Stephen Pearcy on the Gladiators: “RATT was forced to play under that moniker” – 2022 – Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Robbin Crosby, Vince Neil

Stephen Pearcy:

“Backstage Blast”, circa 1984 Robbin “King” Crosby with ⁦Nikki Sixx⁩ explains to a rock rag the “Gladiators,” the party street gang we created with ⁦Motley Crue⁩ in the early days hanging on the strip 1981-82. True, RATT was forced to play under that moniker. Where?

Robbin Crosby:

We had a street gang called the Gladiators. Nikki Sixx was the leader, Stephen Pearcy was Ratt Patrol Leader, Vince Neil was Field Marshall, Tommy Lee was Duke, and I was King! Sunset Boulevard was happening, and we were the sleaziest drunk guys you could meet. It was all for fun, you know? Ratt even played two shows under the name the Gladiators because the club wouldn’t book us under our own name.

Stephen Pearcy:

Answer; The Troubadour- West Hollywood, CA – The Troubadour and I had a trippy relationship with Doug when I was booking the band there. He hated the name RATT, I was Mickey Ratt there. But we sold tickets. 🐀

Stephen Pearcy: Following Ed Van Halen’s advice, I moved Mickey Ratt to L.A. Jan 1, 1980

Stephen Pearcy:

“Backstage Blast,” RATT circa 1980 Mickey Ratt releases a 45 single “Doctor Rock” and “Drivin’ on E” with John Turner Drums, Chris Hager Lead Guitars, and (RIP) brother Tim Garcia, (far left) on Bass Guitar. I sang lead vocals, rhythm guitar. Already calling the band Ratt, only a couple hundred singles made to use for promotion and to get gigs.

Following Ed Van Halen’s advice, I moved Mickey Ratt to L.A. Jan 1, 1980, from San Diego. Before the OG members Ratt EP in 1983, Mickey Ratt would play anywhere, everywhere in Hollywood as did RATT. Great advice from brother Eddie Van Halen, we eventually became the house band at Gazzarri’s, then at the Whisky A Go-Go with new OG members in 1983. Again, following the VH attack on Hollywood. Next!

Mickey Rat was a 70’s underground xxx comic book out of San Francisco circa 1972. (The misadventures of the misanthropic rodent, created by writer Chester Crill and artist Robert Armstrong as a spoof of you-know-who. This Mickey is a violent reprobate and general lowlife) I liked the name but added another “T”.

I was slowly going to just call the band RATT. circa 1980, so I designed the logo to be like the KISS logo, simple, clean identifiable. After a few attempts created the logo as we all see it.

Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider: “Cinderella’s Fred Coury was a child prodigy, classical violinist at 7 years old” – Wait…What?

Dee Snider:

Cinderella’s Fred Coury was a child prodigy, classical violinist at 7 years old. Accepted into the Berkeley School of Music…but decided to rock on the drums (amongst the myriad of instruments he plays) instead!

Wikipedia:

At age 5, Fred Coury started taking violin lessons. At age 6 he participated in his first public performance. Between the ages of 7 and 9, he studied at the Beirut Conservatory of Music in Beirut, Lebanon. At age 10, he added the trumpet to his repertoire. Finally, at age 12 he started to play the drums. By the age of 13, he was playing local bars with the band Sunjammer. As a teen, Coury was accepted to Berklee School of Music in Boston for violin.

Coury has played in other bands including London and Chastain and was playing with Ozzy Osbourne in 1985 filling-in for Randy Castillo who had a leg injury, before he joined Cinderella. He got into Cinderella when drummer Eric Singer (KISS, Badlands, Alice Cooper) told him about the gig and encouraged him to audition. Coury sent in a cassette and because, as far as everyone knew, according to Circus magazine, he was the drummer for Ozzy, that may have helped him score an audition.

Coury left Cinderella in 1991 and joined Stephen Pearcy of Ratt to form the band Arcade. He also briefly substituted for Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler in December 1987 when health issues forced Adler off the road. Coury also filled in for Rikki Rockett during Poison’s slot at the Comstock Rock Festival on July 15, 2009, due to the fact that Rockett having had baby the day before, and in 2017 he filled for Night Ranger when his friend Kelly Keagy took a brief leave from tour.

Fred Coury spends most of his time in his Los Angeles recording studio Double Forte Music composing for television and sports. A multi-award-winning composer, he has scored all four seasons of NBC’s hit series ‘The Night Shift’ (TV series), WGN America’s original series Almost Paradise and also scored the opening then for the NBC series ‘The Wall’. He composed and created the original musical score for the 2019 feature film FULL COUNT. An avid hockey fan, Coury combined his love of the sport with his musical skills to create the Goal Song and sonic identity for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team. In 2017, The L.A. Kings series ‘Black & White’, which Coury scores, was nominated and won an Emmy Award. He also provides the sonic identity for the Portland Trail Blazers NBA team, with whom he won a second Emmy award.

Rob Zombie:

Who is the voice of the raven in the Munsters clock? Well, it’s my pal Fred Coury. Yep, bet you didn’t know the drummer from Cinderella is a master impressionist. 🦇🦇🦇🦇 #robzombie #themunsters

Stephen Pearcy to Robbin Crosby When RATT First Played Madison Square Garden: “I think we’ve made it” – Interview

Metal Edge: It’s Stephen Pearcy’s birthday! Check out our interview with the singer where he tells us about busting out of Catholic school, meeting Van Halen and Ratt ‘n’ rollin’ through L.A. – You can read the entire feature @ this location.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT:

First Time I Felt I Had “Made It”

Stephen Pearcy:

There’s two times. The first is when we finished recording the Ratt EP. Robbin [Crosby] and I were out in Hollywood, tripping around, trying to get the word out. And there were two big stations in L.A. – KLOS was one and KMET was the other. And lo and behold, Robbin and I are coming back from town at, like, 2:30, 3:00 in the morning, and we hear “You Think You’re Tough” on KMET, probably on the Local Licks show or something. And then we heard it on KLOS like five minutes after. We were just screaming in the car: “They’re playing our song! We’re on the radio! We’re gonna be huge!”

Because you have to understand, even though we were a huge draw locally in L.A., Ratt were one of the last bands to get signed. That’s why we recorded the EP. We would be selling out places, with people lined up around the block, but nobody gave us the time of day. It was crazy. So that was a “holy shit” moment.

And then the other time that I thought we made it, I was with Robbin again, and we were in a limo driving into Madison Square Garden. To go park there you have to go through these round tunnels that are like a corkscrew, and they just go up and up and up. It’s like Led Zeppelin in The Song Remains the Same. I remember sitting next to him and actually saying, “I think we’ve made it.” Although by that time we had actually already made it, so maybe it doesn’t count…

First Song I Wrote

Actually this is an interesting question, because I kind of wrote a bunch of songs all in a batch, real quick. And a few of those, like “U Got It” and “Sweet Cheater,” ended up on the Ratt EP [in 1983]. And then there were also weird songs like “Valley of the Euphrates” and “Direct Motion.” I wrote them for Mickey Ratt, which then morphed into Ratt. But it was a big batch. I just wrote like crazy. And to this day I still get into these spurts where I’ll sit and just write song after song. I still like to write every day.

Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx After Rehearsing w/ Tommy Lee, Stephen Pearcy, & Robbin Crosby, “Nah, I’m gonna do my own thing” – 2022 – Interview

Blabbermouth: STEPHEN PEARCY Says He And ROBBIN CROSBY Came Close To Forming Band With NIKKI SIXX And TOMMY LEE. You can read the entire article @ this location.

Stephen Pearcy:

“So Robbin and I used to go out all the time into Hollywood — you know, ‘The [Sunset] Strip, yeah. You’ve gotta be seen. You’ve gotta be out there.’ Well, MÖTLEY was doing the same thing. Nikki, Tommy, Vince [Neil, CRÜE singer] — they’d be doing the same thing. You know, tripping down the Strip, going to the Rainbow, going here, getting fucked up… So anyway, we meet them on the Strip, hanging out. We became friends and we became The Gladiators, which was our street thing there, when we went out together. And we each had names, which goes back to [Robbin’s nickname] ‘King’. I don’t know if it was Nikki who gave him that nickname or Robbin gave it to himself.

“So in ’82, we really became close friends,” Stephen said. “I don’t think Nikki was ever really satisfied. Musicians were coming and going in bands, as the whole implosion was getting going — [in] ’81, ’82 in L.A. and that whole Strip thing. He wasn’t happy with his band at that moment.

“So, yes, it’s a true story. Robbin, Nikki, Tommy and myself, and me on guitar, were rehearsing at [pre-RATT band] MICKEY RATT’s rehearsal in Culver City there. And I believe we rehearsed for a couple of times. I don’t know if we wanted to start a band or if we were just jamming, but something was getting intense in there. And Nikki is, like, ‘Nah. I’m gonna go do my thing.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m here. Me and Robbin are doing our thing.’ And so be it.

David Chastain on ‘Mystery of Illusion’ Album: “We received a demo tape from a then unknown teenager named Fred Coury” – 2022 – Reissued on CD/VINYL/LP

David T. Chastain: When I was putting together CHASTAIN with Mike Varney, along with Leather Leone and Mike Skimmerhorn, the final piece of the puzzle was the drummer. We received a demo tape from a then unknown teenager named Fred Coury and was floored with his chops and energy. He was immediately asked to join the band and play on “Mystery of Illusion” that has just been reissued on Cd and Vinyl on Jolly Roger Records. We then all met out in the San Francisco area for rehearsals and the recording of the album. Fred added a lot of “younger” influences to the sound of the band. I recently found this in my never-ending quest to reduce the archives. Both Fred and I had completely forgotten about it. Obviously, Fred went on to do great things in the music world and still continues to create new music. I have been lucky in having amazing drummers on all of the Chastain albums: Fred, Ken Mary, John Luke Hebert, Dennis Lesh, Larry Howe & Stian Kristoffersen.
