Mitch Margo of The Tokens Dies @ 70 + “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”

Singer-songwriter Mitch Margo died of natural causes on November 24th in Studio City. He was 70 years old.
Along with his brother Phil Margo, Mitch was a member of The Tokens, a doo-wop-style vocal group behind the hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1961. Other hits by The Tokens include: “Tonight I Fell In Love” (co-written by Mitch Margo), “I Hear Trumpets Blow” (written by Mitch Margo), “He’s In Town” and “Portrait of My Love.”
In addition to a music career, Mitch also created artwork and animation. He illustrated children’s books, including the award winning “The Very First Adventure of Fulton T. Firefly.”
