Peter Gabriel on Russia/Ukraine War: “This invasion is one man’s barbaric decision” – 2022

Peter Gabriel: Very shocked to see so many Ukrainians being killed, a totally unnecessary war being deliberately started in Europe. This invasion is one man’s barbaric decision. This action is a war crime, and whatever else happens, he should never be allowed to leave Russian soil again.

Peter Gabriel Pays Tribute to Hossam Ramzy, “You leave a big hole”- Percussionist Dies @ 65

Peter Gabriel:  Very sad to learn of the death of the wonderful Hossam. The soulful percussionist who was a great champion for many musicians from his part of the world and who introduced me to many Arabic rhythms.

Hossam was always excited about playing music, mixing styles and cultures, and was a key contributor on the Passion, Passion Sources and Big Blue Ball records.

A great musician and a good friend to Real World, to WOMAD and to me.

You leave a big hole.

The Life Story of Hossam Ramzy in His Own Voice Watch Now »
Hossam Ramzy was born in Cairo, Egypt. His musical career began early when at the age of three he was given his first drum, an Egyptian Tabla…..

Hossam’s passion and huge talent for percussion was noted by his family, many of whom were themselves involved in the arts. Hossam was encouraged to master his craft and studied under leading Cairo music teachers.

A move to Saudi Arabia led him to join with many Bedouin tribes which gave the young Hossam a rich insight into the cultural origins of Middle Eastern music and became the inspiration for many of his later rhythmic directions. In the mid-1970’s Hossam came to England, and enjoyed great success as a Jazz drummer working with many respected Jazz musicians like Andy Sheperd and Geoff Williams. But as he began looking for new dimensions of percussive sounds, he found himself turning full circle back to his first love, the Egyptian Drums, and the thrilling dance rhythms of the Middle East. Hossam then incorporated all his rhythmic experience into creating a new sound that is heard on hundreds of the world leading albums recorded today.

The club dance scene of 2001 was taken by a storm with Hossam’s No# 1 hit EDONY that has topped the dance charts worldwide.

The distinctive sound of his Arabian & North African string arrangements, his percussion and exciting rhythms on his albums caught the imagination of Peter Gabriel and Hossam was invited to perform on PASSION and later US, and has just completed the working on Peter’s new unreleased album. Hossam has gone on to work with many top musicians including Joan Armatrading & Mary Wilson.

Hossam is known worldwide for creating string arrangements and percussion and produced many songs for the world’s leading artists such as:
Yesim Salkim, Celick Erici, Cheb Khaled, Tarkan, Rachid Taha, Faudel, The Gypsy Kings and the list just goes on.

In 1994 Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex-Led Zeppelin) invited Hossam to bring together a band of Arabian musicians and work on their reunion album ‘No Quarter – Unledded’ for which he was rewarded GOLD then PLATINUM discs. This led to Hossam joining Page & Plant on their historic reunion 1995/96 world tour.

During this historic tour, the following headline appeared:

“Hossam Ramzy, The fuel behind the Robert Plant & Jimmy Page’s Unledded World Tour.”
© The Chicago Times

In November 2001 at the 25th Anniversary of the ARC Music record company, with whom Hossam has released 31 Albums in his own name for the Egyptian dance, he was awarded a PLATINUM disc for being their top selling artist, over 200,000 record sales.

Hossam built his own state of the art recording environment DRUMZY STUDIO, in which he has the latest in recording technology mixed in with old; and unique sounds of the best names in recording equipment. With all this available to his fingertips, he can now create many new sounds of the old traditional grooves and Arabian & North African Samples & Loops of which he has no less than 80,000, all in perfect BPM, and ready to use.

With his album Rock The Tabla, Hossam was nominated for Best Artist in the Songlines Music Awards 2012, an accolade which he calls “a great honour”.

Hossam’s goal is to increase awareness of Egyptian music and rhythms by injecting them into the world’s music through collaborations with other artists.

Steve Hackett Interview 2019

Steve Hackett:  Check out this interview here

EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW

Rolling Stone:  Tell me how the idea came about to do Selling England by the Pound straight through on tour.

Steve Hackett:  In recent years, I’ve been doing 50 percent solo stuff and 50 percent Genesis stuff when I tour. I figured those are well-known songs and I’m entitled to do that. A lot of it rates high in the affection of fans and I’m happy to do that. I’ve always cherry-picked what I thought was the best of all the eras, but if I had to look at a favorite album I’d say it was Selling England by the Pound.

Funny enough, in 1973 when we did that album, we could barely get a gig anywhere in the States. We were a young and struggling band at that time and John Lennon gave an interview and said Genesis was one of the bands he was listening to. I was particularly proud of that album which coincided with that. It still didn’t mean we could get gigs anywhere, but that’s how it was in those days. The information revolution had yet to happen. You were on one coast or another and the other coast was another planet.

It was a tricky time, but it gave us hope that if he liked it that others might follow. It was high in my affections. I think it’s the best Genesis album, at least the best one we did with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. Phil was starting to develop as a singer on his own. He did one of the tracks on his own, “More Fool Me.” He was lead singer on that and did his own harmonies on it.

We do authentic versions of these songs, plus we include an extra track that was supposed to go on the album but didn’t happen. It was a track written by Peter Gabriel and me called “Deja Vu.” I include that like a sort of director’s-cut/deleted-scene idea. We’ve been playing that live and it’s going down very, very well with audiences. There’s something particularly stirring about the melody that we originally came up with on that. I’m proud of all that, so that’s the Selling England side of the story.

Tell me what you remember about creating the “Firth of Fifth” guitar solo, which is one of your great moments in Genesis.

Steve:  Tony wrote the song and originally that was going to be played on piano, and certainly it worked like that. Pete doubled it on flute originally and I thought, “Well, there’s an acoustic moment.” But then I started playing it on electric guitar. I just got the equipment I’d use for the next few years. There was the Echoplex, so suddenly I’m working with an echo unit. And it happened to work particularly well with the pedal I had and the fuzzbox I had back in the day. Fortunately, most of the time it would feed back on a high F sharp when I hit that, so it sounded as if the notes went on forever. And it was a particularly good melody played on guitar. Played on piano, it sounds like a French Impressionistic thing. But when played on guitar, it’s got something Egyptian or Middle Eastern. Once I started playing it on guitar, Tony was like, “Oh, let’s do it as a band. Let’s do it with big keyboards.”

The song “I Know What I Like” was the poppiest thing Genesis had done up to that point. Were you trying to make a hit or did it just come out that way?

Steve:  I had this guitar riff that I used to play with Phil. I remember Mike [Rutherford] said, “It sounds too much like the Beatles and George Harrison.” However, we persisted with it from 1972 to 1973 and the band jammed along and came up with some lyrics. It ended up being a very short version of the song. The version we used to do live was something like six minutes long. I was very pleased it came out the way it did. It became a singalong chorus and our first hit. But I don’t think the album was full of would-be hit singles. It was still an album. I think we didn’t compromise anything to produce the album. It just so happened there was this little ditty on it called “I Know What I Like.”

We didn’t expect it to be a hit, but when I talked to journalists, I used to say, “Have you heard our new hit single?” As if that would sway public opinion. I joked about that and the joke ended up being a reality. I think everyone should do that whenever they release a single. “Have you heard our hit single?” And just hope that scam pays off.

Peter Gabriel Pays Tribute to Kofi Annan, “Today we have suffered a great loss”

Peter Gabriel penned the following tribute to Kofi Annan, the first black African to lead the United Nations, who died at the age of 80.

Peter Gabriel:

“Today we have suffered a great loss – Kofi Annan, Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations and our much-loved chair of the Elders.

“All those of us who work with the Elders are in shock. We have lost not just a great and inspiring leader but a good friend and one of the great peacemakers of our time, rightfully recognised by a Nobel prize.

“He believed in the power of quiet diplomacy and in the essential right of all to peace – and that all disputes in the end have to be settled around a table, so the sooner the serious talk begins, the sooner you can put an end to the suffering.

“He adopted many causes, but always championed human rights, including access to healthcare, education and opportunity. He was one of the first leaders to realise that the trickle of refugees and migrants would turn into a flood of desperate people, with thousands of completely avoidable deaths, prison-like refugee camps, along with unwanted immigration that would fan the flames of populist racist politics.

“Occasionally he was criticised for caution, but it was so obvious, the more you got to know him, that it was his underlying passion for peace, justice and his basic compassion that determined all his actions.

“Kofi was a devoted family man and it was always a pleasure to see him and Nane together, their love and respect for each other a lesson in itself.

“After retirement, he undertook a work schedule that would have been punishing for someone half his age, and when Richard Branson and I joined him at his 80th birthday party earlier this year, he was as full of plans, as ever, of what we could all do to improve life for those least well off all over the world.

“It was an honour to get to know this extraordinary man and to learn what a warm and kind person he really was, whose gentle nature and humour, along with a very infectious laugh, could illuminate as much as it could melt away tensions.
The world seems a lot emptier without him.”

Peter Gabriel / Lou Reed Guitarist, Steve Hunter, Set to Release Final Album

Steve Hunter is set to release his new album, Before the Lights Go Out, on October 1, 2017. Short clips of all ten tracks can be heard above.

Hunter is an American guitarist, primarily a session player best known for his collaborations with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. He has played some of the coolest riffs in rock history – the opening solos on Aerosmith’s version of “Train Kept A Rollin'”, the acoustic intro on Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill” and he wrote the legendary intro interlude that made Lou Reed’s live version of “Sweet Jane.”

Unfortunately, Hunter is going blind due to his bout with Pigmentary Glaucoma. The guitarist says he plans to retire from making his own music but will still be able to play guitar and do sessions. The Steve Hunter Fan Club has started a GoFundMe page.

Tracklisting:
1. On The Edge Of Uncertainty 5.29
2. Mojo Man 4.46
3. Summer’s Eve 5.30
4. Cinderblock 2.36
5. Softtail Deuce 4.16
6. Tienes Mi Corazón (You Have My Heart) 5.17
7. Ice Storm 3.00
8. Under The Bodhi Tree 6.37
9. The Other Side Of The Coin 3.36
10. Happy Trails (vocal Karen Hunter) 1.30

Peter Gabriel:
“Steve is a wonderful musician with great chops and a big heart. He has a very individual style – free flowing and fluid. His playing on ‘Solsbury Hill’ was a real signature for the track, and it has always been a great pleasure working with him.”

Joe Satriani:

“Steve Hunter is a great guitarist; and his influence on the American rock guitar style is huge. Over the years his tone and unique approach to solo and ensemble playing has become synonymous with classic rock guitar. Steve has a way of playing that always enhances the track, elevates the vibe and puts a smile on my face.”

Bob Ezrin:
“In my opinion Steve Hunter is the greatest lyrical guitarist in America. His tone is majestic and his sense of melody is unrivaled.”

Alice Cooper:
‘I Am Made Of You’ “This is just the best solo ever, maybe on any of my albums.”

Jason Becker:

“Steve is a huge inspiration to me, both musically and as a person. His lessons made me a better guitarist and musician. His music has so much soul, it often brings tears to my eyes. He is a true artist. Some of the most fun times in my life were spent with him. I feel so lucky to know him.”

Robby Krieger:
“I met Steve years ago when we were both on the IRS run by Miles Copeland. We both had done solo records for the label. Miles had this great idea to have a label dedicated to guitarists only and it was called No speak… (no vocals) pretty cool. So we got a tour of Europe together for the guys on the label, i think the tour was called Night of the guitar. We had Alvin Lee, Steve Howe, Randy California to name a few. But I was always intrigued by Steve Hunters playing. He wasn’t a shredder so much as real tasty. I always loved to watch him do harmonics up high on the neck. But the main thing was that he was the nicest of all those guys, easy to hang with too. After about 20 years of not seeing each other , we met at an Alice Cooper rehearsal last year and caught up. Was great to see him and we got to jam together at the whiskey with Alices band. Thank you! ”
