Legendary UFO / Waysted Bassist Pete Way Has Died – 2020 Tribute

Iconic bass player Pete Way founder of UFO, Waysted and, latterly, The Pete Way Band has died.

He sustained life threatening injuries in an accident two months ago but fought hard until finally succumbing to those injuries at 11:35am BST today. His wife, Jenny, was at his side.

Pete Way was a much loved and highly regarded figure among rock fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. Best known for his work with UFO, Pete’s energetic live performances were at the heart of the band’s countless world tours. His melodic bass lines underpinned the catalogue of enduring rock classics upon which UFO’s reputation and legacy were founded. Pete’s post UFO work included collaborating with “Fast” Eddie Clarke from Motörhead – the two putting together Fastway with Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist for his long time friend, Ozzy Osbourne. He then put together his own band Waysted. Pete’s keen ear for song arrangements have also seen him serve as producer for popular hard rock acts such as Twisted Sister and the Cockney Rejects. Pete had recently finished a solo album, “Walking On The Edge” with producer Mike Clink (Guns n Roses “Appetite For Destruction” amongst many more.) He had a biography published “A Fast Ride Out Of Here” in 2017 and an album “Amphetamine” which is currently out on Cargo Records.

Pete is survived by two daughters, Zowie and Charlotte and his younger brother, Neill.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Pete Way today. The “Strangers In The Night” live album is hands-down one of my all-time favorites, and for me the highlight of the UFO lineup of that day. Pete and his girlfriend actually came to see Megadeth on the Clash of the Titans tour at the Birmingham NEC Arena in 1990 where Dave Mustaine and I had a brief conversation with him just before we took the stage that evening. It’s always impactful to know your heroes are in the audience for your show, the same way I was for his show with Waysted opening for Iron Maiden several years before at Irvine Meadows, CA. Pete’s look, his style, and his simple but powerful bass lines were a highly influential force to my own playing. He will be dearly missed….RIP! #ufo #peteway #waysted

Pete Way Visits Gravesite of Brian Jones @ Cheltenham Cemetery – The Rolling Stones

There were spooky happenings at Cheltenham’s cemetery when Pete Way and band member, Jason Poole, went to visit the grave of former Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones.

Pete Way, who purports to be sensitive to such psychic ability was apparently talking to Brian when this selfie was taken by Poole. “I was checking the images when I saw what looked very much like a beam of light but it wasn’t in the right context. That can’t be explained. I look like I’m in another photo.”

Way explains “I often go there to pay my respects. The Stones are, to me, the greatest band ever. Brian was there in the beginning, started it and made it possible. Where would we be without Mick and Keith? I suffer from the unusual ability to pick up vibes, both good and bad, and it can sometimes be a real burden. But I felt like I was his friend despite never meeting him. That day I had a complete inner peace wash over me. I knew I was in the presence of greatness.”

Pete Way 2019 Interview

The website Antihero recently conducted an interview with legendary bassist Pete Way. An excerpt from the interview can be found below. You can read the entire interview @ this location.

ANTIHERO: We chatted several years ago. I was asking about your health. Because, I think when we last talked, it was way back in 2014, you’ve had several major health scares/concerns.

Pete Way: Yeah. No, I had prostate cancer and I’ve had three minor heart attacks. But you know. Take life as it comes. We’ve been doing shows and they’ve been going great. Going to make the next step to bigger venues. Pretty much everywhere we play sells out. We needed to get our feet on the ground. Again, my health. Never too sure of it. The older you get; you never know what’s beyond that door.

ANTIHERO: Of course. Since we last talked you’ve had a couple of your former bandmates, Eddie Clarke and Paul Raymond, that have unfortunately passed.

Pete Way: Yeah. Oddly enough, despite what I used to use, I never smoked. I don’t think Paul Raymond smoked but Paul Raymond was older than me. But Eddie is a total shame. He, back in the day, smoked. Oddly enough, though, he got slow but the complications came from the fact that his lungs weren’t good. You know. It’s something that just reminds me all the time. And yet I’ve done just about, I wouldn’t say every drug in the world, but really pushed it to the limit. Thousands and thousands of drugs. In fact, my body so I can’t… They try and take a blood test off me and they can’t because they can’t get to my veins. I had veins removed just so that my system was working again, you know. Anyway, that’s the last of my medical history. Actually, the worst I can do is a couple of glasses of white wine.

ANTIHERO: So, just touching on another band from your past. Obviously, you want to focus on what you’re doing now. I’m just wondering how you feel about bands, generally, from the 80s and that era who are continuing to go and operate to release music. Sometimes I think, specifically, in the case of Fastway without or any of the original members. Fastway. I mean, obviously, yourself and Eddie…are not involved and that band is still around.

Pete Way: Oh Fastway! I never actually played with Fastway, you see. Chrysalis Records put a court injunction on me, stopped me from signing with CBS. That’s why I had to do Waysted and how come I toured with Ozzy. Ozzy said to me, “Oh, I was doing nothing,” and I was his drinking partner. We went out. I did Bark at the Moon dates in England and after that, I started rehearsing with Wasted. Also, at the same time, I produced Twisted Sister’s first album. I like to keep busy at the right time.

ANTIHERO: Yeah. Health permitting, of course. Who would have been the most influential musician that you’ve worked with? Who have you learned the most from?

Pete Way: Musician would be Michael Schenker.

ANTIHERO: Any particular album that’s you’ve recorded that stand out for you? And stand up, even today?

Pete Way: Well, probably Strangers in the Night because it was, you know. That was a summary of many years on the road, many albums and it was very successful. And it proved how good we were live.

Pete Way Plans New Solo & Waysted Album/Tour 2019 – Joe Elliott

Pete Way is currently working with promoters to book 2019 worldwide tour dates for a joint trek which would feature a solo set from the legendary bassist, and include another set with his band, Waysted.   The former UFO bassists says the shows will tie in with two releases – his long awaited solo album as well as a new album from Waysted, their first in over a decade.

Pete Way:  “I’ve been in regular contact on a daily basis with Paul Chapman and we plan to start working on a new Waysted album imminently. Think “Save Your Prayers” 2.  Waysted will have a very special guest singer of which I haven’t actually asked him yet.  If you can guess who i’m going to ask, you and your lovely wife could win a free photo session with the legendary international rock royalty photographer Ross (rude) Halfin.  Clue… His name begins with the letter “J” & he supports Sheffield United.  He is the master of vocal melodies so “Pour some sugar on me,” “1 lump or 2.”  He’s sometimes known to close friends as “Our Jo” or “Oscar Wilde.”

“I’m tracking the final 4 vocals needed to finish my long awaited solo album in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience guys xxx

“My doctor says that I’m doing good but to please hurry up and finish off the solo album as the medical bills need paying 🙂

“Mike Clink (Gun’s N’ Roses producer) & my long term friend & associate Jason Poole are currently finalising the solo album

“In the meantime if Slash wouldn’t mind giving up his day job with Gun’s N’ Roses i’d love to get him involved.  I know Slash has a kind heart & Duff (McKagan) inspires me to stay on track!

“I will be paying tribute to some of my close friends & rock heroes that have sadly passed at my shows and we can all sing along and raise a toast to them!

“I promise I will be sober & no drugs will be in my system!

“This really matters to me as do you the fans!

“Coming to rock ya 2019

Dee Snider, “Just Finished Martin Popoff’s Book ‘Lights Out’ on UFO” – Michael Schenker, Pete Way, Phil Moog, Andy Parker

Dee Snider:  “Just finished Martin Popoff’s book Lights Out on UFO. Thanks for reminding me how important Pete Way, Phil Moog, Andy Parker & Michael Schenker were to me & so many others. Such an amazing band!”

The first book ever on the classic British rock band UFO. Based around the author’s many interviews with all the key players such as Phil Mogg, Pete Way & Michael Schenker. Noted author Martin Popoff takes you through the Schenker era in great detail; album-by-album, song by song along with touring anecdotes and of course, tales revolving around the wild and excessive behavior that was very much a part of the band.

PURCHASE

Having written the first book ever on UFO, 2005’s long out-of-print Shoot Out the Lights by Martin Popoff, author of 72 rock books, has now been greatly expanded and rewritten, bringing us Lights Out: Surviving the ‘70s with UFO.

The book features new interviews with Phil Mogg, Andy Parker, Michael Schenker and Paul Raymond (plus the likes of producer Ron Nevison and Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey Powell), along with a substantial amount of new discography info and press research, to offer what is now the only book to focus on the ‘70s era of the band.

Utilizing his celebrated one album per chapter method, Popoff analyzes the complete catalog from this golden period of the band – Flying, Live, Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out, Obsession and Strangers in the Night – bringing you the stories of hits such as “Doctor Doctor,” “Rock Bottom,” “Shoot Shoot,” “Let It Roll,” “Lights Out,” Love to Love,” “Too Hot to Handle” and “Only You Can Rock Me.”

In and around Popoff’s famed meticulous analysis of the catalog, the book also features lots of tour talk, revealing nightmares surrounding the band’s business, and warnings about how the twin demons of drugs and alcohol can slow a band’s progress on the way to the top.

Also included is a detailed 1970s band discography and a gloss photo section.

About Lights Out: Surviving the ‘70s with UFO, Popoff says: “I really shortchanged the Mick Bolton-era version of the band in the 2005 book, so look for those records to be examined in much more detail. And just in general, what you’ll find with Lights Out is a more track-by-track analysis of every album, basically a deep celebration of the classic Schenker years, along with, like I say, a nicely fleshed-out representation of the genesis of the band. Bottom line, this book is DOUBLE the word count that was applied to 1969 – 1979 material in Shoot Out the Lights.”
