Miles Davis Playlist – ‘Birth Of The Cool’ Documentary w/ Trailer

Miles Davis (Official):  To celebrate Stanley Nelson’s documentary Miles Davis – Birth Of The Cool, check out a comprehensive playlist with all of the amazing Miles music synched into the film. Over 6 hours of music! #MilesDavisMovie

PLAYLIST

Miles Davis: Horn player, bandleader, innovator. Elegant, intellectual, vain. Callous, conflicted, controversial. Magnificent, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart.

The central theme of Miles Davis’s life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star—it also made him incredibly difficult to live with, for the people who loved him most. Again and again, in music and in life, Miles broke with convention—and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention, he changed it again. Miles’s bold disregard for tradition, his clarity of vision, his relentless drive, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music—from bebop to “cool jazz,” modern quintets, orchestral music, jazz fusion, rock ‘n’ roll, and even hip-hop.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, studio outtakes, and rare photos, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool tells the story of a truly singular talent and unpacks the man behind the horn.

Directed by Emmy Award-winner Stanley Nelson (Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, Freedom Riders for American Experience), Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool is a co-production of Eagle Rock Entertainment, Firelight Films, and American Masters Pictures.

Great night last night – Caught the NYC premier of the new #MilesDavis doc and was totally knocked out. Even those not “into jazz” or whatever should see it, as it’s a brilliant film that really takes you back to key periods of the 20th Century, of which Miles completely changed music in over many decades. He also had a big influence on artists such as Prince, Hendrix and Carlos Santana (one of the main participants in the film, along w Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Cobb & other artists, including the guys I’m with and was honored to hang with & sit next to: Vince Wilburn Jr – one of the film’s producers, fine drummer & nephew of the man himself, and Lenny White, drummer of Miles and later, a little band called #returntoforever). This won’t reach the small screen/streaming etc till next year, so it’s recommended you catch in a theater, where limited runs take place through 2019 (see @milesdavismovie for info). Seeing it in NYC, where so much of the action takes place, was extra special & it’s at @filmforumnyc for the next couple weeks. 1) W Vince & Lenny 2) My dude Will Calhoun, drummer of @livingcolourofficial 4) Post q&a with the guys and director Stanley Nelson. NYC Record vendors – I’ll be going on a massive binge snatching up classic Miles LPs on vinyl that I don’t have yet very soon….you’ve been warned ?

Musician Kevin Mahogany Dies at Age 59 – Jazz Vocalist, Kansas City

American jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany died at age 59.  At this time, a cause of death has not been reported.

At 11:30AM, the American Jazz Museum issued this tweet: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend Kevin Mahogany. His broad baritone has been an essential piece of the jazz landscape in Kansas City and all across the world.”

__________________________

Alex Skolnick: “Sad news. I once went to hear him as a fan of his guitarist, Dave Stryker (who’s awesome) & was unfamiliar up ‘til then. Was completely knocked out by that voice. RIP”
__________________________

Mahogany rose to success in the ’90s and released over a dozen albums, including recordings under the Warner Bros. and Telarc imprints.

Mahogany played the piano, clarinet and baritone saxophone before he started singing in high school. He played saxophone on his first professional gig with Eddie Baker’s New Breed Orchestra. Mahogany studied with local jazz legend Ahmad Aladeen at the Charlie Parker Academy, and matriculated at Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, where he formed a jazz vocal choir and earned a BFA in Music, English and Drama in 1981. He returned home and joined a nine-piece horn band called Robinson-Pike. He later formed two R&B-centric bands; The Apollos and Mahogany. In1991, he toured with the NRE Trio, and was featured on pianist Frank Mantooth’s 1993 CD, Dangerous Precedent.

That same year, Mahogany released his debut recording, Double Rainbow, was released on the Enja label in 1993. Specializing in performing and seldom-heard songs, the stylistic range of Mahogany’s recordings range from the kinetic big band bravura of Pussy Cat Dues: The Music of Charles Mingus; which featured Mingus sidemen trombonist Jimmy Knepper, alto saxophonist Charles MacPherson with the WDR Big Band, to Pride and Joy, his ebullient Motown tribute featuring the music of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

In addition to being a trend-setting leader of the first order, Mahogany has also been an in-demand sideman and guest artist with a select cadre of jazz stars. He’s recorded with T.S. Monk (Monk on Monk), The Ray Brown Trio (Christmas Songs With Ray Brown), Marlena Shaw (Dangerous), Roseanna Vitro (Passion Dance), Carl Allen (Testimonial), Barbara Morrison (Visit Me) and Elvin Jones (It Don’t Mean A Thing).

Mahogany is also an exceptional master teacher, as evidenced by his well-received work teaching at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the University of Miami. He received an Honorary Degree from his alma mater, Baker University, in 2001.

In 1996, Mahogany made his screen debut in the 1996 Robert Altman film Kansas City, portraying a character based on blues singer Big Joe Turner, and was also featured on soundtrack.

Black Friday: Sonny Rollins On Impulse! Record Store Day 2017

Reissue of the saxophone colossus’ debut on Impulse! Records, featuring pianist Ray Bryant (whose “graceful, complex solos deserve considerable praise and attention” says Harvey Pekar in JazzTimes), bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker. Pressed on 180g black vinyl at United Pressing, and mastered from the original tapes recorded at Rudy Van Gelder studio, On Impulse! is being faithfully reissued with all the original artwork and liner note content, including an essay by legendary jazz writer Nat Hentoff.

Record Store Day Black Friday 2017 List

Thom Jurek writes in AllMusic.com review that the album “feels as if it were a recording Rollins had to get out of his system. But thank goodness for us because it’s a winner through and through.” This album is also significant in that marks the only time Rollins and the soulful pianist Ray Byrant recorded together. Here the sparks fly on these five tasty jazz standards.

1 On Green Dolphin Street
2 Everything Happens To Me
3 Hole ’Em Joe
4 Blue Room
5 Three Little Words
