Jake E. Lee: “We’re trying to stir things up a little bit”

Red Dragon Cartel’s Jake E Lee (Ozzy, Badlands) recently spoke to That Just Happened at Obscenic Arts Recording Studio in Pennsylvania, where the guitarist has been working on his band’s sophomore album, Patina.

In an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview, Lee give us access into his “Guitar-senal,” which includes his signature Charvel guitar and lots of other vintage beauties. Excerpts from the interview can be found below.

Jake’s “Guitar-senal”:

For the first time in my career I have a wide choice of guitars.  It’s always been just me and the Charvel on all the Ozzy, all the Badlands and my solo stuff.  It’s just been my guitar.  I have a friend who can afford it.   We have a ’56 Gretsch, ’58 TV (Gibson Les Paul) Special,  I think it’s early 60’s Monza, ’68 Paisley (Fender Telecaster) , ’65 335 (Gibson ES-335) and a whole slew of other ones that my friend, Dave, is loaning me. It’s really cool because now I can find a specific guitar for a specific part, so everything sounds just right. We have one song where it’s definitely ’69 Les Paul. We have another song where it’s absolutely ’56 Gretsch and those are two different animals. There’s going to be a wide variety of sounds and songs on this (album).

On what he hopes to accomplish with the new record:

I said this in interviews before and I really looked like an asshole. My end goal isn’t to please people. I suppose that is what an entertainer is supposed to do; give people what they want. That’s not why I do it, that’s not why I’ve ever done it – I do it for me. I sound selfish but I think you have to be true to yourself. I make music that I want to hear, I just hope other people like it also. If they don’t, oh well, they don’t have to buy it. I do think that they should give it a listen because it’s interesting. We’re trying to stir things up a little bit. We’re not playing it safe and just doing exactly what people expect.
