On the latest episode of Dean Delray’s Let There Be Talk podcast, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted finally lays out what really drove him to walk away from the band back in 2001. For years, the public story has centered on his side project Echobrain, and the tension it created within Metallica, but Newsted explains that the true breaking point was his own spiraling addiction and his plea for time off to get help. An excerpt from the interview has been transcribed (via full in bloom) below.

Newsted said:
“The Echobrain thing, that was another project that I took to a certain level. I had had 40 projects for the Chophouse to a level of recording, composition, rehearsal, that kind of thing. This one was just more promising, and I took it to a different place. But it’s not the reason I left Metallica. The reason I left Metallica is because I was a horrible addict. I was way up against myself, and if I didn’t get some kind of help, I was going to die. And so, I just said, ‘You guys, can I have a minute? Please give me a minute.’ And they said no. And I said, ‘I would rather live than be in your band.’ I love being in your band. I think it’s kind of obvious. I wear your shirt every fucking night. I wear our shirt every night. I fly my colors every night. I meet every fucking person that wants to meet and represent us for all the fans every fucking night. Don’t tell me I’m not committed. Don’t tell me I’m not loyal. I’m always the first one and last one out. It’s only proof. I’m not saying the words. It’s fucking history. It’s real. You can’t give me that minute to get my head straight again? Then I have to go. Not that I don’t love you, and certainly not that I’m not committed to this band, but it wasn’t because of Echobrain.”

Later in the conversation, Newsted lights up as he remembers the raw chaos of Metallica’s …And Justice for All shows, especially what it felt like on the floor once the band left the stage. He paints a vivid picture of a time when there were no phones in the air, just a brutally real connection between band and crowd.

“What was so beautiful is they were making the pure connection. There weren’t phones in between you and me and all that stuff. Peace to everybody, I’m not bitching about any of that stuff, I’m just saying that there was this visceral connection. There was that connection how it’s supposed to be. The pits were pits like they’re supposed to be fucking pits. Not pretending to….no, bro. No. When the show was done, I would always do this. After everybody’s out of the show, I’d walk out into the arena, the boys are breaking everything down, right? And I just fucking soak up the energy because it’s still there. It’s there, its frequencies, it’s fucking there, and it’s undeniable. You cut it with a chainsaw, man. It’s just fg oh, right? And I look at homie over here, the guys, they got that fg wide‑ass broom, right? And they’re sweeping up the concrete where the GA (General Admission) was, yeah? So homie’s over here on this side, there’s guys over here on this side, and they get all the stuff in a pile in the middle, right? Okay. A bunch of single shoes, a bunch of clumps of hair, and some teeth. So it’s like, dude, that’s what fucking’s supposed to happen. I’m not sure if it still does. I wouldn’t be aware of it anymore. I don’t know. But I do know that that happened, and I do know that I helped cause it, and I’m not sorry about it.”
