any standout moments on the tour bus with him?

Dude, life on a tour bus with Tommy is just one continuous standout moment. That guy will, and I don’t mean this as a slag, he will eternally be energy, eight-year-old, just curious about everything…I’m only going around once, so I’m going to cram as much as I can into this life. And I got to appreciate it. I love Tommy. That’s the only thing I miss about how things turned out with us is that, more than anything, I felt like I lost a couple of cool friends.

How Old Is Mötley Crüe Guitarist Mick Mars?

The excerpt below was taken from a full in bloom interview with the first official photographer to have full access to Mötley Crüe, Don Adkins. You can read the entire Mötley Crüe segment @ this location.

full in bloom: How old were the guys in Mötley Crüe at that time?

Don Adkins: I think Vince and Nikki were around 21 or 22, Tommy was 18, and Mick, who had already been in bands for a long time, was somewhere around 40.

full in bloom: Do what?…..Mick was 40 in 1981 / 1982?

Don: Yeah.

full in bloom: I knew he was older, but I thought he was probably around 30 when Motley Crue started to make it.

Don: No. He was 40-ish.

full in bloom: Almost 40 or over 40?

Don: He was over 40. You won’t get anybody to admit that, but you can probably do some research and find out. He’s really that old.

full in bloom: That’s amazing.

Don: Yeah.

full in bloom: He seems like a really cool, laid back, quiet guy. What was he like?

Don: Yes. He was more inward. He had a very interesting, seasoned way of talking. He was not as talkative as the rest of the guys, but you listened more when he talked. Nikki or Vince would go, “Oh, that’s rad, dude,” and Mick would just go, “That’s maniacal” (laughs).

If Don is right, Mick would be over 80 years old. Hard to imagine.

Here’s an excerpt from an interview Alice Cooper did with the Chicago Tribune in 1987:

I think a lot of people still have to be exposed to Alice,” Cooper, 39, explained. ”As far as I`m concerned, I have to treat everything now like a new career. Everything that happened before `Constrictor` was another era; `Constrictor` was the first one for this generation.

”I`m finding it`s really not that hard to do, either. When people come to a concert, they walk out believers. The hard thing is to get them there; they figure that `this guy`s been around for 17 years` or something like that, like I`m too old. It`s funny, because you have bands out there posing as 22-year-olds who aren`t; I mean, (Motley Crue guitarist) Mick Mars is 37-that`s just two years younger than I am.”

If Alice is right, Mick would be 70 years old, which seems a bit more reasonable.

Mötley Crüe’s Mick Mars, “While I Was Clearly Joking About The Free Tickets….” Tour Statement 2019

Mick Mars: While I was clearly joking about the free tickets that night on TMS, I was also deeply convinced that we would never ever be touring again.  I would have never expected to be facing a whole new generation of fans demanding to see us play.  In fact, tour with Motley Crue comes at a weird place in time, since my solo record is almost complete after such a long time of writing and recording.  But, I put our fans first.  Anyways, I am eating a lot of crow and humble pic this Thanksgiving for those remarks and accept that some of you see this as me being dishonest.  I said what I said and I was wrong.  Peace

John Corabi Talks Mick Mars Solo Album

An excerpt from the full in bloom interview with John Corabi has been embedded below. The ex-Motley Crue frontman says Mick is working with a singer-songwriter and “wants to do something a little heavier.”

Two clips of the most recent Corabi and Mars collaboration (“Gimme Blood” & “Shake the Cage”) have also been embedded below.

Interview Video Excerpt:

__________________________________________________________________

full in bloom: Immediately following Motley Crue’s final tour, you went into the studio with Mick Mars to lay down some vocals on his highly anticipated solo album. I know you got very busy and had to bow out, but has there been any movement on that project?

John Corabi: No, you know Mick called me and asked me if I would sing a couple of tracks, which I did. Then we talked about doing more together, but then it came down to my schedule between the Dead Daisies and my solo career and in trying to squeeze in time for Mick…in all fairness, I didn’t want to half-ass anything with him. If I was going to do something with him, I wanted to give him 100% or nothing, and he totally understood that. For Mick, this record he is going to do, it’s a very important record because he’s the only guy in the original Motley, and some of the replacement guys, that has not done a record outside of the Motley camp.

full in bloom: Is he still working on the record?

John Corabi: Yeah. I actually know one of the guys he is working with in Nashville. I don’t want to say any names because that’s Mick’s thing, so I’ll let Mick talk about it. But I know a singer-songwriter that he’s been working with who is stupidly talented and I can’t wait to hear what these guys are coming up with. It going to be pretty awesome.

full in bloom: I thought he and Tom Keifer might be a good match.

John Corabi: I personally thought Mick should do something more on the bluesy side, but, on the other hand, and maybe I’m not understanding him properly, but Mick wants to do something heavier. I don’t know where it’s going to be or what it’s going to sound like, but I know the singer-songwriter that he’s working with and I can’t wait to hear it. I’m just as excited as all the other Motley fans out there. I can’t wait to hear it.

Nikki Sixx Doesn’t Think Mick Mars is Underrated

Is Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars Underrated?

Nikki Sixx:  “I don’t think he is underrated at all. I know people respect his playing. I do. Always told Mick (Mars) I was his biggest fan. I saw him play when I was 17 years old.  Mind blowing. Later I asked him to to play a slide solo on “Piece of Your Action” the way he played the first night I saw him.”

Mötley Crüe’s Mick Mars Was Forced To Sell Prized Guitar Collection During Late ’90s

Former Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars recently spoke to Guitar World about his guitar collection.  A few excerpts have been posted below.

“I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs over the years,” Mars explains. “The ’72 Les Paul Custom that I used to play in the early days is now hanging in a Hard Rock Café somewhere in Florida. I didn’t want to let go of that guitar, but I was forced to do it. I don’t miss the pointy guitars. They all sounded really bad to me, and I hated all of them. They just didn’t work for me. Companies kept giving me all of these different guitars to try, and I would end up trying to break them. Now they’re all either kindling or I sold them off long ago.”

When Mötley Crüe hit a rough patch during the late Nineties, Mars was forced to sell off many of his prized vintage guitars.

“I’ve slowly and carefully rebuilt my collection,” he says. “I got really serious about collecting guitars again about 10 or 12 years ago. I now have about 100 guitars. I managed to keep some really cool instruments, but I like to have a lot of different things to play around with, so I’m always adding something new to my collection.

“I have guitars from the Fifties and Sixties as well as a few Seventies guitars. Some are really cool, and some are my player guitars. I don’t have very many guitars that I don’t play much. Even if I don’t take a particular guitar on tour because it’s too valuable and difficult to replace, it usually gets played in the studio.

“In the studio I go for a lot of different tones,” he explains. “I never record an album using just one guitar and one amp. Sometimes I’ll start a track with a stock Strat and do overdubs with something funky, like an old Harmony. I like to put something that sounds trashy behind something that sounds really good. That makes the track jump. I’ll use just about any guitar you can imagine in the studio. It’s all about what you do with the different tones and how you mix and match them.”

Although the Strat remains Mars’ favorite guitar, he also has a soft spot for Telecasters. Old-school Mötley Crüe fans may remember the Telecaster-shaped Kramers that Mars played on tour during the mid Eighties. “That was a transitional guitar for me,” he recalls. “Nobody was playing Teles back then, so that inspired me to play one. The problem with those Kramers is that they were really heavy. I loved the way they looked, though.”
