Daze with Jordan the Lion: Home & Grave of DIMEBAG DARRELL & VINNIE PAUL w/ Stories From VIDEO BOB.

Video Bob:
When Darrell (Dimebag Darrell Abbott) was killed, Vinnie (Vinnie Paul Abbott) wanted to kind of preserve his (Darrell’s) legacy and started his own record company in 2006 called Big Vin Records. He hired me to work at his record label. So, I worked for Vinnie from 2006 until his death, maintaining his social media, doing promotional stuff, videos, music videos. I drove his tour bus, limo, and he was just one of my closest friends.
When Vinnie hired me, he hired me because he did know that I was responsible. He knew he could trust me to drive for him, drive their tour bus, take care of things, so that he could take advantage of that and just get plastered. He liked Skyy Vodka; he would buy cases of that. He had a Big Gulp cup, and he would just fill that thing up with vodka and a little water and lime. He would just drink that all the time, and when you do that all the time…he had cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart, and he just woke up one morning and had a heart attack.
He gave me opportunities that I would’ve never gotten had I not met him. I fully recognize that. He made my dreams come true of making music videos that played on MTV. I got to tour with him. I got to meet all these amazing people, and it was all because of him and his generosity. The dude would go to the store and buy two thousand dollars’ worth of steak and lobster and cook it for everybody, including the other touring bands. Everybody loved Vinnie because he was just so generous. When we were on tour with Hellyeah, some of the other opening bands, they were making so little money they could hardly afford food. He would cook for them. He would barbeque out by the bus and feed the other bands and crew.
When I put together a drum kit for my band, I said, “Hey, would you go down to Guitar Center with me so I could get a drum set?” He said, “Dude, we’re not going to do that.” He took me to his warehouse and pulls out a big Pantera road case, opens it up and says: “Man, Pantera hasn’t played since 2001. I play with ddrum now, this is all Pearl equipment. You can have it.”
Everybody in the world has been contacting me about my opinion on the ‘Pantera reunion.’ I try to reserve my judgement simply because I know that the people who are behind it are the people who now own the estate, and they need to make a living, and they want to do it. But I think if I listen closely, I can actually hear them (Vinnie & Darrell) spinning in the grave because every day this guy (Vinnie) would tell me about, you know, like, I was with him all the time. Every time we would meet somebody, they would walk up and say several things that would piss him off. They’d say, “Hey, I’m really sorry about your brother.” It’s like: “Oh, here we go. Every day of my life I’ve got to be reminded about the worst day of my life.” Then they’d follow it up with, “When is Pantera getting back together?”
He showed me an email, where he was offered, I don’t know, it was over ten million dollars to do a Pantera reunion tour, and he was just like, “Nope.” He goes, “Dude, I already got like six million in the bank, I don’t need more money.” He’s like: “Look, I love my brother. I don’t want to live in my brother’s shadow. I’m my own musician. There is no Pantera without Dimebag.” It’s like, there is no Van Halen without Eddie Van Halen. I mean, you can go out there and do it and call it whatever you want. Phil (Anselmo) has been out there performing Pantera songs for all these years.
He (Vinnie) was very bitter about it. He felt like if Phil and Rex (Rocker-Brown) hadn’t done what they had done at the time, Pantera would’ve continued. They never would’ve been playing a club where some fan would’ve jumped up. I mean, you can’t blame Phil directly for what happened, but at the same time, the butterfly effect of one person’s decision and how it effects the future is just the way he felt about it.
Vinnie was like, “Look, these two dudes destroyed this band. I’m not going to give them the satisfaction of cashing in on it later. I’m doing my own thing already, and it’s in the past.”

King’s X frontman dUg Pinnick talks about meeting Pantera in 1988, their friendship through the years, Dimebag Darrell, Rex Brown, Vinnie Paul, and the upcoming Pantera. You can listen to the entire interview clip via the embedded YouTube video below. An excerpt from the conversation has been transcribed.
EXCERPT:
full in bloom: Your thoughts on the Pantera reunion or celebration or whatever it’s going to be.
dUg Pinnick:
I have to say it this way, it’s none of my f***ing business. And whatever happens, I will be there, and I will support them.
full in bloom: Do you still talk to those guys?
Yeah. I have not talked to anybody since this has been announced. Even Charlie (Benante) and Zakk (Wylde), I know everybody, and I don’t want to. It’s none of my business. I really feel that. Even if I had an opinion, it doesn’t matter. It’s almost like it’s just something for everybody to gossip about. Actually, it’s great publicity, for sure. But I’m not there. I wasn’t in the room when they talked about it. I’m not around any of them in that capacity where I’m in the business side of it. So, that’s the way I look at it. I just take the Fifth.
Phil Anselmo:
He’s loved, always in mind & badly missed. It’s his birthday, light it up!

During a conversation with SIRIUSXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk, guitarist Zakk Wylde and drummer Charlie Benante talked about the upcoming “Pantera Reunion” with Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown.
WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW

This excerpt was taken from a full in bloom interview with original Pantera vocalist Terry Glaze.
full in bloom: I had read Rex Brown’s book (Official Truth, 101 Proof: The Inside Story Of Pantera) recently.
Terry Glaze:
I read it.
You have some quotes in there. But in it, he just absolutely reams Vinnie Paul. Right after Darrell (‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott) died, I guess Rex had made a comment that pissed Vinnie off and Vinnie responded with, “If anyone got lucky in the band, it was Rex.” Really, I was just wondering because Rex makes him sound like he was so difficult, but when I was a kid, all the times I met Vinnie, he was incredibly cool.
I roomed with Vince the whole time I was in Pantera. Rex and Darrell roomed together. Yeah, when I read that, too, I just couldn’t believe how harsh Rex was on Vinnie. It was family-type thing and all the history that they’ve been together, I just couldn’t imagine doing that. Even if you felt that way, I couldn’t imagine doing that out in public.
Right. I mean, to go after him like that it seemed like it had to be a vendetta.
I saw Vince at Darrell’s funeral and all I know is I couldn’t imagine what Vince had to go through every single day he woke up and I wouldn’t want to know. If anyone deserved a break, I would think it would’ve been Vince.
How would you describe Vinnie at that time?
I don’t think anyone was difficult when there was no money involved and we were just doing it because we loved it. Everybody was pretty easy. I can’t imagine how hard it might’ve been once finances got involved. That’s usually where the difficult part comes in – when they started getting really big.
It said in the book that Phil (Anselmo) came up to you on the bus and said, “Now I know what you were going through.”
Well, something similar to that. Phil and I understood the other three like nobody else (laughs). I was big fan of Phil on those records. I thought he was amazing. My favorite Pantera record is ‘Vulgar Display of Power.’

Is that why you left?…Because of the dynamic between the three of them.
No, the reason I left is because the four of us, plus Vince and Darrell’s father (Jerry Abbott), we all voted, and the Abbotts, the three of them, never split their votes. So, it didn’t matter what I wanted to do, the Abbotts made all the decisions. Eventually, I just thought, “I don’t like what’s going on.” That’s why I left, and I’ll just tell you, I loved playing in that band. It wasn’t the two hours on stage, it was the other twenty-two hours of the day where we wanted to kill each other.
It’s funny to look back at the pictures and then hear Rex say on their Behind the Music episode, “I didn’t want to wear spandex.” When you look back, he was about the most glam in the band.
It’s fun for me that you were there, so I don’t have to explain it. You were there, you saw it (laughs).
I’m also assuming Rex didn’t write much of the music in Pantera.
Not that I remember.
During a 2013 interview with MetalSucks, Phil Anselmo said the following about Rex’s book:
Phil Anselmo:
“Honestly, Rex’s assessment of me – I don’t care. Egotistical, self-centered, everything is always about me. You know what? I’m a lead singer and he’s a bass player. That’s his perception. So, I’m fine with it. I don’t hold any fucking grudges. But I think he did take some angry swipes and I don’t need to be specific. There is a great deal of mythology when it comes to him ‘quitting’ DOWN. That particular chapter is a little disturbing.”
On how Rex’s book often painted Vinnie Paul in a negative light, Anselmo said:
“I’m not sure that type of beating was necessary. Vince was a difficult guy and was always a different type of guy. But did he deserve that type of beating? I don’t think so. It’s a shame.”
On “Rover’s Morning Glory” syndicated radio show hosted by Shane “Rover” French, Vinnie Paul said:
Vinnie Paul:
“All I can say is that… I’ll refer to Philip’s comment about Rex’s book. A bunch of mythology. We don’t know where he came up with all this. More power to him, man.”
During an interview with Metal Forces, Rita Haney (Darrell’s Life Partner) was asked about the book:
Rita Haney:
“Good lord… It’s not good to write a book when you don’t remember things, and you have other people telling you in your ear, ‘This is how it went down,’ when it didn’t. I got to chapter three, and I felt like I needed to get a highlighter out for things I knew were incorrect (laughs).”
On Vinnie Paul’s portrayal in the book, Rita said:
“Potshot, like, ‘Let’s try to take some potshots and stab at you,’ And yeah, it was pretty hateful. It’s the pot calling the kettle black. How can you throw stuff out there when you’re just as guilty or guilty of worse things? Some of the stuff is not yours to tell, or yours to judge.”
Brown defended his book during a 2013 interview with the “Energize With Lonn Friend” podcast:
Rex “Rocker” Brown:
“Apparently, Vinnie isn’t very flattered by it. Vinnie, then, he can write his own fucking book, you know. With Philip, I haven’t heard any rebuttals, but I didn’t say anything in the book that wasn’t already out there, you know what I’m saying?”
“I think the reason they haven’t talked to me is because it is the fucking truth. And sometimes you don’t want to tell the truth. And I didn’t go out of my way to maliciously hurt any individual. But at the same time, if you’re going to tell the truth, by God, you’d better be on the skinny.”

On page 172 of “Official Truth, 101 Proof: The Inside Story Of Pantera”, Brown said the following about Vinnie Paul:
“You need to understand that Vinnie is just a strange person — that’s all there is to it — and it’s either his way or the highway. I think he got most of that asshole-ishness from his old man, because in many ways they are very much alike.
Vinnie was always all about the ‘party, party, party!’ and ‘eat that pussy!’ type of shit — to the extent that he thought he was fucking David Lee Roth. And him a drummer, can you imagine? But the truth is that he only got laid maybe one out of ten times and that’s if he was lucky.
“Being in a platinum-selling band is meant to be a head start when you’re trying to score with chicks, but he negated that by having no idea whatsoever how to treat or approach a woman. He’d just walk up and immediately start groping them, so it was no surprise that his strike rate was so pitiful. He acted like meeting him was a sexual audition and that just turned them off straightaway.”
“And as if that wasn’t bad enough, when he didn’t get laid (ninety percent of the time, I’d estimate) he was the most miserable fucking guy on the planet. I just couldn’t live with him. He’d walk in the room in the morning, and I’d just know. He’d be all snappy and pissed off with everyone and there was nothing anyone could do to change his mood. That became really boring.”
Pantera is set to tour for the first time in over 20 years.
Nearly 20 years after breaking up, Pantera‘s surviving members are hitting the road for a long-hyped reunion tour in 2023 and have signed with Artist Group International to book their North American dates. Dennis Arfa and Peter Pappalardo will be the responsible agents.
“We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans,” said Pappalardo. –READ MORE

Zakk Wylde talked about a possible Pantera reunion on the “Do You Know Jack?” radio show on CKLB FM in 2014:
Zakk Wylde:
If somebody was to say a reunion, I’d go, well, it’s a reunion of Phil, Rex and Vincenzo (drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, who was still alive at the time). But I’m just saying, for me, it’s me going in and honoring and paying tribute at the same time.
People always ask me, “Is it ever gonna happen?” You know, that’s all up to the fellows. But I love the guys. I’m just a phone call away.
Prior to his death, Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul said on Wikimetal:
Vinnie Paul:
The bottom is they call it a reunion, and that means to bring the original members back, and we can’t bring Dime back, and he was such a huge part of Pantera. I don’t want to damage or tarnish the legacy of him or the band. We had 14 amazing years together and it’s time for everybody to move on.

Jim Carrey:
The first time I ever heard Pantera, I was driving down to San Diego to do a concert at a theater and to check into the hotel, and me and my manager at the time we put Pantera on and I had never heard anything like it. And it hit me on such a level of like extreme stimulation that I just started laughing uncontrollably for the entire track. I was just nervously laughing like, ‘What is happening right now?’ And then we went to check into the hotel and the guys behind us in the line, checking into the hotel, were Pantera. We turned around and went like, ‘Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? This is too weird, man.’ This is my life.”
Ivan de Prume: So cool to catch up with Phil Anselmo after all these years. This guy is so awesome. We have more in common than I ever knew.
