Dave Grohl is out promoting the new Foo Fighters album and shared a very old‑school stunt he pulled during a recent chat with Stephen Colbert. He explained that, on a day off, he decided to make his own advance copies of the record and hide them around Southern California for fans to find. “I’m still old school,” he told Colbert. “I love doing things myself and I had a day off and thought, ‘You know what I’ll do? I’ll burn twenty CDs of our album before it’s come out, and me and my daughter Harper will get construction paper, and we’ll make album covers and then I’ll go run around and hide them in places all over the San Fernando Valley.’”

Grohl tucked the homemade CDs into random spots in various stores, which led to some awkward moments. “I’d walk in and I’d have them hidden so I’m already sketchy enough. Then I see the security guard person is eyeing me and it looks like I’m shoplifting when I’m doing the opposite,” he joked. “I almost got busted in a Ralphs – I went back to the charcoal aisle, stuck it under a bag of Kingsford and as I’m walking out the security guard was looking at it like ‘what?’” After planting the discs, the band dropped hints online. “Then we posted little clues. It turned into like a scavenger hunt,” Grohl said. “And who doesn’t like one of those?”

On top of that, Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, and guitarist Chris Shiflett recently appeared on the Track Star YouTube channel to test their music trivia chops. The trio were quizzed on bands that helped shape their sound, including The Clash, Van Halen, The Melvins, and hardcore pioneers Minor Threat. Mendel singled out Minor Threat’s low end as a huge influence, saying of bassist Steve Hansgen, “I based my entire early years of trying to get a bass tone off that guy.”
