Dave Grohl’s mom Virginia Grohl has been making the rounds promoting her new book ‘From Cradle To Stage: Stories From the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars’. The book documents her own personal experience plus includes interviews with a dozen other moms of music superstars, including Pharrell, Amy Winehouse, Dr. Dre, Michael Stipe, Geddy Lee and Adam Levine. Last night Dave and his mom were on The Late Show with Steve Colbert. You can now watch the full interview above.

Some highlights from the video:

Colbert reading from Dave’s sixth grade report card:
Respecting Authority – Needs Improvement
Is Courteous – Needs Improvement
Accepts Responsibility – Unsatisfactory
Exercises Self Control – Needs Improvement
Exerts Effort – Unsatisfactory
Begins & Completes Work on Time – Unsatisfactory

Grohl responded, “I have to be honest, I was kicking ass up until the first grade and it was all downhill from there.” He later says, “I made the mistake of showing my kids my report cards once because I thought it would be funny and that backfired on me.”

Toward the end of the interview Colbert asked if Kurt Cobain’s suicide changed her relationship with her son. “I think it did,” she said. “It was such a dark, sad time. David came home after that so we all sort of had to regroup and yes, we talked a lot. We’ve always been able to say everything to each other. But that was a particularly sort of incredible time. It’s hard to express.”
