TOOL’s Maynard J. Keenan Pays Tribute to LOW’s Mimi Parker, “A huge influence on my writing approach w regards to pace, space, and harmony” – 2022

Maynard J. Keenan:

This is crushing news from Alan, LOW. Although I’ve never met them, Mimi and Alan have been a huge influence on my writing approach w regards to pace, space, and harmony. A few years ago, right after Bowie, Lemmy, and Alan Rickman died, I began writing letters, 12 at a time, to strangers who have had a huge influence on me. This was in reaction to the outpouring of love I was reading that these dead artists would never hear. I chose to write and send those words of appreciation, along w some wine and gifts to my guides while they could still read them.

Mimi and Alan were on that next round of 12 letters and had been for about 6 months. And I fucking waited too long. I was literally going to ask mgt to track down a good address for them this weekend. I had no idea she was sick. This puts an added sting to my procrastination. The song I was listening to on loop yesterday was Congregation.

My point I suppose is Do Not Wait. Life Is Too Short. Say the Words. Send the Letter. Make the Call. Also- Do yourself a favor and dig deep on the LOW catalog. Things We Lost in the Fire is a good place to start. Alan, Puscifer will be dedicating Horizons and A Singularity to Mimi the next few days while we play our way through Canada. So sorry for your loss.

TOOL’s Maynard Keenan Breaks on His Touring Life: “You wake up exhausted” – 2022 – Interview

Maynard J Keenan:

The Maynard James Keenan Interview

An excerpt from the interview can be found below.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT:

Life on the Road:

Maynard J Keenan:

You are only technically working two to three hours a night, but, for me, that’s not the case. I’m preparing my body for two days from now, based on what I’m eating, based on my sleep regimen, not going out, going out. You’ve got to remember, your average day on the road, you’re going to be waking up at 10 AM, kind of, because you’re traveling. I have to prepare.

Right away, I have to figure out what I’m having that morning to start my day. Is it going to be a walk? Is it going to be yoga? Is it going to be jujutsu? You have to prepare for soundcheck, and that tunes you to the room, tunes you to the space.

Then after that, again, some kind of training to prepare for that night. Again, if it’s a walk, yoga, jujutsu, if it’s muay Thai, something to prepare for that night.

Then I have to eat, either at 3 PM, or not until 11:30 PM. I can’t eat too close to the show because I’m carrying it around, and you risk reflux. Now you’ve compromised your voice for the next three shows. So, I have to eat early in the day. Knock that out, and then after the show (laughs)…you talk to any dieticians – you’re eating at 11:30 at night or midnight? What’s wrong with you? Now you are going to go to bed on a full stomach, which is terrible, but that’s when you get to eat. Otherwise, I’m not eating from 3 PM to 10 AM the next day. You have to time all that stuff, so you get it in.

Then you’re going to bed, usually on a bus. If you can imagine having a nice cozy bed, that’s not the bus. It’s not a cozy bed. But then having four weightlifters on each corner of the bed, shaking it while you’re trying to sleep. That’s bus life. You wake up exhausted. Did we go through a corn field last night? You just have to get an extra half-hour of quiet, solid sleep. On your days off, go to bed. That’s it, go to bed. Don’t do anything, maybe a little workout. Don’t eat anything heavy.

Guitar players/drummers, they don’t have to worry about these things.

No, because they don’t have this delicate set of vocal cords that can be damaged and then the show’s gone. But guitar players and drummers, if they mess around and break a finger because they’re being flippant, then, yeah, the show’s compromised. So, it’s similar, but it’s not as vulnerable as the vocal cords when it comes to diet and sleep because sleep is a huge piece of the puzzle.

TOOL’s Justin Chancellor: The Dunlop USA Cry Baby Wah Christmas Ad – VIDEO – Commercial – 2021

Jim Dunlop: Kick off your holidays with this feature from Justin Chancellor and director Jimmy Hayward, starring the Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah.

MORE INFO/PICS

The custom Cry Baby Wah combines three of Justin Chancellor’s favorite ways to explore tones and craft soundscapes—filter, wah, and fuzz.

THE LONG STORY
The Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah is a multi-tool of sonic craftsmanship, combining three separate effects into a single pedal: the fluid expressiveness of a custom midrange filter, the bright aggression of a custom wah circuit, and the chainsaw grind of a vintage fuzz. It’s the perfect complement to bass player Justin Chancellor’s multi-dimensional role in the band Tool. Whether opening up soundscapes with chords and harmonics or syncing up with guitarist Adam Jones to perform arresting single-note unison runs, Justin goes above and beyond the traditional boundaries of his instrument to help compose the band’s multi-layered tunes. He is, without a doubt, one of the modern pioneer users of effects on bass, and he keeps a carefully configured pedalboard at his disposal for crafting tones and exploring sounds. This custom Cry Baby Wah combines some of his favorite ways to do just that—filter, wah, and fuzz.

TWO DIFFERENT VOICES: U.K. FILTER AND CRY BABY WAH.
The Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah features U.K. Filter and Wah modes, two tone-warpingly distinct variations on a theme.

U.K. FILTER: THICK & THROATY.
The U.K. Filter mode uses a custom solid-state circuit designed to emulate the unique envelope-like filtering of the tone control on Justin’s own instrument—thick and throaty with very pronounced peaks. This mode absolutely nails his melodic, voice-like phrasing from the Tool track “The Patient.”

When combined with the built-in fuzz mode, the U.K. Filter generates incredibly smooth, synth-like tones.

WAH: BRILLIANT. AGGRESSIVE. LUSH.
If you prefer a more traditional wah sound, the Wah mode employs the classic red Fasel® Inductor and the circuitry of a modified Cry Baby Wah for a more aggressive sound and brilliantly lush harmonics.

Combined with the built-in fuzz circuit, the Wah mode cuts through with electric fire.

SHAPE YOUR VOICE. HOLD DOWN THE LOW END.
Customize each mode with separate Volume and Q controls, and move between the two at any time by stomping on the Wah Select footswitch. In both modes, this pedal’s custom circuitry maintains the thickness and heft of your low end by boosting your clean signal at 400Hz and blending it with the effect signal at the beginning of the rocker’s sweep.

VINTAGE FUZZ.
This pedal features Justin’s go-to fuzz, based on a ferocious device of vintage UK origin. It cuts through the mix with a tighter focus than most fuzzes of its type while retaining much of a bass signal’s thunderous heft. Think Justin’s monstrous tones on portions of the Tool track “Jambi.”

By default, you’ll only hear the fuzz when using the rocker pedal—it gives the U.K. Filter and Wah modes just the right amount of harmonic content to grab hold of for the crushing yet musical passages that Justin is known for.

Want to use the fuzz by itself? Just kick the switch on the side, and it’ll run independently

COMBINE U.K. FILTER OR WAH MODES WITH THE FUZZ, OR USE THEM SEPARATELY. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
Justin uses the U.K. Filter mode by itself, and he likes to combine the Wah mode with the fuzz—which he can engage with a single motion thanks to the optional Dunlop Pedal Topper, which provides a larger surface area for your foot to make contact with.

Emulate Justin’s tried and true formula for killer sounds, or experiment with all the different configurations available to unlock the hard-rocking and soundscaping potential of your own rig. In all scenarios, the Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah is a must for the tonecrafting bass player.

TOOL’s Maynard Keenan Opens Up About His Wife’s Battle w/ Breast Cancer – 2021

Maynard J Keenan: Today is my wife’s Birthday. #licoricelust I’m going to guess that it will be viewed as her favorite. In late Nov she felt a lump in her breast. On X-mas eve, she was diagnosed with cancer. She didn’t collapse into a pile of self pity. She didn’t launch into an entitlement rage.

She didn’t act out in any self-destructive manner. Instead she asked the right questions, listened to her doctors, made a plan, and stuck to it. And when there were things she couldn’t do on her own, she asked for help. Before the chemo could take her hair, she cut it all off and had our friend Brook make her a wig to match. And then she went to work. No one was the wiser. She’s successfully navigated both the chemo and the surgery, and now begins the radiation. And all without whining or bitching. She is my rock. She is my muse. She is my ALL.

Be like Jen. Happy Birthday, My Love. Cheers to this one and many more.
