2015 was a nearly ideal growing season. It began with a warm winter and above average temperatures continued through the summer. Light scattered showers in late August and a return to normalcy in September gave a break to what was an intense growing season. The result was concentrated, balanced fruit throughout one of the driest and warmest vintages in Oregon’s winemaking history.
The fruit was 100% destemmed and underwent an indigenous ferment in two and five-ton stainless steel open top tanks. The grapes were allowed to “infuse” as whole berries at a moderate temperature, in an oxygen rich environment until pressed. The wine then matured in 100% French oak barriques (25% new) for 12 months.
The wine shows layers of floral red fruit supported by notes of char, briar and retrained oak. The palate is youthful and energetic, driven by vibrant strawberry, cherry and plum flavors with savory notes adding depth. Well-integrated tannins fill the mouth while a fresh, mineral line of acidity provides structure and clarity towards the long finish.
“Focused, complex and light-footed, with floral strawberry and cherry aromas and sleek flavors that accent the mineral and savory spice details.” Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (December 2017)
“Vivid red. Aromas of fresh red berries and cherry pit reveal subtle rose pastille, rhubarb and white pepper flourishes. Bitter cherry, raspberry and spicecake flavors show very good clarity, and a snap of juicy acidity provides energetic lift. The cherry and floral notes cling nicely on a long, incisive finish framed by fine-grained, nicely integrated tannins.” Josh Raynolds, Vinous (January 2018)
“Sporting a pale to medium ruby-purple color, the 2015 Two Messengers is a little subdued at this stage, displaying faint red currant and cranberry notes with charcoal, underbrush and truffle suggestions. The palate has a nice, firm structure of grippy tannins and refreshing acidity supporting the savory and earthy flavors, finishing with good length.” Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate (August 2017)
