Robert Plant to Phil Collins: “My dear friend who gave me so much help…” – 2024

Robert Plant:

To my dear friend who gave me so much help at the beginning of life after John Bonham. I send love and birthday wishes.

Excerpt from Robert Plant’s 2023 interview w/ Vulture:

After John Bonham passed away and there was no Led Zeppelin, there had to be a way to go. I floundered around a lot because until I was 32, I was in some kind of wild and absurd adventure. I went through all that stuff. I’ll write with other people. It’s a very intimate thing to do. It’s hard for anybody to expose themselves musically. Other people with me, and me with other people. I have a lot of songs under my belt, which I co-wrote with the members of Zeppelin. It was a lot to live up to. I had a lot of people who gave me support and strength around that time, so I suppose the first two albums were driven by great friends.

Phil Collins especially was a driving force and had positive energy with the first record, Pictures at Eleven. It wasn’t a difficult job to get together with other people, it was just whether or not we could cook it properly. With Phil, it wasn’t so much advice as encouragement and consideration. He was taking no prisoners. He would only allow himself a short amount of time to come to the studio in Wales and make it work. Nobody was hiding behind the performance. Then he came on tour with me and basically said, “Robert, the guy that sat behind you for all those years was my hero.” That was it. He said, “Anything I can do to help you to get back into fighting shape again, I’m here.” That was at the time when “In the Air Tonight” came out. Yet he was still mixing and working with me while kicking off a particularly impressive and successful timeIndeed, Collins somehow made time to play drums on the majority of Pictures at Eleven’s tracks, as well as serve as Plant’s drummer for the subsequent tour. This was after Collins became an international sensation with Face Value and Genesis’s early-’80s output. for himself. He’s a great spirit, a good man.

Ritchie Blackmore: John Bonham would always tell Zeppelin, “I’m leaving the band. I can’t go back to America again.” – 2022 – VIDEO – Deep Purple – Led Zeppelin – Rainbow

Ritchie Blackmore: John Bonham would always tell Zeppelin: “I’m leaving the band. I can’t go back to America again. I can’t do that.” So, Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin’s manager) used to go, “Hey, come to the garage, I want to show you something.” He’d go, “What?” They’d go to his garage and there’s a new Lamborghini, just what Bonzo wanted.

John Bonham:

“Wow, look at that.”

Peter Grant:

“That’s yours for coming to America.”

John Bonham:

“Well, yeah, alright.”

And that’s how he kept coming. But there were a couple of moments there where he ended up crying because he wanted to go home. He didn’t want to be in America, missed his wife, didn’t want to be in a big band. He wanted to be in a small band in Birmingham, just playing. He didn’t care about all that fame.

From John Bonham: The Powerhouse Behind Led Zeppelin:

John Bonham:

“Sometimes touring gets a bit wearing, but that’s only because I’m married with kids at home. I’ve never gotten pissed off with the actual touring. I enjoy playing – I could play every night. It’s just being away that gets you down sometimes. I still enjoy going through different towns that we haven’t been to before. But you get fed up with places like New York because they’re not interesting anymore.”

“I’ve got worse. I have terribly bad nerves all the time. Once we start into ‘Rock And Roll’ I’m fine. I just can’t stand sitting around, and I worry about playing badly – and if I do then I’m really pissed off. If I play well, I feel fine.

Everybody in the band is the same, and each has some little thing they do before we go on, like pacing about or lighting a cigarette. It’s worse at festivals. You might have to sit around for a whole day and you daren’t drink because you’ll get tired and blow the gig. So you sit drinking tea in a caravan with everybody saying, “Far out, man.””

We once did six tours of America in 15 months.

‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ Documentary to Premiere at The 78th Venice Film Festival – 2021 – La Biennale di Venezia

‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ will receive its world premiere at The 78th Venice Film Festival in September 2021. La Biennale di Venezia

Becoming Led Zeppelin, directed by Bernard MacMahon (American Epic), and co-written and produced by Allison McGourty, with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and Robert Plant as themselves, will feature in the out-of-competition section at the 78th Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia, directed by Alberto Barbera (September 1—11, 2021).

Becoming Led Zeppelin is a documentary that reveals the individual journeys of the four members of the band, as they move through the music scene of the 1960s, playing small clubs throughout Britain and performing some of the biggest hits of the era, until their meeting in the summer of 1968 for a rehearsal that changes their lives forever. Their four journeys merge into one as they set out to conquer America on a rollercoaster ride that culminates in 1970 when they become the number one band in the world. Before the stairway and the dragon, before the gold and the girls, there were simply four men and their love of music.

Bernard MacMahon says: “With Becoming Led Zeppelin my goal was to make a documentary that looks and feels like a musical. I wanted to weave together the four diverse stories of the band members before and after they formed their group with large sections of their story advanced using only music and imagery and to contextualize the music with the locations where it was created and the world events that inspired it. I used only original prints and negatives, with over 70,000 frames of footage manually restored, and devised fantasia sequences, inspired by Singin’ In The Rain, layering unseen performance footage with montages of posters, tickets, and travel to create a visual sense of the freneticism of their early career.”

Luca Stricagnoli Covers Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” – VIDEO

Luca Stricagnoli: “Stairway To Heaven” is one of the most legendary songs to ever be created. I know it´s also one of the most overplayed songs, but I love so much that I wanted to do my own interpretation of it.

I am using two of my inventions: the first is the add-on neck you see since the beginning. The name of it is “Reversed Slide Neck”, and as the name suggests it´s a neck that has an opposite direction compared to regular necks and features a slide, mounted on binaries. The RSN has another interesting particularity: it is an add-on neck, which can be attached and removed from your guitar in just a few seconds. It was invented by me and turned into reality by Davide Serracini.

The second invention I use in the video is the Soprano Guitar, a guitar played horizontally and equipped with high-pitched strings tuned in scale that I used many other times in my videos. In this arrangement, I use it only to play the solo.

I hope you enjoy my version of Stairway to Heaven!

Paul Rodgers on John Bonham Redditch Memorial, “What better than to reveal John’s statue in the middle of the dark night. How perfectly Zeppelin.”

Paul Rodgers: “John (Bonham) in action forever. What better than to reveal John’s statue in the middle of the dark night. To appear magically at the dawn of his 70th b’day, creating a unique air of mystery. How perfectly Zeppelin.”

Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham finally received his permanent memorial in Redditch town centre (Worcestershire, England), the birthplace of the legendary drummer.  The statue was unveiled on what would have been his 70th birthday.  You can watch an interview with Bonham’s sister, where she talks about the memorial, via our previous post at this location.

The sculpture was inspired by Zeppelin’s album Houses Of The Holy, but, according to sculptor Mark Richards, “there are other references to Led Zeppelin graphics woven into the composition.”

Mark Richards: “Delighted that my memorial sculpture to John Bonham was installed over night in Redditch town centre. Thanks to all who helped make this happen.”

John Bonham Memorial in Redditch Town Centre

John Bonham will finally receive a permanent memorial in Redditch town centre (Worcestershire, England), the birthplace of the legendary drummer from Led Zeppelin. Bonham’s sister Deborah, who has been campaigning for years, finally received permission and is moving forward.

The preferred location for the memorial is on the Church Green, behind St Stephen’s church, next to the Bandstand and Bartleet Fountain, on land owned by Redditch Borough Council.
