Sepultura Released “Arise” on This Day in 1992
On this day in 1992, Brazilian metal pioneers Sepultura released “Arise”, the band’s first official single and one of the defining tracks of their early catalog.
Formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, Sepultura helped put Brazilian metal on the global map with a ferocious sound that fused thrash, death metal, and raw intensity.
Reflecting on the track, Max Cavalera told Revolver that “Arise” remains the Sepultura song he is proudest of writing, singling out its unforgettable main riff and the energy that made it stand apart.
“That’s my favorite,” Max said. “That’s my favorite track, especially the main riff. I remember writing that and going, ‘Oh, yeah, this is sick,’ because it’s like… And I think it’s a big influence by Metallica’s ‘Blackened,’ if I’m not mistaken. It’s same kind of idea, but we made it thrashier and just more energetic. But I think it’s cool.”
He went on to describe the song as a blueprint for an entire style of extreme metal.
“That, to me, is like the prototype of a death-thrash song. It’s perfect. There’s nothing you can add to make it better. And if you take anything out of it, it ruins it. It’s like it’s perfect the way it is. So, I’m very proud of that one.”
