Ritchie Blackmore on Jeff Beck: “He could reach up into the stars and make magic” – 2023

Ritchie Blackmore:

First met Jeff Beck around 64-65 and it was a session where we were both playing guitars and Jimmy Page was producing. I couldn’t believe how incredible he was, not only with his technique but his sound too. I became a fan of his ever since. He could reach up into the stars and make magic with his playing. His choice of notes were always absolutely perfect. This whole thing is a shock. We shall always remember Jeff as the best rock and roll player.

Graham Bonnet Pays Tribute to Cozy Powell: “The master, the g.o.a.t., the best that ever lived” – 2022 – Rainbow – MSG

Graham Bonnet: It’s that time of year again where we all get together and pay tribute to the master, the g.o.a.t., the best that ever lived…… Cozy Powell. It’s hard not to feel sad on this day because I loved him so much, and he was taken away far too soon, but I’ve chosen to celebrate him and feel so blessed that I got to make as many records and play as many shows with him that I did. There are 1 million stories I could tell you with Cozy but before I do, I want to mention that it was Cozy who took me in and taught me the ropes. Without him, I don’t think I would be where I am or have the body of work that I do. He really believed in me and brought me into a lot of projects that might not have been interested if I hadn’t come recommended by Cozy.

I know I’ve told the story before about the famous “haircut incident.” It’s become embellished over the years and no, Colin was not parked outside my room preventing me from leaving to get a haircut and no, I did not sneak out a window. That being said, Ritchie was quite pleased when my hair had started to grow a bit. He thought “Yes, finally our singer will look like the rest of us,” when I did indeed notice the barbershop when out and about. That night, when I got on stage to do my part, Ritchie took one look at my fresh haircut and went behind his amp and refused to come out for the rest of the night because he was so angry with me. The next day he called a meeting of the band, and when everyone arrived in his room, Cozy asked Ritchie “What’s going on, what are we meeting about?” Ritchie responded by saying “Well, it’s Graham’s hair.” Everyone’s mouth dropped open and Cozy lost it with laughter and the rest of the band followed suit.

I wish Cozy were here right now to reminisce and laugh about the old days. I raise my glass to you Cozy on your 75th birthday and hope wherever you are, you are celebrating too.

I’m posting this lineup promo for you to enjoy the purity and style that was Cozy.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BLACKMORE’S NIGHT

Blackmore’s Night were founded in 1997 by legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and award-winning lyricist and singer Candice Night to stage and explore their love for traditional Medieval and Folk-Rock music. Together, they created a band that like very few others is a prime example of truthfulness and creative integrity.

The band’s debut album “Shadow Of The Moon” (1997) was not only Blackmore’s deliberate radical cut from his previous life as celebrated rockstar in Deep Purple and Rainbow; it was a ground-breaking statement of his artistic ideals: mainly acoustic music, influenced by the songs of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with a touch of genius that made them sound contemporary. “Shadow Of The Moon” was a milestone album. It encompasses everything that Blackmore’s Night stand for to this day: beautiful melodies and warm atmospheres that are able to reach the soul as well as joyful songs to dance to and to celebrate.

The 25th Anniversary Edition of “Shadow Of The Moon” was converted in HD audio from the original recording, and it has been fully remixed, allowing the original performance to shine in its original glory. The original iconic artwork has been refreshed and reworked to celebrate the anniversary. Two previously unreleased acoustic recordings will be part of this reissue: “Spirit Of The Sea” and “Shadow Of The Moon”, both recorded in an intimate home session by Candice and Ritchie in 2022. All physical first print editions will also carry an exclusive “Shadow Of The Moon” documentary on DVD as bonus.

“It’s hard to believe that 25 years have gone by since the snowy nights spent by the fireplace writing these songs. Much has changed since those early days, but the magic of the music still shines as brightly as it did back then. We feel truly blessed to have been able to bring these songs to the world, and do so again, in this remixed reissue proving they truly do stand the test of time. For 25 years we have graced historical venues stages worldwide and now we are able to revisit again, with you, this beautiful version of “Shadow Of The Moon”. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed revisiting those early days. We find that the songs are still timeless…” (Candice Night & Ritchie Blackmore)

Graham Bonnet on Meeting Ronnie Romero: “There was an instant bond between the two of us” – 2022

Graham Bonnet:

Last Saturday at the Michael Schenker show, I had the distinct pleasure of being introduced to vocalist Ronnie Romero. There was an instant bond between the two of us. We have so much in common as musicians but also as human beings. He’s a really great person. I was very happy to see him playing with all my old pals from MSG and doing an absolutely bang-up job!

Graham Bonnet on Joe Lynn Turner’s New Look: “I was moved to tears today when I saw it” – 2022 – Rainbow – Deep Purple – Alcatrazz

Graham Bonnet:

Hi all. Graham here. I’m posting this photo of my friend Joe Lynn Turner because I was moved to tears today when I saw it. Joe exemplifies the meaning of rockstar. His bravery is staggering. This industry is ruthless (especially in our genre), particularly when it comes to hair.

I still hear the tale about Ritchie Blackmore posting a guard at my hotel door to keep me from getting a haircut. BTW, that never happened, although he was so pissed when I did visit the barber. But I digress……

I don’t know if Joe will see this, but I want him to know how proud I am of him and how moved I was at his honesty. You have blazed a trail today, Joe. If you are reading this, I want you to know that I never realized what a beautiful man you were until I saw this photo. ♥️

Ritchie Blackmore Says Freddie Mercury’s Voice was a Cross Between Ronnie James Dio & an Opera Singer – VIDEO – Queen – Brian May – Deep Purple – Rainbow

Ritchie Blackmore:

Queen, I first heard them doing, it was a song about a train. This is about 1974-75. I can’t remember the title, but I was very impressed with the guitar playing and, of course, the singing. I noticed that Freddie Mercury had a cross between Ronnie Dio’s voice and almost like an operatic voice. To me, he was a true star. He knew exactly how to milk an audience. What a musician.

Some of the stuff they put down, all those four-part harmonies, very, very clever stuff. Of course, there’s Brian (May), who’s probably one of the nicest guys in the business and a brilliant guitar player to boot. I worked with Brian on other stuff, and he’s such a nice man. He’s a bit too tall, but he can’t help that. Wonderful band. Excellent band.

I was very surprised they did so well in America. America, I’ve noticed, like the basic chord stuff. They like the blues stuff, the three-chord stuff, which would be like a Stevie Ray Vaughan. With Queen, you have probably twenty-five chords and a lot of changes. I’ve noticed the American market doesn’t usually go for that. I’m surprised they made it so bit over here. For me, that was nice to see.

From a 2020 Guitar World interview with Brian May:

Brian May:

Another great hero of mine. He’s crazy. I mean, yeah, it was extraordinary watching him. I think he’s one of the most dangerous guitar players ever. And I mean that is in the best possible way. Beautiful! He was there way ahead of any of us.”

Ritchie Blackmore on Graham Bonnet: “I was seriously contemplating hitting him over the head with my guitar” – Rainbow – Deep Purple – Alcatrazz

In 1979, vocalist Graham Bonnet was approached to join UK glam rock band The Sweet as replacement for Brian Connolly. However, he was soon chosen by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to replace Ronnie James Dio as the new singer for Rainbow. Blackmore shares a story from the Rainbow/Bonnet era.

Ritchie Blackmore:

I said, “Graham, our audience expects you to be a bit more not shaved, bit of long hair, a bit more dirty. He said, “Yeah, well, I used to have long hair,” and we’re going, “ok.” I went: “Yeah, but our audience doesn’t want that Las Vegas style jacket and smooth hair. They want a rough looking guy.” So, I thought, if we let him grow his hair longer for the first night in Newcastle, which was about three months away, at least we could get his hair to his collar – rough him up a bit.

Graham Bonnet w/ long hair

He kept threatening to have his hair cut and really short. That’s not going to work with the fans in ’79-’80, everybody was like, the look – long hair, rough, whatever. So, we got Colin Hart (Rainbow’s Tour Manager) to room next to him. I said: “You know what? You make sure Graham doesn’t leave his room. He might go and get his hair cut.” It’s just starting to get a bit longer, and he’s looking a bit rough. Colin goes: “Leave it to me. He won’t get past me.” He kept his door open, and he was right next to Graham’s room. I said, “Good.” At least he’s now looking a bit the part that we can kind of play to our rough audience. They don’t want to see a smooth Las Vegas guy. So, what happens is, Colin calls me up, “Oh, no, guess what?” I went, “What?” He goes, “He got out the back window, got into a taxi and has had his hair cut.” I was seething at the time.

It’s the whole principle of the thing. It doesn’t matter if you’re losing your hair, or whatever. He went out and purposely shaved his hair. He shaved it short like he was going to appear as David Copperfield. I was seething. And he knew, we told him a thousand times not to cut his hair, “Just let it grow and be natural, and I think you’ll be accepted by the fans.” Nope, went out, came back. Of course, he looked ridiculous.

On stage that night, I was seriously contemplating hitting him over the head with my guitar. He was singing to the audience and doing his bit. I saw the back of his shaved neck, and I went, “I’m just going to put my guitar across his head,” but then I’m like, “I’d be back in prison again.” But I really was so tempted to just take it and go, “Whack.” Because he had done it deliberately out of contempt. He knew that to be in our band, it was about roughness, and he had gone out of his way to be Mr. Smooth again.

After that, there was no communication. It was a total breakdown. It was like: “You’re in another world. Go to Las Vegas. You need to be in Las Vegas. We have our audience, which is heavy rockers. They don’t need to see Mr. Las Vegas.”

Graham Bonnet:

It wasn’t my plan to be weird or anything like that. I cut my hair at the suggestion from my then girlfriend. She said, “Why don’t you do something different?” My hair used to get in the way when I was recording, and I was using headphones, so I went for it. I went for the button up shirt with jeans. It was a very 1950s style, which fit in the sense that it was the music that I grew up on. When I was a kid, I would listen to Little Richard, Buddy Holly. I’ve always liked that kind of music and the style of the time or fashion if you will. I stuck with it because it’s what I was I was comfortable with.

When I went for the audition with Rainbow in London, I said to my manager, “You know, I’m not going to fit with these guys. I just don’t think I’m the right guy for this.” They looked different than I did, and I really didn’t think I was right for that band. I had never heard of them because I was in my own world. I never listened to hard rock or heavy metal or whatever. -from an interview with SleazeRoxx.com

I didn’t know about Rainbow at all. I didn’t have a clue about them! I knew Deep Purple, but I certainly didn’t know about Rainbow at that time. Roger Glover got in touch with me and asked if I wanted to come to France to audition for the band. He added that they had already auditioned 79 singers (laughs)! I had nothing to lose. So, I bought a couple of Rainbow albums and flew to France.

I wasn’t into rock at that time. I preferred more R&B stuff, like Stevie Wonder and, of course, The Beatles, my favorite band ever. I wasn’t so much into Purple or Zeppelin because I preferred the singing side of a record and not so much the technical aspect of a song.

Anyway, when I started singing “Mistreated,” I was so loud they started laughing immediately because the microphone wasn’t even on (laughs)! When I sang a little bit with the microphone on, they said after a couple of minutes that the job was mine! It was that simple. -from an interview with Rockpages.gr

Ritchie Blackmore: John Bonham would always tell Zeppelin, “I’m leaving the band. I can’t go back to America again.” – 2022 – VIDEO – Deep Purple – Led Zeppelin – Rainbow

Ritchie Blackmore: John Bonham would always tell Zeppelin: “I’m leaving the band. I can’t go back to America again. I can’t do that.” So, Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin’s manager) used to go, “Hey, come to the garage, I want to show you something.” He’d go, “What?” They’d go to his garage and there’s a new Lamborghini, just what Bonzo wanted.

John Bonham:

“Wow, look at that.”

Peter Grant:

“That’s yours for coming to America.”

John Bonham:

“Well, yeah, alright.”

And that’s how he kept coming. But there were a couple of moments there where he ended up crying because he wanted to go home. He didn’t want to be in America, missed his wife, didn’t want to be in a big band. He wanted to be in a small band in Birmingham, just playing. He didn’t care about all that fame.

From John Bonham: The Powerhouse Behind Led Zeppelin:

John Bonham:

“Sometimes touring gets a bit wearing, but that’s only because I’m married with kids at home. I’ve never gotten pissed off with the actual touring. I enjoy playing – I could play every night. It’s just being away that gets you down sometimes. I still enjoy going through different towns that we haven’t been to before. But you get fed up with places like New York because they’re not interesting anymore.”

“I’ve got worse. I have terribly bad nerves all the time. Once we start into ‘Rock And Roll’ I’m fine. I just can’t stand sitting around, and I worry about playing badly – and if I do then I’m really pissed off. If I play well, I feel fine.

Everybody in the band is the same, and each has some little thing they do before we go on, like pacing about or lighting a cigarette. It’s worse at festivals. You might have to sit around for a whole day and you daren’t drink because you’ll get tired and blow the gig. So you sit drinking tea in a caravan with everybody saying, “Far out, man.””

We once did six tours of America in 15 months.

Ritchie Blackmore to Dave Davies on Twitter: “Death of a Clown” is still a brilliant song – 2022 – Captured in the Wild – The Kinks – Deep Purple – Rainbow

Dave Davies:

I don’t mean to sound like a grumpy old bastard, but England’s gotten so expensive, you used to be able to go out with 10 quid and get a little meal – there’s no England now certainly ain’t now – 10 quid will get you two sandwiches at Sainsburys if you’re lucky, I feel for people.

Ritchie Blackmore:

Well, I AM a grumpy old bastard. I love England but had to leave because of taxes in ’75. 82% taxes at the time. I also feel for the people living in England, how much they have to pay for everything. But Death of a Clown is still a brilliant song.

Ritchie Blackmore on Jeff Beck & Jimi Hendrix: “I always thought of Jimi Hendrix as ‘the wild man of Borneo,’ and there he is, fixing his hair in the mirror”

full in bloom: In April, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was a guest DJ on SiriusXM’s Guitar Greats.

Ritchie Blackmore on Jimi Hendrix via SiriuxXM’s Guitar Greats:

Ritchie Blackmore:

When Jimi Hendrix came to England, Jeff Beck came up to me and said, ‘Ritchie, we’ve got to do something about this guy,’ and I said, ‘Who are you talking about?’ He said: ‘Jimi Hendrix. He’s killing everybody over here. He’s upsetting everybody.’ I’m like, ‘Well Jeff, if you can’t do it, nobody else is going to do it’ because I always thought of Jeff as being the best rock player.

I followed Hendrix because I thought the way he used riffs in a riff, it had magical moments. Brilliant guitar player and he also looked like he was from the moon. Really, in a way, he didn’t have to play the guitar because he looked so strange and different to the typical English musician, and it worked. Unfortunately, it only worked for three years, but he certainly set the world alight.

I only met him once. It was in the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, and I was going into the toilet and he was playing with his hair or something. I always thought of Jimi Hendrix as ‘the wild man of Borneo,’ and there he is, fixing his hair in the mirror. That was the only time I met him and we kind of nodded to each other and that was it. So I never really got to know him, yet he certainly set the world on fire.

Jeff Beck on Jimi Hendrix via Classic Rock:

Jeff Beck:

When I saw Jimi we knew he was going to be trouble. And by ‘we’ I mean me and Eric [Clapton], because Jimmy [Page] wasn’t in the frame at that point. I saw him at one of his earliest performances in Britain, and it was quite devastating. He did all the dirty tricks – setting fire to his guitar, doing swoops up and down his neck, all the great showmanship to put the final nail in our coffin. I had the same temperament as Hendrix in terms of ‘I’ll kill you’, but he did in such a good package with beautiful songs.

Reporters got the number of my flat the day he died. I was suicidal at the time, because my girlfriend had dumped me. And to have to the deal with a call saying “Jimi Hendrix is dead. How do you feel about that?” At first I thought it was a bloody hoax, but as the day wore on I realized it was tragically true.
