Scorpions Released World Wide Live on This Day in 1985

Released on June 20, 1985, Scorpions’ World Wide Live captured the band at the height of their arena-conquering ’80s run, distilling the power of the Love at First Sting tour into one of the decade’s most celebrated live albums.

Produced by longtime collaborator Dieter Dierks, the album was compiled from shows recorded in the United States and Europe, including stops in Paris, Los Angeles, San Diego, Costa Mesa, and Cologne. It showcases the classic lineup of Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker, Matthias Jabs, Francis Buchholz, and Herman Rarebell firing on all cylinders in front of packed arenas.

Originally issued as a 19-track double LP and cassette, World Wide Live pulls heavily from the band’s late-’70s and early-’80s catalog, with live versions of key cuts from Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, and Love at First Sting. A companion VHS release gave fans a visual document of the same era, putting viewers right on the barricade for one of hard rock’s most finely tuned live acts.

The album went on to become a landmark live release, reaching No. 17 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earning platinum certification in the U.S. For many fans, World Wide Live remains the definitive snapshot of Scorpions at full ’80s power, caught in the moment as they transitioned from European cult favorites to global headliners.
