5254 Dual Diode Bridge Compressor by Rupert Neve Designs – VIDEO – Tutorial – Info

Rupert Neve Designs: …how does it sound? The best way to audition any gear is to try it in your own setup, but this video series is here for when that’s not an option. Hear how the 5254 Dual Diode Bridge Compressor brings out the attack of the electric guitar while smoothing out the dynamics and enhancing the overall ambience of the track.

5254
Dual Diode Bridge Compressor

Two channels of iconic diode bridge compression, thoughtfully improved and refined for modern tracking, mixing, and mastering.

Originally developed for the dynamics circuit of the acclaimed Shelford Channel, the 5254 Dual Diode Bridge Compressor captures the soul of Rupert Neve’s original 2254 compressor while providing modern updates including advanced timing control, significantly lower noise, fully stepped controls throughout, and internal parallel processing capabilities.

What is diode bridge compression?

Where the VCA compressor found in the Master Buss Processor provides unmatched clarity, the weighty, harmonically rich tonality of diode bridge compression can be essential in pushing key sources like vocals, electric guitars, bass and drums to the forefront of a mix.

By understanding the limitations of vintage units like the legendary 2254, painstaking effort was taken to reproduce the unique tone of these classics while improving the noise floor & accuracy, expanding inflexible time constants, adding full wave sidechain detection for improved dynamic response, and widening the range of threshold and ratio controls.

Delivering the powerful sound of these iconic designs with enhanced flexibility for the modern age, the 5254 Dual Diode Bridge Compressor is a dynamic tool equipped to make a bold statement on virtually any mix or track.

Classic Diode Bridge Tone
Capture the punchy, larger-than-life tone used on countless hit records for the last 50 years.

Advanced Timing Controls
Custom-shape your compression envelope with the unified timing control, which enables a much wider range of responses than vintage units or clones.

Custom Transformers and Class-A Line Amplifiers
Vintage warmth meets the improved headroom and precision of Rupert Neve’s updated transformer-coupled line stages.

31-Position Detented Controls
Accurately recall and match your settings with precision and speed.

Built-In Parallel Compression
Internal blend control enables you to subtly dial in more dramatic compression settings for color as desired.

Full-Wave Sidechain Detection
Enhanced from the vintage units’ half-wave design, the updated sidechain detector provides substantially more accuracy.

Stereo Linking
Run your compressors in either dual mono or stereo configurations.

Internal Universal Power Supply
EIC connection for world-wide AC power from 90-240V embedded in the 1U rack-mountable chassis.

The GREAT Rupert Neve Has Died – 2021 Tributes

Grateful to have lived on this planet at the same time he did…

Rupert Neve Designs: It is with great sadness that we announce that Rupert Neve has died.

Company Statement:

It is with great sadness that we announce that Rupert Neve, whose name is synonymous with quality audio recording equipment worldwide, has died. He remained in great spirits to the end, enjoying his life in Wimberley, Texas, where he and his wife Evelyn have lived for 27 years. At 94, Rupert remained engaged and passionate about his work, spending most days on a perpetual series of audio electronics projects and continuing to mentor our engineering team on numerous design and development projects.

From his earliest memories, Rupert had a love for music, electronics, and problem-solving. These passions sparked a brilliant design career spanning over 80 years, during which he founded several historic companies, created the most revered analog audio equipment of all time, and became the most trusted name in sound. He received countless accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Technical GRAMMY Award in 1997, Studio Sound Magazine’s Audio Person of the Century Award in 1999, an Audio Engineering Society Fellowship Award in 2006, and 16 TEC (Technical Excellence and Creativity) Awards with Rupert Neve Designs.

“I’ve known and worked with Rupert for nearly 30 years,” said Josh Thomas, Rupert Neve Designs’ co-founder and general manager. “When Rupert, his wife Evelyn, and I sat at his kitchen table and founded Rupert Neve Designs 16 years ago, he had two goals. The first was to set a new standard in the quality of recorded sound, drawing upon his unparalleled depth of experience to create high-end solutions for the modern recording engineer, musician, and listener alike. The second was to pass on his philosophies, techniques, and methodologies to a new generation of designers to carry his life’s work and passion into the future.

“It was always assumed that the company would outlive him on this earth, and for 16 years he poured his energies into creating a team that would become the caretakers of the theories, practices, and ideologies that truly constitute a Rupert Neve design. All of us at the company are exceedingly grateful for the years of careful instruction and mentoring with which he has blessed us, and we will continue to preserve his legacy in everything we do moving forward. The world certainly sounds better because he was here.”

While Rupert’s passions for music, creativity, and insistence on exceptional quality have made an indelible mark on the fabric of the recording industry, his kindness and generosity made him a legend to us all. Through his designs and through the music created with them, his spirit will live on eternally. God bless you, Rupert.

Arrangements for a celebration of his life for family and friends will be made when it is safe to do so.

Sonic Youth’s Neve Console For Sale – A10047 Custom 51-Series

The Sonic Youth Neve 1982/1983 A10047 Custom 51-Series console could be yours at this location.

When Sonic Youth needed to replace the console for their Manhattan studio in 1999, they acquired this National Film Board of Canada-commissioned custom Neve, one of two custom consoles. The console could mix in the then-still-novel 5.1 surround format. The consoles were expensive, carefully-pieced-together partly from existing Neve components (the channels were largely built from modified modules from the 5106/5116 desks) while other sections were completely custom, created specifically for the NFB.

Finally, the whole thing was contained in a brilliantly extravagant wrap-around producer’s desk setup, with integrated 19” racks and the best patch-bay location anyone had ever seen. The console had no mic preamps of its own, as they would be unnecessary for surround film mixing.

Neve 5088 @ Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio w/ Steve Chadie

Steve Chadie is the Chief Engineer at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio, located just outside of Austin, TX. Recently, Chadie talked about the studio’s new Neve 5088, riding faders while tracking Willie, and more. The interview has been embedded below.

The 5088 is a culmination of Mr. Rupert Neve’s vast analogue circuitry knowledge. As his first fully discrete mixing design in over 30 years, the 5088 incorporates and improves upon many of the same concepts, such as the single-sided, fully discrete amplification and complete transformer isolation that made his original designs so revered – except unlike many of those aging classics, maintenance is no longer a full time job.

Sound Without Compromise
To stay current in the recording business you must be able to continuously adapt your environment to the needs at hand. Because the 5088 is completely modular, channel strips and Portico processing modules like EQ, microphone preamplification and dynamics can be added or removed to meet constantly changing demands and eliminate the massive redundancies of consoles from yesteryear. If you don’t need it, your console doesn’t need it either.

The Input Channel
5088-Channel Description Beyond its exceptional sound quality, the 5088 channel strip is designed to effectively handle multiple normalled sources, creating master, group and aux mixes with great efficiency. With 8 auxes, 8 “Groups”, “Solo”, “Mute”, “Send Follows Pan”, “Aux to Group”, a transformer coupled direct out and optional motorized fader automation on each channel, even the most complex mixes are within reach.
The Stereo Input Channel
Stereo Channel description In lieu of mono input channels with selectable Line 1 / Line 2 Inputs, Stereo Input Channels can be fitted to increase the channel count without having to add an expansion chassis. The Stereo Module has all of the group sends, six auxes, stereo width control, and individual trims and pans for each channel.

The Group Channel
Group Channel DescriptionWith 4 pairs of FX returns and aux master controls, alongside high-quality 100mm faders, direct outs and transformer-coupled inserts for each of the 8 mix groups, the group master section provides the medium to control 4 stereo stem mixes while tying together an entire array of channel strips. If necessary, the insert returns and stereo FX returns can be used as an additional 16 inputs for summing.
The Monitor Master
shelford-monitor-section-description-sqThe monitor master section has 6 source selections, 3 transformer-coupled speaker outputs, talkback, oscillator controls, 2 VU meters, stereo inserts, stereo level and control room master level. As with the the channel and group modules, anodized aluminum knobs provide the solid feel and response needed for precise adjustments.

SwiftMix™ Automation
swiftmix-iconBuilt around state-of-the-art motorized faders and DAW control over ethernet, SwiftMix combines the accuracy and convenience of digital automation with the unrivaled analogue sound of the Rupert Neve Designs 5088 Console.

Shelford Channel – Transformer Gain Mic Pre, Inductor EQ, Diode Bridge Compressor

A Whole New Vintage – Over fifty years in the making, the Shelford Channel is the definitive evolution of the original technologies in Rupert’s classic console modules like the 1073, 1064, 1081 & 2254, thoughtfully advanced and refined for the 21st century studio. The Shelford Channel is built around Rupert Neve’s first new transformer-gain, class-A microphone preamplifier in over 40 years, the “best-of-the-classics” inductor EQ section from the Shelford 5052, a tone-packed Diode bridge compressor, the analog power of variable Silk saturation, a new dual-tap transformer output stage for maintaining headroom or allowing the full driving of the Channel without clipping standard converters, and twice the operating voltage of vintage designs.

The Input Stage and Transformer Gain Mic Pre

Like Rupert’s designs from his time in Little Shelford , the Shelford Channel’s preamplifier uses a directly-coupled transformer input with gain provided by the custom transformer itself – a first in over 40 years for Rupert Neve. This new custom-designed input transformer, along with its careful integration with the surrounding circuitry, is critical to the Channel’s bold and instantly recognizable character.

“It sounds like the best aspects of the 1073 and 1066’s. It sounds so familiar and comforting, and the compressor is mind blowing. You can move in fine brush strokes, but it can also be a bulldozer.”

Craig Ross (Patty Griffin, Spoon)
Shelford Channel

“After working on a vintage Neve console for 10 years, it’s exciting to hear the Shelford sound like a 1073 and 2254 are supposed to, but without all the baggage. ”

Mitch Dane (Jars of Clay)

“This piece to me just sounds classic. ”

Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price)

““I’m pissed that it took so long to put all of this into one box. This is ALL the best stuff.” ”

Reid Shippen (Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum)

“You’re going to need two of these. One will not be enough.”

Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton)
