Skid Row Frontman Erik Grönwall on Leukemia Battle: “All I wanted was to survive” – 2023

Erik Grönwall:

This day ONE year ago I flew in to meet Skid Row for the first time as their new lead singer.

This day TWO years ago I was diagnosed with leukemia.

No matter how unfair life might seem right now, just know that this is how fast it can get better 👇🏻

1st picture: In 2021 I was fighting leukemia. All I wanted was to survive, to live to see my son grow up and to get back on stage. To do what I love the most.

2nd picture: In the beginning of 2022 Rachel Bolan of SKID ROW reached out to me and asked if I wanted to join the band. 6 months after my bone marrow transplant. Arrived in Vegas as the new lead singer of the legendary Skid Row and did my first show with the band.

3rd picture*: It’s 2023 and I’m touring the world as the lead singer of Skid Row.

I thought my life would be over at 33 but thanks to a lot of people I’m still above ground. I told myself I would sing until this voice can’t sing anymore if I would make it out of the hospital alive.
So that’s what I’m going to do.

Thanks for being here guys, I appreciate you!
Here’s to life, to wake up above ground and to doing what we love the most!

Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows: “If you think Ticketmaster sets the price of tickets, you’re wrong – the artist does” – 2022 – Taylor Swift – DOJ – Pricing

M. Shadows:

If you think Ticketmaster sets the price of tickets… you’re wrong – the artist does.

If the supply is 52 stadiums but the demand is 900 stadiums (per NYT’s) you don’t automatically deserve a ticket because you are a fan. Demand exceeded supply!

Per dynamic pricing…. Artists have watched front row tickets go for 10x-20x face value from scalpers but see none of the upside. Ask yourself if that is fair. It may suck… but is it fair?

Leave it to grandstanding politicians to get involved in something they know nothing about…. And leave it to artists to shrug their shoulders and point the blame.

Poison’s Rikki Rockett Speaks the Truth: “Social media is the new propaganda machine” – 2022

Rikki Rockett:

I don’t like talking politics, but it’s all the rage these days I suppose!

When I was growing up, my mom’s side of the family were republicans and my dad’s side were Democrats. We all shared holidays, birthdays and events. Did they argue? Sure, they did. What East coast family doesn’t? But, at the end of the day there was a level of respect that we have lost today. The pot shots today are insane! Back then, the most divisive thing was probably Rock vs Disco! Lol! Now, people want a civil war if they don’t get their way. Maybe Devo was right about the future… Ju DeEvolution? Don’t get me wrong, it can be healthy to be spirited about your beliefs. However, I now see people adopting beliefs simply based on the party they have chosen.

I have gone from Republican to Libertarian to Independent in just a few short years. I care about policies, not parties.

The current situation is insane, and I blame social media. Social media has helped to create a culture war. At the heart of what people think is political is more a culture jam. Social media is the new propaganda machine.

I personally don’t care if someone in Iowa is out back shooting bottles and cans with their AR any more than I care if some person in Chicago decides to identify as a different sex. Who gives a crap?! It’s a problem when it’s weaponized and used to hurt someone. That’s when I think we as people should care.

I hear both sides lash out statistics to support whatever thing they are trying to get across and I get that, but remember that figures don’t lie, but liars’ figure! Let me say that again for the people in the back… Figures don’t lie, but liars’ figure!

All this election stuff has me thinking… Do we have a Democracy anymore?

Alice Cooper Guitarist Kane Roberts: “You live and earn the life YOU WANT TO LIVE” – 2022

Kane Roberts:

People gonna fuck with you…try and get you off your game. Try to exert power over you at your expense. Fuck them. Make them SERVE YOU. In truth they are mindless objects existing solely to test your resolve. Roadblocks you STEP OVER or SHOVE OUT OF YOUR WAY because there’s NO CLEAR PATH TO SUCCESS. This ride’s gonna end soon enough…know what I’m saying? You live and earn the life YOU WANT TO LIVE. And when the phone rings and you recognize their number…

Sean Ono Lennon: “It’s about how you live and treat others that makes you good or bad” – 2022

Sean Ono Lennon:

Tired of this current phenomenon of dehumanizing groups of ppl or ppl we believe represent groups of ppl. Everyone is doing it, the left, the right, the far left, the far right, the dumb, the brilliant, the midwits—we all do it sometimes, but it has to stop.

As we sit here deep in the trenches of our orchestrated polarization, it is now that we must stand up and unplug from the mob mentality and remember that human beings matter more than opinions.

I mean the smartest person ever said he knew nothing, so we can’t pretend we know enough to judge someone because they think or look or speak differently than we do. Give them the benefit of the doubt unless they are literally mid kick to your head.

And maybe Socrates wasn’t the smartest person ever, but he was certainly one of them. My point is that HE was humble, and that means we all can be too.

And I know I said I don’t like governments and you could say ‘ha! they’re a group of ppl!’ but I didn’t mean I don’t like the people who comprise the govt. what I mean is that the concept of a government seems to either be fiction-meaning there is no government per se, just those w special rights, and those w out, (which doesn’t mean I hate groups like democrats or republicans or socialists or libertarians…because those groups are neither good nor bad, they’re just ideas)—OR that the concept of govt. is at least flawed from a moral perspective. Even in the best case it requires ‘special rights’ for ‘special people.’ Which is really just a way of describing a legal mafia. And maybe that IS the best we can do. I really don’t know.

Of course, I do personally prefer some of those ‘ideas’ to others. But as for the humans who identify with those groups, I judge them as individuals. Are they nice? Do they treat others w kindness? Can they laugh at themselves? That’s what matters to me.

We have plenty of historical monsters who represent all sides of the political spectrum, from fascists to communists, so it’s not so much about political leanings, it’s about how you live and treat others that makes you good or bad.

I feel like I may be only making enemies here but whatever. We have to give each other a break. None of us have solved the problems of humanity so let’s just step back a little, try and listen more and judge less.

Using migrants—human beings w families—as a political gotcha tool is not funny no matter how sound your logic or if you say ‘the other side does this other thing that justifies’ no it doesn’t. Nothing justifies using actual humans as a gotcha. It’s lives we’re talking about.

I just think the powers of division are finally splitting our society apart. Splitting us apart from each other and our humanity. And I’m sick of it. I’m pretty sure most everyone is.

So just don’t fall for the trap of being fomented into a state of unconsciousness where your amygdala shuts down your pre-frontal cortex and you start seeing strangers as non-human. That’s the beginning of the end. We just can’t let that happen. Period.

The idea itself that ‘the left do this’ and ‘the right do this’ is really just an illusion. Some people do things who identify with these abstract labels. Those people never represent everyone in that group. And the group itself is an imaginary construct.

Skid Row Singer Erik Grönwall Offers Advice to Upcoming Artists – 2022

Erik Grönwall: People often ask me what advice I would give to upcoming artists. And I feel like I never give a good answer. So I thought about it and here’s a start.

1. Work hard and smart. Some of the talent you possess is genetic. But in order to actually turn that into something of value you need hard work. There are a lot of talented unsuccessful people out there. To simplify, let’s define success as being able to wake up every day and do whatever you want to do with your time (in this case: being an artist). To get what you want you have to deserve what you want.

2. You are nothing without your fans. They are the only reason you can live your dream. Take good care of them and they will take good care of you.

3. Build consistency. I know songwriters who go to the studio every day and write a song, even if it sucks. You don’t see them having 365 hits a year. Maybe 1… or 2… if they’re lucky.

4. Learn how to deal with adversity. You will get a lot of “no thank you” throughout your whole career.

5. Seize the opportunities. Remember this: NO ONE is irreplaceable. You may be unique but in a competitive world of almost 8 billion people you are not unique enough to be able to afford to say no. Especially not when you’re starting your career.

6. Learn how to produce and/ or write songs. Especially if you don’t have money to pay someone to do it for you. There’s a lot of value and freedom in being able to produce and/ or write your own music. Don’t wait for others to make it happen. Play it as much as possible according to your goals, schedule and availability.

7. Be respectful to everyone you meet and work with. Promoters, labels, publishers, managers. You will have highs and lows in your career. More lows than highs. The people you meet on the way up will be there on your way down. If you’re a whiny, complaining, disrespectful son of a bitch (pardon my Swedish) and no one wants to work with you… well good luck getting back up.

8. Oh yes. Health. You are nothing without your health. Take good care of your body, mind and spirit. Drugs is not rock n roll. What’s truly rock n’ roll is being able to wake up every day and live your dream.

Jazz Tenor Saxophonist Sonny Rollins: “I found the Golden Rule again” – 2022

Sonny Rollins:

Even though I can’t blow my horn anymore, I can still think and do my music in my head. I’m grateful for that. Music is so great, and so great to me. However, this stupid crazy world won’t go away and give me my peace. That was until I found out how to deal with the stupidity of it all. I found something I’ve known about all my life. I found the Golden Rule again. Most people have heard about the Golden Rule but never really focused on it. Never really checked it out. Here is what the Golden Rule did for me:

I’m not about trying to get over on somebody else by lying, cheating, or stealing from them. As the Golden Rule says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Okay?

I’ve had people lying, cheating, and stealing on me. We all have. And I didn’t like it. So doing it back to someone was not an option. My life changed when I began accepting the Golden Rule. Every endeavor became a positive endeavor. My world became positively positive. I began to understand that everything in life doesn’t start and end with me! “I have to get mine first, and never mind anyone else.”

This kind of thinking makes you an unhappy, ignorant person—just as I was. Look, the Golden Rule is a start. I am learning every day, and now I can do my music mind with my Golden Rule mind. So far so good for me. It’s all good.

Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider on Bands Who Say Farewell & Then Come Back: “We always considered that a bullshit, pussy move”

Dee Snider:

Twisted Sister promised ourselves we wouldn’t be like every other band, doing a farewell, then coming back. We always considered that a bullshit, pussy move…. Yeah, you know who I’m talking about (every artist who pulled that shit).

To further expound…I don’t think any band should retire unless they want to. Stay forever; your fans don’t want you to go. But don’t say farewell, sell us the higher priced ticket, the goodbye program, and the “No More Tours” t-shirt…then come back a couple of years later!

Someone once wrote, “When a reunion show is good, it makes you feel young again. But when a reunion show is bad, it makes you realize how old you have gotten.” I never want people to see me and feel they are old. #movingon

Virgin Records Founder Richard Branson on Russia/Ukraine Tension: “Never in recent years has there been a greater risk of an all-out war” – 2022

Richard Branson: Here’s my thoughts on why the world must support Ukraine, which voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons in return for Russia “respecting the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine”.

Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine and violation of the Budapest Memorandum is a threat to the rule of law that humanity hasn’t seen since the dark days that led to World War II.

But never in recent years has there been a greater risk of an all-out war on European soil – a war that, like so many before it, does not serve a just or legitimate objective. (It’s hard for any of us to hide our exasperation at this point. In 2022, what on earth is one country doing amassing tanks at another country’s borders?)

This situation is not just bad news for Ukraine in this very moment of acute crisis; it is bad news for every nation, present, and future, seeking to protect its sovereignty.

The world must support Ukraine. We must not abandon a country that voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons in return for peace, and is now on the verge of being invaded by the very country that persuaded it to do so.
