In the mid‑’80s, Dokken looked like a sure bet for hard‑rock superstardom, but behind the scenes the classic lineup of Don Dokken (vocals), George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass), and “Wild” Mick Brown (drums) was coming apart at the seams. Years of simmering tension between Don and Lynch over control, ego, and money peaked around the *Back for the Attack* and Monsters of Rock era, with each later accusing the other of trying to seize the band’s future for himself. Don has described suffering anxiety attacks and self‑medicating while feeling ganged up on by Lynch, Pilson, and Brown, eventually telling management and Elektra Records that he could not continue in a band with George even after the label dangled a reported ten‑million‑dollar offer for two more albums. Lynch has countered in interviews that Don tried to “take the whole thing and run with it” financially, saying that when the big payday finally arrived, the singer wanted it all and “pretty much kick us to the side.”
The video above captures Don’s side of that era in brutally simple terms, with him recalling how “those guys snorted up…” their money and chances, a quick but telling snapshot of how excess, resentment, and clashing ambitions turned one of the ’80s most promising bands into a cautionary tale.
