WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE – In the early days of Megadeth, everything revolved around Dave Mustaine’s need to outdo the band that had just fired him. After being kicked out of Metallica in 1983, he went back to Los Angeles and slowly built a new unit around bassist David Ellefson, eventually locking in jazz‑fusion players Gar Samuelson on drums and Chris Poland on lead guitar. That classic mid‑’80s lineup spent their first years living hand‑to‑mouth, burning through money on addictions while woodshedding material that was faster and more technically twisted than almost anything else on the Strip. On the strength of a three‑song demo they landed a deal with Combat Records and cut *Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!* in 1985, then took it on the road across the U.S. and Canada with Exciter, playing clubs and small theaters while Mustaine’s reputation as the ex‑Metallica guitarist slowly turned into a new identity as Megadeth’s driving force. The video below you taps straight into that era, when the band was still hungry, volatile, and just starting to realize that this “revenge project” was becoming one of thrash metal’s defining names.
