35 Years of SKID ROW’s “Monkey Business”

“Monkey Business” is the lead single from the 2nd official full-length studio album “Slave To The Grind” by SKID ROW, released on June 22nd, 1991 and celebrating its 35th year release date anniversary. Written by bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo, the track became the album’s biggest single, showcasing the band’s shift into a heavier, more aggressive sound while still delivering massive hooks.

Although it never cracked the US Billboard Hot 100, “Monkey Business” tore up rock radio, climbing to number 13 on the US Album Rock Tracks chart and hitting number 19 on the UK Singles Chart, where it spent several weeks as a fan favorite.

According to Rachel Bolan, the band’s release strategy for the song took an unexpected turn: once radio stations got hold of “Monkey Business”, it took off so quickly that even attempts to shift focus to another single couldn’t slow it down, and programmers kept spinning it because of demand. Bolan has also talked about how the song almost didn’t have a proper chorus until a last-minute change locked it into place, helping transform it into the heavy, hook‑laden anthem we know today.

For his part, Sebastian Bach has spoken about how personally invested he was in the song, saying he worked closely with Snake on the main riff and taking pride in the way “Monkey Business” helped define the tougher, more uncompromising sound of the “Slave To The Grind” era.
