A new biography offers a different angle on the “almost” love story between *Grease* co‑stars Olivia Newton‑John and John Travolta. In A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton‑John, author Matthew Hild writes that Newton‑John was so drawn to Travolta during the making of the 1978 musical that she briefly imagined marrying him. The Daily Mail reports that, many years later, she quietly tried to understand what that might have meant in practical terms, given Travolta’s long‑standing commitment to Scientology.
According to the book, Newton‑John approached a musician in her band who had once been married to a Scientologist and asked, “If I had married John, would he have expected me to become a Scientologist?” She was told that it would not have been compulsory, but that she would likely have been strongly encouraged to join. Newton‑John is said to have replied, “Thank you. That’s all I want to know.” Travolta, who converted to Scientology in 1975, remains one of its most visible adherents, and while the church does not forbid mixed marriages, its role has been debated in other Hollywood relationships.
Publicly, both stars always framed their relationship as a near‑miss shaped by circumstance. In her 2019 memoir Don’t Stop Believin’, Newton‑John acknowledged their mutual attraction but wrote, “We would never date because we were both involved with other people at the time and both of us have a loyalty streak that runs deep.” Travolta, in a passage he contributed to the same book, echoed that feeling: “It almost happened between us a few times, but it didn’t. Sometimes life just offers you the wrong timing.” Their Grease co‑star Didi Conn, however, recalled that Travolta’s feelings seemed obvious on set, especially during an alternate ending kiss. “They weren’t acting in that moment, it was like he had his chance and he was going to take it,” she said. “It was real, it really was.”
Despite the what‑ifs, Newton‑John and Travolta built a close friendship that lasted for decades, standing by each other through marriages, children, career highs and personal loss. Travolta has reflected on that connection by pointing to the unique impact of *Grease*, saying that when you share “that kind of meteoric success” and nothing ever surpasses it, “you share a bond.” Newton‑John’s own romantic life ultimately took a different path: she married actor Matt Lattanzi in 1984, welcoming daughter Chloe Rose before their 1995 divorce, and later wed businessman and environmentalist John Easterling in a 2008 Incan spiritual ceremony in Peru. Travolta married actress Kelly Preston in 1991 and remained with her until her death from breast cancer in 2020.
