CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BLACKMORE’S NIGHT

Blackmore’s Night were founded in 1997 by legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and award-winning lyricist and singer Candice Night to stage and explore their love for traditional Medieval and Folk-Rock music. Together, they created a band that like very few others is a prime example of truthfulness and creative integrity.

The band’s debut album “Shadow Of The Moon” (1997) was not only Blackmore’s deliberate radical cut from his previous life as celebrated rockstar in Deep Purple and Rainbow; it was a ground-breaking statement of his artistic ideals: mainly acoustic music, influenced by the songs of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with a touch of genius that made them sound contemporary. “Shadow Of The Moon” was a milestone album. It encompasses everything that Blackmore’s Night stand for to this day: beautiful melodies and warm atmospheres that are able to reach the soul as well as joyful songs to dance to and to celebrate.

The 25th Anniversary Edition of “Shadow Of The Moon” was converted in HD audio from the original recording, and it has been fully remixed, allowing the original performance to shine in its original glory. The original iconic artwork has been refreshed and reworked to celebrate the anniversary. Two previously unreleased acoustic recordings will be part of this reissue: “Spirit Of The Sea” and “Shadow Of The Moon”, both recorded in an intimate home session by Candice and Ritchie in 2022. All physical first print editions will also carry an exclusive “Shadow Of The Moon” documentary on DVD as bonus.

“It’s hard to believe that 25 years have gone by since the snowy nights spent by the fireplace writing these songs. Much has changed since those early days, but the magic of the music still shines as brightly as it did back then. We feel truly blessed to have been able to bring these songs to the world, and do so again, in this remixed reissue proving they truly do stand the test of time. For 25 years we have graced historical venues stages worldwide and now we are able to revisit again, with you, this beautiful version of “Shadow Of The Moon”. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed revisiting those early days. We find that the songs are still timeless…” (Candice Night & Ritchie Blackmore)

Last Saturday at the Michael Schenker show, I had the distinct pleasure of being introduced to vocalist Ronnie Romero. There was an instant bond between the two of us. We have so much in common as musicians but also as human beings. He’s a really great person. I was very happy to see him playing with all my old pals from MSG and doing an absolutely bang-up job!

Joe Lynn Turner on Taking Off His Wig & Working with Yngwie Malmsteen During the Odyssey Album: “He was like a trainwreck” – 2022

Metal Edge: Joe Lynn Turner talked to us about his heavy new album, (not) wearing a wig and his wild odyssey with Yngwie Malmsteen. You can read the entire interview @ this location.

An excerpt from the interview can be found below.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT:

During the course of your career, did the fact that you wear a wig ever become an issue with any artist or band you worked with?

Joe Lynn Turner:

It was an open secret. I wasn’t trying to hide it by wearing a wig, they didn’t care if it was a wig or not as long as it looked good, which I thought it did and which is why I wanted it. But I just decided it was time. It’s like a wine, no wine is good before its time. I’m older now and I can deal with that, but you still have to be courageous to do something like this. Plus, it’s a time for truth, for people to accept themselves, to motivate and inspire people no matter what the challenge is.

Graham Bonnet is an absolute hero because he was spot on, he came right out, he scolded the business side of it and all of their false pretensions because he was a subject of all of that too with Blackmore where his hair was too short, etc. Because we all had to wear a uniform. And today they’re still wearing uniforms, with the chains, the gear and the get ups, and the hair.

Earlier we were discussing the esoteric subject matter on your new album. I first came across your interest in these kind of topics after hearing your work with Yngwie Malmsteen on his Odyssey album, with songs such as “Déjà Vu” and ‘Crystal Ball.” How did you come to be part of that project?

Jim Lewis from Polygram had phoned me up and said, “Look, we want you to do with Yngwie what you did with Rainbow.” Which was to make Yngwie commercial but still keep the hard edge. And Jim knew I had the songwriting abilities and all. So I went out to California and met Yngwie, and he was like a trainwreck. I figured out psychologically I needed a whip and a chair like a lion tamer to find a way in so that he would welcome me. I guess because we partied heavy for three days and talked a lot, that sort of convinced him I was worthy.

Soon after that, I went back to New York to get some clothes and pack some stuff, and when I returned, Yngwie was in the hospital from a car accident. So instead of abandoning ship or anything I stayed in L.A. because with the Johansson brothers [keyboardist Jens Johansson and drummer Anders Johannson] I was the “elder” in the band. At one point we were going to have Bob Daisley and Eric Singer in the band, but Yngwie was rebelling against that because he wanted his Swedish guys in the band who were amazing players, yet there was a lot going on.

I was the one taking care of him in the hospital. I was getting wire transfers of $80,000 from Polygram to keep him in ICU to save his life, otherwise they were going to send him down to the county hospital. On top of that, he had a manager who spoke in the third person, had a Rolls-Royce and carried around cocaine and a .44 Magnum.

So I stayed there and took Yngwie’s tracks, and I just wrote to them and Odyssey became a very successful album. It had accomplished what we needed; it was commercial but at the same time it retained his identity, and I think he plays brilliantly on it, regardless of what people may say. But then he started to butt heads with me and there was no way I could stay in the band anymore, so I moved on.

Graham Bonnet on Joe Lynn Turner’s New Look: “I was moved to tears today when I saw it” – 2022 – Rainbow – Deep Purple – Alcatrazz

Graham Bonnet:

Hi all. Graham here. I’m posting this photo of my friend Joe Lynn Turner because I was moved to tears today when I saw it. Joe exemplifies the meaning of rockstar. His bravery is staggering. This industry is ruthless (especially in our genre), particularly when it comes to hair.

I still hear the tale about Ritchie Blackmore posting a guard at my hotel door to keep me from getting a haircut. BTW, that never happened, although he was so pissed when I did visit the barber. But I digress……

I don’t know if Joe will see this, but I want him to know how proud I am of him and how moved I was at his honesty. You have blazed a trail today, Joe. If you are reading this, I want you to know that I never realized what a beautiful man you were until I saw this photo. ♥️

Escape Open Air 2017 Announces Venue Change – Joe Lynn Turner

ATTENTION FANS IN GERMANY – ESCAPE OPEN AIR
FRIDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER
CHANGE OF VENUE

Escape Open Air, the two-day festival set in the stunning castle location of Wasserburg Rosslau in Germany, has announced a change of venue. Due to organizational / technical reasons, the festival will no longer take place at Wasserburg Rosslau. The new location is Beatclub – more info about the venue can be found HERE.

The official statement can be read below:

“Dear guests of the Escape Festival – our premiere sadly starts with a unforseen slip: Due to organizational / technical reasons the Wasserburg Rosslau is not available next week. Facing this fact we have decided to relocate the festival to a well know live-location in Dessau, the „Beatclub“. We ask for your understanding that we had to do this hard decision to guarantee an unlimited show as we’ve promised it before. There’s gonna be no change in the line up!

“Probably this unplanned change of the festival location turns out to become a blessing, because sadly all forecasts announce some bad weather for next week that doesn’t seem to be much open-air-friendly. There’s almost no change for the festival apart from the location – the festival-hotel-users will even find the location much closer to their accomodation that is only a short walk away. Very close to the main station it is easy to reach for train travellers, there are many parking spots around the „Beatclub“.

“We promise you to do anything in and around the „Beatclub“ to create the best possible festival feeling for you. We think, it’s more about the music, so hopefully you understand and accept the change.

“If you have any further question, please use the PM or send an e-mail to ppo.tickets@yahoo.de

Rock On – CU next week!”

Yngwie Malmsteen’s Manager Releases Statement about Past Vocalists

In a recent interview, guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen was asked whether he’d be open to reconnecting with some of the singers from his past. Here’s Malmsteen’s response:

I always wrote everything. I wrote all the lyrics, I wrote all the melodies, everything…it’s just somebody else sung it. And to me, the singer is like a bass player or a keyboard player. They’re not more important than any other musician. And they, unfortunately, seem to think that they are. I’ve kind of had it with their sort of self-absorbed way and I’m very much against it. No, I don’t like that. I don’t like any of those people, and I don’t like to do anything with them ever again.”

Former vocalist:

Jeff Scott Soto:

This is a fabulous statement, oh my! Can’t say I blame him; his vocal prowess has increased .05 fold the past two decades! Why would he want to work with horrible hacks like myself, Ripper or Joe… and deal with our egos… like wanting to hear ourselves onstage within the cavalcade of Marshall’s, or getting our measly salaries on time (or at all)… or maybe it was the desire to be ‘buds’ that got in the way? Carry on there Sing-vay, you got this!

“On a side note, I wrote more than 3/4 of the lyrics and 1/2 melodies for ‘I’ll See The Light Tonight’, all of the lyrics for ‘Caught In The Middle’ and ‘Don’t Let It End’ (he wrote the title and got 50% of authorship) and all of ‘On The Run Again’ (title included). So much for writing EVERYTHING, but you must admit, a Puerto Rican ‘faking’ the praises about a Viking was pretty convincing, no?”

Former vocalist:

Joe Lynn Turner:

In regard to the recent Malmsteen article, I feel compelled to rebut his delusional statements.

The Odyssey album was his biggest success that he has not since and will never repeat again. It’s undeniable that I am responsible for 50% of the writing credits namely the melody and lyrics and 100% of the vocal performances.

“Malmsteen’s statements can only be taken as the rantings of a megalomaniac desperately trying to justify his own insecurity. His claim that ‘singers’ are too egotistical is moronic and pathetic coming from him. The fact that he would lash out at all the great vocalists and respectful gentlemen that he had the good fortune and honor to work with is simply outrageous.

“How sad does a man become when he has to downgrade others to make himself feel big and important. This man thrives on public approval and needs total control because he lives in personal fear. I quit Rising Force because of his intolerable and twisted ego.

“If your pride is bigger than your heart and your ego is bigger than your head, grow up or you will be alone for life. But after all, who can blame a child who shits his pants because he just doesn’t know any better.”

During an interview interview with Canada’s The Metal Voice , Turner talked about how their collaboration came about:

That, actually, was arranged through PolyGram Records. They wanted me to do for Yngwie what I had done for Rainbow. And I pretty much did that on the Odyssey record. It was still aggressive and brilliant music and very accessible, or commercial. We had a huge hit with “Heaven Tonight”, and it actually launched Yngwie’s career.

Turner continued:

There’s no one more self-absorbed than Yngwie Malmsteen — no one! So the whole statement is ridiculous. And you don’t strike out at these vocalists in that manner unless you are insecure about something.”

Former vocalist:

Tim “Ripper Owens

Pretty sure it’s because we all quit””

Yngwie’s manager just released the following statement:

Hello all,
“Firstly, we would like to apologize in advance that this statement must even be written, but it seems that some comments from past vocalists that Yngwie has worked with in the past have been getting twisted and blown out of proportion. Allow me to set the record straight.

“I think the response to Yngwie’s off-hand comments (of which his previous hired vocalists were not specifically named) has only served to prove them true – because Yngwie said something that they didn’t like, they came out enraged, spitting insults and profanities at him. This of course leads to the media bloating their responses and proclaiming it to be some sort of “feud” when it’s absolutely nothing of the sort.

“Yngwie never mentioned any of them by name (the journalist did, however) – he merely stated that he was not interested in working with any singers anymore because he did not feel it conducive to his style of writing and performing. If Yngwie had a problem with his hired musicians having an ego, he had every right to fire them (they did not “quit” or “leave” as they would like to have you believe) because it was, and still is his own project. He leads and he has the final word.

“It’s very unfortunate that these past hired vocalists must resort to mudslinging and insults to elicit any kind of media attention towards them. Such classless, puerile words are ungentlemanly at best and absolutely disgraceful at worst.
Meanwhile, these hired vocalists have been attempting to reach Yngwie throughout the past 35 years and to as recent as this year, have tried to reconnect with Yngwie, start projects and/or be rehired by him, among other things. At the same time, they have repeatedly spouted out these increasingly juvenile insults – a recent incident telling Yngwie to “sit on this” (a picture of the vocalist’s middle finger) on social media sticks out particularly – which makes it very hard to believe their reaching out is based in any sort of goodwill. These incidents tend to increase in frequency when their attempts are not humored.

“Above all, the most laughable thing about the statements from all of these different singers is that they all claim to be individually and solely responsible for Yngwie’s success! How strange and amazing is it that they all did it by themselves? It would be slightly more believable if they had the ability to generate media coverage without attaching Yngwie’s name to themselves – but alas, this is not the case, and as such their stories only seem to be about their tantrums toward Yngwie.
It is simply impossible, then, for one to take such statements seriously when these vocalists have sung such a different tune when dealing with our end. To literally take a picture of yourself flipping off Yngwie’s family and then right afterward show up at his concert asking for free tickets does not do a lot to instill trust. Such behavior simply comes across as being disingenuous and trying to ride on Yngwie’s coattails.

“I think that these past hired vocalists would find it in their best interests to do as Yngwie does by moving on and focusing on creating and performing new music, instead of grasping as tightly onto the past as they can.
Thank you for your time and I bid you a good day.”
~Daniel Baker, Malmsteen Management
