Vicky Cornell’s Journey with Grief, 5 Years After Soundgarden Frontman Chris Cornell’s Death: “Chris’s clothing and everything is exactly the way he left it in his closet” – 2022

SiriusXM: Chris Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell, recently called in to SiriusXM’s Gayle King in the House to share how she’s been dealing with grief in the aftermath of her husband’s suicide. An excerpt from the interview has been transcribed below.

I think speaking about them, not how they died, but how they lived, I believe that’s a really big part; to celebrate their life.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT (Transcribed by full in bloom)

Vicky Cornell:

People say there are no rules when it comes to grief. But in fact, there are rules. I’m told, five years later, “Well, it’s five years. Are you talking to someone? Are you doing something?” You know, time does a few things. Sure, it can help, like it’s not that horrible everyday feeling that you had the first few days, weeks, or months. But there’s a different pain that comes with it and that’s permanency, understanding that this is forever; this isn’t going to change.

I think that’s something society, as a culture, we don’t really embrace or understand. We kind of want that to be done. After five years, I think most people are like, “Well, by now, you should be over it.” I even have friends that can’t believe that Chris’s clothing and everything is exactly the way he left it in his closet. That’s another thing where they feel like there are things you have to do in order to move on. So, I just want to say to people who are grieving and feel that sort of loss that there are really no rules. And time isn’t a healer and you’re not alone in that, and you do whatever it takes to find your reason.

I think the most important thing is, allow us to talk about our loved ones. Allow us to talk about them every day. And for me and my children, the most important thing is to keep Chris alive in our home. He is spoken about every single day. I love when people talk to me about Chris.

Did she ever suspect that Chris might take his own life:

No. This was a tsunami. This was not on the radar. This was not like, “Oh, we have to deal with this.” Chris did not suffer from suicidal ideation, and he was not even depressed. Chris was in recovery; he had been on benzos (Benzodiazepines). Looking back, even at that very moment, it felt impossible. It came from nowhere. It’s a very traumatic kind of loss, and I think for people who deal with that kind of traumatic loss, it’s a different sort of healing. And time again, which goes through waves because I can tell you it’s five years, and it doesn’t feel like it’s five years. It feels like it’s about a year, six months.

I think everybody processes things differently. With our situation, it was very public, so you don’t know which way to go first. I didn’t know what to do to protect my children from that, who were young. I think it’s important to allow people the space to understand that this is what is happening and allowing them to cope with that. I think speaking about them, not how they died, but how they lived, I believe that’s a really big part; to celebrate their life.

I also think it’s important, especially when we’re talking about suicide, to get to the cause because I think people sort of brush that off. That sort of thing, like, “Oh, my God, that person took their life.” There’s a stigma attached to it. But I think that also comes from the fact that we are not looking at the cause. Is it depression? Is it schizophrenia? Is it that they took too many drugs? What was the cause? I feel like that changes everything.

The cause of Chris’s suicide:

I do know the cause because I was on the phone with Chris, and he was in some sort of delirium, the same night. He had left that morning from our home, and he had flown to Detroit to play a show. He called me after the show, and I could just hear that he wasn’t right. He sounded like he was high. He was confused. His speech was slurred, and there was just something extremely off. Thirty minutes later, that was it.

What they’ve done to try to heal:

Obviously, therapy, talking. One of the first things I did was get a hold of, “Ok, the who, how, when, and how do I bring someone in to talk about these subject matters?” We had professionals that came in and spoke to my children and explained how addiction works and try to help them understand the subject matter. That it’s not just someone gets up and takes their life, and how that wasn’t really their daddy.

He was such a present father, and they had such a connection. They traveled the world with him. Thankfully, they had that experience with him, to be able to be with him like that. They knew that something very wrong happened. Their daddy was not a selfish person. He was the best. I think they’ve taken that, and they have such a strong foundation of love, family, and a support system.

Chris Cornell’s Daughter, Toni, Remembers Performing “Hallelujah”: I’m going to share a bit of the back story – 2022

Toni Cornell:

I know that I have posted this performance before, but it feels kind of surreal that it’s been 5 years since it happened. Almost as surreal as that day itself.

I was 12 years old, and I remember being so nervous. But I knew I had to do it, no matter what it took, I had to sing for my dad and Chester Bennington. And I’m so grateful to Ryan Tedder who asked me to join him and One Republic who really helped lift me up.

I’m going to share a bit of the back story. Losing my dad was the hardest thing in the world. It didn’t feel real or that it could possibly be happening. It felt like one of those bad dreams you just can’t wake up from.

During those few months, Chester asked me if I would sing with him and Linkin Park in London at the 02 arena. We were going to sing Sharp Edges. It was soon after Ariana Grande’s Manchester concert, where a bomb went off in the arena, and it just made me feel so scared to go and perform. Chester understood and he picked another city where I could perform with him. He believed in me; he had listened to my songs, and he wanted to push me to share with all of you a pain he knew too well. I was too afraid and too shy – but sharing is how we heal. Chester never made it to that next city….

I was crushed to lose yet another person who I loved. And I learned that tomorrow is never a guarantee, so when Ryan asked me to sing with him – in tribute to both Chester and my dad – I called my mom, who was in LA at Chester’s funeral, and I said, I’m doing this.

This song which Leonard Cohen wrote all those years ago holds so much meaning to me, for so many reasons. My personal connection to my dad. His own connection to the song, and through it to his friend Jeff Buckley. And most of all, Chester’s beautiful tribute when he sang it at my dad’s funeral service. Music connects us, touches and heals in ways we sometimes don’t even realize at first. A song can live with you and become part of your story forever.

Live every day to the fullest. No one knows what tomorrow brings.

Chris Cornell Statue Vandalized @ Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle

Vicky Cornell: My children and I are heartbroken to learn of the vandalization of Chris’s statue at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. The statue is not only a work of art but a tribute to Chris, his incomparable musical legacy and everything that he stood for. It represents Chris, who is beloved not only in Seattle, but worldwide. In the face of this hate and destruction, we are thankful once again to the fans who stood up to support him and showed such immense love. It lifted our hearts to hear that fans brought supplies and attempted to clean up the heartbreaking vandalism. The statue will be restored. Hate will not win. Chris is Seattle’s Son!

Chris Cornell: Listen to Previously Unreleased Cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience” 2020

Chris Cornell (Official): “His birthday seemed the perfect time to share this and celebrate Chris, his voice, music, stories and art. It is true a man is not dead while his name is still spoken…and, through his art, an artist’s soul still burns just as bright as ever upon all those that look up to him and his memory. Releasing music that was special to Chris keeps a part of him here with us- his heart and his soul. His love and his legacy.”

Tom Morello, “This guitar was an awful Budweiser promotional guitar” – Gibson Les Paul – Ace Frehley Pickups

Tom Morello: This guitar was an awful Budweiser promotional guitar that was left in a dressing room. During the Audioslave Revelation’s sessions I borrowed Cornell’s lighter, burned off the Budweiser logo, smoothed it out with some steel wool, slapped a couple Ace Frehley humbuckers in there, refretted the neck and it became the beautiful monster you see here which I’ve used on many, many recordings, the first of which was “Shape Of Things To Come.” #recycling

The limited edition Super Deluxe Edition 4-CD, 1-DVD, and audiophile 180-gram 7-LP box set holds 88 tracks – 64 songs plus 24 videos, with 13 recordings previously unreleased overall – from all stages of Chris’ career including Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave and his solo works. Creative Director for the project is Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog) who oversaw the project design including the 66-page hardcover photo book wrapped in linen with red foil signature, three artist lithos, three photochromatic lithos inspired by Cornell’s lyrical fascination about the sun, a vinyl turntable mat, a microfiber vinyl cleaning cloth, and a 36×48-inch wall poster. Liner notes contributions by Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Tom Morello, Mike McCready and Brendan O’Brien

The centerpiece to the collection is the newly discovered, unreleased track “When Bad Does Good” found in Chris’ personal audio archive which was performed, recorded and mixed by Chris himself. The Super Deluxe’s additional ten unreleased live performances include Cornell’s duet with Yusuf/Cat Stevens on “Wild World” and another duet with his daughter, Toni Cornell, on Bob Marley’s indelible classic, “Redemption Song.” Temple of the Dog’s 25th anniversary reunion/first-ever-official tour in 2016 is highlighted with hometown performances of “Reach Down” and the Andy Wood/Mother Love Bone favorite “Stargazer,” Chris’ personal arrangement of “One” featuring the lyrics to Metallica’s song set to the music of U2’s song of same name, and a first ever album release of Audioslave’s 2005 ground-breaking performance on Cuban soil of “Show Me How To Live.” Also in 2016, one of Chris’ personal career-topping moments was performing at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London where he covered The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life.” The three additional live selections from Sweden in 2006 “Wide Awake,” “All Night Thing” and Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” are from the very first show Chris performed by himself with an acoustic guitar in front of an audience which became the creative spark for his future, highly successful Songbook tours. Two unreleased music videos spotlight a solo acoustic performance of “Scream” and the newly edited Soundgarden video “Live To Rise,” showcasing the band only without The Avengers movie footage included.

Eddie Vedder & Chris Cornell on Daniel Johnston, “He Is Better Than Both Of Us” – Tribute

Eddie Vedder paid a beautiful and heartwarming tribute to Daniel Johnston on day 2 of the 2019 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California (September 28, 2019). Watch the video clip below.

“There was a guy, a great, great songwriter, who we lost less than a month ago,” Vedder said when speaking to the crowd. “I know Glen Hansard and everyone from Kurt Cobain to Lana Del Rey, an endless list of musicians, who were inspired by this man. He lived in Austin, Texas as a kid and started making tapes. Then he put them in a store and made copies of the tapes and the tapes got around to musicians. Before you knew it, everybody was talking and sharing the genius of this young man.
“That was quite a while ago, I think in the mid- to late-80s. He made music until he recently passed. He had a tricky time, but out of that tricky time came some of the most poignant songs and vulnerable heart that I’ve ever heard.”
He continued: “I remember Chris Cornell and I listening to him. We were sitting in this little room in my house where there’s a fireplace and a small couch — it’s not even a couch, it’s like half a couch. I didn’t want to say love seat because it might sound a little weird. But we listened for two hours straight and that turned into four hours and that turned into six hours.
“We were laughing and crying and then smiling so hard that tears were squeezed out of our eyes. We looked at one another, and I’ll never forget, we said, ‘He is better than both of us.’ His name was Daniel Johnston.” READ MORE

Chris Cornell + Black Hole Petition – Sign

Peter Frampton: “National Science Foundation: Name the black hole after Chris Cornell”

Sign the petition at this location.

_______________________________________

Almost two years ago, we lost Chris Cornell. He was the lead singer for Soundgarden and Audioslave, and above all, the voice of an entire generation. He was one of the most beloved figures not just in rock, but all of music, by people from all over the world. His music, his voice and his personality inspired, influenced, changed and even saved the lives of thousands of people. Chris left a heavy legacy for a new generation of musicians who follow in his footsteps. His memory will remain forever alive in the hearts of all his family, friends, fans and all the people who love him, and his music will do the same in each record, song or video we play.

“Black Hole Sun”, written by Chris Cornell is without a doubt Soundgarden’s most recognizable and most popular song, and one of the biggest anthems of the 90’s. For this reason, and the impact Chris Cornell had in the lives of so many and music itself, I ask NASA, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration and all the astronomers and scientists involved in this discovery, to name this black hole after Chris Cornell. This would be a “surreal” and amazing way to honor his life and his contribution to music. READ MORE
