Steeler Self-Titled Album on Red Vinyl/LP – Record Store Day 2023 – RSD – Yngwie Malmsteen, Ron Keel, Rik Fox, Mark Edwards – Remastered

STEELER
SELF-TITLED

Event: BLACK FRIDAY 2023
Release Date: 11/24/2023
Format: LP
Label: Sound City
Release type: ‘RSD First’ Release

Although many metalheads probably assume that Swedish guitar shredder Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s first U.S.-based band was Alcatrazz, he was a brief member of another obscure Los Angeles-based metal band called Steeler. The group also featured future Keel frontman Ron Keel (bassist Rik Fox and drummer Mark Edwards also rounded out the band), and the quartet’s music was similar to the pop/party metal that was ruling the Sunset Strip at the time. The band was one of the first to be signed to Mike Varney’s Shrapnel label (one that has since become synonymous with highly technical guitar shredders), resulting in a lone self-titled release from 1983 before their breakup shortly thereafter. Although the album failed to make much noise upon release, it became a cult classic for fans after Malmsteen and Keel.

This RSD Black Friday release is pressed on clear red vinyl.

Tracklisting:
Cold Day In Hell
Backseat Driver
No Way Out
Hot On Your Heels
Abduction
On The Rox
Down To The Wire
Born To Rock
Serenade

Ron Keel:

40 years went by in the blink of an eye. Find the joy and celebrate each moment as if it were the last bottle on Earth.

Joe Lynn Turner on Taking Off His Wig & Working with Yngwie Malmsteen During the Odyssey Album: “He was like a trainwreck” – 2022

Metal Edge: Joe Lynn Turner talked to us about his heavy new album, (not) wearing a wig and his wild odyssey with Yngwie Malmsteen. You can read the entire interview @ this location.

An excerpt from the interview can be found below.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT:

During the course of your career, did the fact that you wear a wig ever become an issue with any artist or band you worked with?

Joe Lynn Turner:

It was an open secret. I wasn’t trying to hide it by wearing a wig, they didn’t care if it was a wig or not as long as it looked good, which I thought it did and which is why I wanted it. But I just decided it was time. It’s like a wine, no wine is good before its time. I’m older now and I can deal with that, but you still have to be courageous to do something like this. Plus, it’s a time for truth, for people to accept themselves, to motivate and inspire people no matter what the challenge is.

Graham Bonnet is an absolute hero because he was spot on, he came right out, he scolded the business side of it and all of their false pretensions because he was a subject of all of that too with Blackmore where his hair was too short, etc. Because we all had to wear a uniform. And today they’re still wearing uniforms, with the chains, the gear and the get ups, and the hair.

Earlier we were discussing the esoteric subject matter on your new album. I first came across your interest in these kind of topics after hearing your work with Yngwie Malmsteen on his Odyssey album, with songs such as “Déjà Vu” and ‘Crystal Ball.” How did you come to be part of that project?

Jim Lewis from Polygram had phoned me up and said, “Look, we want you to do with Yngwie what you did with Rainbow.” Which was to make Yngwie commercial but still keep the hard edge. And Jim knew I had the songwriting abilities and all. So I went out to California and met Yngwie, and he was like a trainwreck. I figured out psychologically I needed a whip and a chair like a lion tamer to find a way in so that he would welcome me. I guess because we partied heavy for three days and talked a lot, that sort of convinced him I was worthy.

Soon after that, I went back to New York to get some clothes and pack some stuff, and when I returned, Yngwie was in the hospital from a car accident. So instead of abandoning ship or anything I stayed in L.A. because with the Johansson brothers [keyboardist Jens Johansson and drummer Anders Johannson] I was the “elder” in the band. At one point we were going to have Bob Daisley and Eric Singer in the band, but Yngwie was rebelling against that because he wanted his Swedish guys in the band who were amazing players, yet there was a lot going on.

I was the one taking care of him in the hospital. I was getting wire transfers of $80,000 from Polygram to keep him in ICU to save his life, otherwise they were going to send him down to the county hospital. On top of that, he had a manager who spoke in the third person, had a Rolls-Royce and carried around cocaine and a .44 Magnum.

So I stayed there and took Yngwie’s tracks, and I just wrote to them and Odyssey became a very successful album. It had accomplished what we needed; it was commercial but at the same time it retained his identity, and I think he plays brilliantly on it, regardless of what people may say. But then he started to butt heads with me and there was no way I could stay in the band anymore, so I moved on.

KISS’s Gene Simmons Talks Eddie Van Halen: “Nobody walks down the street humming Yngwie (Malmsteen) solos” – 2022 – Interview – The 1978 Demos – House of Pain – David Lee Roth, Michael Anthony

Dean Delray: It’s Gene Simmons of KISS on Let There Be Talk. 2 hours of Rock and Comedy Talk. You can listen to the entire interview @ this location. An excerpt from the interview can be found below.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT (transcribed by full in bloom):

When you approached Van Halen back in the day, how did they know it was really you if no one had ever seen you without your makeup? Did people around town go, “Oh, those are the KISS guys?”

Yeah. My date for that night was a girl named Bebe Buell, who would then move on to have a child with Steven Tyler, Liv Tyler. But she had been friendly with other people as well. I was busy up at a place called the Starwood.

There was a guy named Rodney Bingenheimer who was called Prince of Sunset Boulevard (Mayor of the Sunset Strip), or something like that. He’s a fascinating guy. He championed English music, The Sweet. If it wasn’t for him, you wouldn’t have heard all the early stuff.

Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley w/ Rodney Bingenheimer

David Bowie.

Bowie became more acceptable in America. The Sweet, even though they had hit records, “Little Willy,” which I was never fond of, but you can’t criticize “Ballroom Blitz.” You can’t. Without that, you wouldn’t have “Kickstart My Heart” (Motley Crue Song). The Sweet were so underrated.

Anyway, any English band that came to L.A., Rodney would be the host. He called and said, “Hey, do you want to go see some bands? There’s a group called The Boyz with a good guitar player named George Lynch.” I said, “Sure.” There were three bands on the bill, and I think they were second on the bill. “Sure, I’ll go.”

I was there upstairs because they put all the VIP assholes upstairs, so everyone can look and point. I was busy with, “Can I have your autograph?”

But people knew it was you?

Yeah. So, they came up and I was trying to be nice. Then all of a sudden, I heard like (makes guitar soloing sound), but symphonic and melodic, not just noise. Where you could hear the melody and be able to hum it back, instead of Yngwie (Malmsteen) nonsense. You know, good luck to him, too, good luck to anybody. But nobody walks down the street humming Yngwie solos versus Van Halen solos. The great solos, you can hum. He (Eddie Van Halen) spent time figuring the musicality of it.

I just pushed everyone to the side, and I went to the front. There was hardly anyone on stage. There was a shirtless guy (David Lee Roth), who looked like Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas, doing crazy stuff. You had a bass player (Michael Anthony) pounding away, playing really good stuff. I can play a little bit. This guy was doing good stuff, great runs. But he’s got to fill up the musicality because the guitar player is not playing chords, he’s typing away on the neck. I had never heard or seen anything like that. By the third song, I’m waiting backstage. And I’ve told this story many times before. They came back:

“Hey, Gene, how are you?”

“Guys, I want to offer my services. I don’t know what you’re doing.”

“Well, that guy over there, we’re about to sign with him.”

“Oh, well, I wish you luck. What does he do?”

“He’s a yogurt manufacturer.”

“He’s a yogurt manufacturer? Why are you going to sign with him?”

“Well, he’s going to invest in us.”

“No, you don’t understand how it works. If you make a hundred bucks, you might see ten dollars, may be as your profit margin – that’s pre-tax. If you’re really good, you’ll be able to see twenty dollars. Then after tax, you’ll make ten dollars, and then you’ve got to split it among the four guys. Not to mention the manager, who’s going to take ten, fifteen, twenty percent.

Are you out of your mind? You’re going to give this guy…just because he had money. You don’t understand how the business works. Sign to me. I’m not going to torture you and everything. I’ll fly you to New York. I’ll produce you at Electric Lady Studios.”

That’s what I did. I brought David some higher heeled boots and everything. I gave Edward, when he was alive, the master tapes. I said, “I don’t want it to come out,” but, of course, it’s out there and it sounds great. Some of those arrangements are yours truly. But those guys were self-contained, played live in the studio. There’s some stuff on there, one called “House of Pain,” that kills.

That came out on the ’84 record.

Not my “House of Pain.” You’ve never heard a Van Halen song like this. Unrelenting. You should hear, on better speakers, what Michael is playing on bass. Killer, so underrated. There’s nobody who sounded like Michael on background (vocals). His voice cuts through everything.

You can listen to the entire interview @ this location.

Jeff Scott Soto After Attending 2022 Yngwie Show: “I was kindly told as long as I am present, the show would be cancelled,” Malmsteen Responds: “Stop stalking me and get help!”

Jeff Scott Soto:

Hey my peeps, here’s a fun little diddy for ya! I went to the Canyon Club tonight, my local watering hole for the past 21 years, it’s like my Cheers where everybody knows my name…I actually went to see one of the support bands who were killer btw, I hesitated on going because my former ahem ‘boss’ was headlining but I was not planning to stay anyway…well, word got to him I was in the house and I was kindly told as long as I am present, the show would be cancelled… Now I’ve seen it all!

I left as planned but it’s kind of funny, I just had to share the ludicrousness (not a real word but seems to fit the detail) that continues in 2022, I laughed all the way home! I’m sure this will be shared like crazy but I couldn’t help but sharing it with you all, good times!

Yngwie Malmsteen:

Kids, don’t believe made up BS from people who are trying to stay relevant! ✌🏻 He’s not important for me to cancel my show to my fans. On the other hand I was told by my agent that he snuck in there without paying so the security threw him out ✌🏻😆

One last thing on the subject because I refuse to give any more energy to it. After almost 40 years – wrap your head around that number – 40 years this guy has slandered smeared made up stories to get media attention. Stop stalking me and get help!

Jeff Scott Soto:

I will put this to rest after clarifying a few things, God forbid ANYONE thinks I am trying to drum up press, especially by berating someone in the process.

I post my past on social media to celebrate and share the pride I have for my musical endeavors the past 4 decades. I don’t and don’t need to ride anyone’s coattails, stalk or trying to drum up press for myself, I have my music and the current things I partake in to do this. Everything else I share is a celebration, nothing more, nothing less.

I went out to a venue I frequent for the past 21 years, I have played this venue more times than I can remember or count and know all that have been and still there since I walked through those doors the 1st time in 2001. I have not ‘snuck in’ to a show since 1988 when I heard of an intimate jam Prince was throwing at an undisclosed location which I found out about and finally made it in 15 min before he was done playing. That said, if I have to sneak in to a venue or not pay to get into one for ANYONE, I simply would not even be near the building, I am 56, not 16!

Lastly, I went to this venue to see someone play who is very near and dear to me. When I found out who the headliner was, I decided it best not to go as I didn’t wanna ruffle any feathers in any way. Then I decided I will go but leave before said headliner begins as I had no interest in seeing that part of the evening anyway.

If anyone has been paying attention to interviews, award speeches and even my own social media where I have stated numerous times all I want in my life is peace, no enemies, no animosity ESPECIALLY with ANYONE in my past, they will know my intent is ONLY about leaving this planet with no water under the bridge. I extend olive branches, continue to celebrate my past with a positive spin and make sure everyone knows I wanna hug it out with anyone who has or has had any issue with me. If this is ‘sick’ then institutionalize me immediately!

Yngwie Malmsteen’s Song Blindfold Test w/ Guitar World – Pantera, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Metallica, Dream Theater, Pearl Jam

Today, Guitar World reposted one of their old school articles where Yngwie Malmsteen critiqued fourteen tracks from his peers. Originally published in their August 1994 issue, the feature involved Malmsteen listening to a selection of unidentified tracks by unnamed guitarists. It’s an absolute gem! The entire article can be found @ this location.

On “The Mighty Turtle Head” by Joe Satriani:

I like the groovy, Hendrix-style intro. Sounds like a Strat. But the soloing going over the song is very bad. It’s bent out of shape and out of tune. It’s very basic bullshit pentatonic runs.

“The choice of notes in the solo is completely overdone. That stuff has been done for 30 years! I’m sick and tired of that bending bullshit. This is the most run-of-the-mill pentatonic playing I ever heard.”

On “Master of Puppets” by Metallica:

Overall, the band has a great sound. But I think the lead guitar player [Kirk Hammett] is not very good. He can play fast, and is pretty good at it. But his choice of notes and sense of pitch are very bad. I don’t think that he plays with musicality, or plays in tune. Rather than lifting the song, his solo seems to be an anticlimax.”

On “My Name is Mud” by Primus:

On this song, the guitarist plays the weirdest combination of notes. It sounds insane! But it’s like he’s playing that way just for the sake of doing it differently. I think that Zappa intentionally made his music weird, but did it with intelligence. Primus is not unintelligent, but I think their music is done, not to piss people off, but to make the listener think, ‘What the fuck is this?’

On “I’m Broken” by Pantera:

As far as the singing goes, I couldn’t find enough words to describe my disgust. It’s really not singing. It sounds like somebody is either shoving something up the vocalist’s ass, or something is coming out of his ass and mouth at the same time. It’s a stupid excuse for being someone who stands in front of a mic stand.

On “Under a Glass Moon” by Dream Theater:

I have this on CD – it’s brilliant. Dream Theater is, by far, one of the best bands to come out recently. Musically, I think they’re really clever, and the guitarist and keyboardist are very good. A great band with the right attitude. They’re musical, technical, interesting and tasteful.

On “Go” by Pearl Jam:

I’m going to dig my own grave right now. I think the singer in Pearl Jam should eat some Pearl Jam! He cannot sing to save his life! And the guitar player needs to seek help. The guitar solo is terrible – it’s just wah pedal bullshit!”

On “Touching Tongues” by Steve Vai:

The guitar playing is really nice. Sounds like a humbucker pickup. I’ve never heard this track before, but I know it’s Steve Vai. Steve’s got his own sound and style. I spotted it right away, and that’s what I admire about him. This is some of the best stuff I’ve ever heard from him. I like what he’s doing in the middle of the song, it sounds like he’s using an octave-divider. Very interesting.
