Ottmar Liebert: “In the corner of my studio, a little bit of history. Before digital recording and digital consoles one used artist tape to indicate what was on each of the recording tracks, in our case 24 tracks of analog 2” tape. This is from the sessions for the album Opium in 1995. Apparently we had a couple of pieces with the working title “Space Gypsy.”

In support of Beyond Borders, Spanish-influenced guitarist Jesse Cook will host a Facebook Live session to coincide with the album’s release. The Facebook event will take place on Friday (9/15) at 12PM PST / 3PM EST and will feature live music and a Q&A. Tune in at this location.
Pre-order Beyond Borders on iTunes to receive 3 instant downloads.
Beyond Borders was recorded over two years in Toronto and will be the follow-up to 2015’s One World. “Everything on this album comes from my own experience,” says Cook. “I was going through a difficult period in my life and it blew the door of my imagination wide open. I went for a huge sound, without limits. I threw away the rules, trying to find places I’d never been before, and I got there. The sad songs are sadder, the rhythms are more intricate, the sounds mashed up to look at traditional patterns in a new way.”
Spanish classical guitarist Angel Romero is now offering lessons to guitarists of intermediate and advanced levels. For more info, visit his official website.

Flamenco-inspired guitarist Jesse Cook released his new official video for “Double Dutch.” The song will appear on Cook’s upcoming album, Beyond Borders, available everywhere September 15th. The video has been embedded above.
Regarding the video, Cook commented: “Somehow I got it into my head that it would be fun to make a video for this new song “Double Dutch” and use real kids skipping. Next thing I know I’m making a video with Heidi and many of her friends, both kids and grown-ups, all of whom are championship level skippers. Apart from being amazing skippers, they were also wonderful, generous people, and we had a blast taking over some unsuspecting schoolyard one warm summer evening. A big thank you to all the skippers, and their parents.
The Skippers:
The Jump Rope Academy
(Kawartha, Toronto):
Heidi Collins
Breagha LaPierre
Brampton Acro Ropers:
Kathleen O’Callaghan
Armaan Walani

Jesse Cook’s Band:
Chendy Leon (percussion)

Video footage of Pepe Romero’s August 5th performance at the Festival de la Guitarra de Granada 2017 can be seen below.
Pepe was born in Málaga, Spain, in 1944. He is the second son of one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, Celedonio Romero – Pepe’s only guitar teacher. And he is brother to two more musical phenoms, Celin and Angel Romero.
By age seven, Pepe set foot on the concert stage for the first time, at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Sevilla. And now, more than sixty years later, he continues to mesmerize audiences throughout the world. During that time, he has given literally thousands of concerts worldwide, many with the remarkable Romero Quartet, and many as a solo instrumentalist. He has worked with almost every major conductor and has to his credit more than 60 recordings (among which are 20 concerto recordings with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, with both Neville Marriner and Iona Brown).
Flamenco-influenced guitarist Ottmar Liebert added several more dates to his North American tour. His touring lineup includes Jon Gagan on bass and Chris Steele on drums/percussion. A list of dates can be found below.
In 2016, Ottmar released Slow, a collection of songs that featured the guitarist minus his usual band setting. Regarding the album’s inspiration Liebert commented, “Sometime in 2015 I decided to record by myself, without the band, and that I wanted to create slow music. Love whispers while hate screams, and I decided to whisper so softly. I wanted to raise my guitar against the sound of billions of smartphones beeping with the latest news, mentions, likes, and comments, keeping us in a state of constant alarm. I made all of the music on this album with one guitar and one microphone.”
I tried to find a track from Slow to embed, but had no luck. Instead I embedded one of my personal favorites, a song called ‘Streelight’ from his 2008 album, The Scent of Light. The song also appears on his 2009 compilation album, Spanish Sun.
Ottmar Liebert is one of the few instrumental guitarists to achieve gold and platinum sales in the US. His debut album Nouveau Flamenco sold nearly 1.5 million in the US alone.
