Matt Damon is inspired by Good Will Hunting to crack the code on SNL sketches.
In the promo for the May 9 episode of SNL, Matt Damon takes a playful trip down memory lane with a nod to his Oscar‑nominated film Good Will Hunting. The clip opens on cast members Jeremy Culhane and Sarah Sherman huddled over a Good Will Hunting–style chalkboard, covered in elaborate “comedy equations” as they try to crack the code for the perfect SNL sketch. Damon walks in and asks what they are working on.
“We’re trying to figure out the perfect SNL sketch. Experts have been trying to crack this for years,” Sherman explains. Culhane adds, dead serious, “Yeah, Ferrell got close once, but ultimately it drove him insane.” Spotting the chalkboard setup, the Departed star notes that the movie they are riffing on is nearly 30 years old. Both cast members insist they have never seen it, with Sherman shrugging, “Never seen it, dude,” and Culhane offering, “Grew up in a cult, never seen a movie.”
Eventually, the two leave Damon alone with the board, and he quietly starts working out the sketch formula himself. When Sherman and Culhane return the next morning, they are unimpressed with what they find. Realizing Damon is responsible, he panics, grabs a mop, and pretends he has just been cleaning, only for Culhane to point out that he is holding the mop upside down.
