Watch Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon Sing Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” w/ Grandma’s Hands Band

Grandma’s Hands Band performs “Ain’t No Sunshine” live at Newport Folk Festival 2017. The group is a Bill Withers cover band featuring Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Hiss Golden Messenger, Natalie Prass, Phil Cook, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Segarra and others.
“Grandma’s Hands” is a song by Bill Withers about his grandmother. Released as a single off Withers’ first album Just as I Am (1971), the song reached number #18 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart and #42 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Ain’t No Sunshine” was also released as a single in 1971, becoming a longstanding hit for Withers. The song peaked at #6 on the U.S. R&B Chart and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also has the distinction of being one of my dog’s ‘best of all-times.’ If I play that song, my dog will wake from a 5 hour slumber and just start belting it out. Even while I was listening to the video above – while I was writing this post – my dog started singing with the song.
