Ronnie James Dio on the Reason Rob Halford Joined Black Sabbath in ’92 for Two Shows Opening for Ozzy: “Someone wanted to break this band up” – VIDEO – Rock History 101

Ronnie James Dio:

With Sabbath, we were offered to be the opening act for Ozzy (Osbourne), which were supposed to be his farewell shows. He was never going to tour again; he was never going to play again. Gee, what happened?

I didn’t want any part of that. I had stopped being in my own band in Dio. Tony (Iommi) had not had Tony Martin anymore, Cozy Powell. We now had Vinny (Appice), myself, Geezer (Butler), and Tony. We all gave things up to do what we thought was important, which was to make another Black Sabbath album with those people.

Then they felt it was more important to make whatever money that was offered to be the opening act for Ozzy. I totally disagreed. We started ourselves. All the tours we had done since ‘Dehumanizer’ were done with us and opening acts, and, to me, that’s the way it should’ve been. So, I refused to do it. They, in turn, brought in Rob Halford to do those last two shows. That showed me how important they thought I was as a person. But it didn’t matter what I thought. To me, it was wrong to do that.

I did not want to be part of the circus that was going to happen that night. And that circus was for them to not only be the act that went on before Ozzy, but then after Ozzy, for them to get together again with Bill Ward, Tony, Geezer, and Ozzy, which is what they did. They announced that they were going to have a reunion. Well, that would’ve meant that it wouldn’t be any band with me in it anyway, or Vinny. So, I guess I did the right thing.

And then not too long after that, Ozzy decided, “No, I don’t want to this.” Let’s face it, it all comes down to the fact that someone wanted to break this band up and they did a very good job of it. That’s what happened. It was all a bunch of political mumbo jumbo, things that shouldn’t have happened but they did.

Geezer Butler: “Remembering Geoff Nicholls…Integral Part of Sabbath Since 1980”

Geezer Butler: Remembering Geoff Nicholls, 5 years since he departed this world. Integral part of Sabbath since 1980.

From an Interview w/ Bass Magazine, Geezer said:

“On Heaven and Hell, all the tracks were recorded without my bass. I left the band [during the Heaven and Hell recording sessions] because I was having personal problems back in England. And so, once I sorted those problems out, I came back, but all the [other] tracks had been done.”

“The bass was [recorded] completely separate, so it had to sound different, because there was no bass while the guitars, vocals, and drums were [being] put down; whereas Mob Rules, it’s the whole band [playing] together.”

“Geoff came up with that (bass groove that anchors the verses in the song “Heaven and Hell.”) I thought that it suited it perfectly. So I kept those bits in, and just changed the choruses and the middle eight bits; but the actual, verse bass line, that was Geoff Nicholls who came up with that.”

Ex-Black Sabbath Singer Tony Martin “As The World Burns” NEW SONG/ALBUM ‘Thorns’ – 2022

Former Black Sabbath singer, Tony Martin, announces his upcoming solo album “THORNS”, to be released worldwide on January 14, 2022. The album is licensed in all of North and South America by Dark Star Records and will be available to all other countries via Battlegod Productions.

PRE-ORDER

Tony Martin:

This new album is probably the most “Tony Martin” a Tony Martin album has ever sounded!! It’s got several surprises that will lift people’s eyebrows I am sure. Largely, but not entirely based around the riffs of Scott McClellan, new to the world scene he has proved to be a worthy partner in crime for this release… I was able to make some great songs out of the riffs he was coming up with which is very similar in the writing sense to that which I experienced with Tony Iommi. Different sound and style but the riffing talent that someone like Scott has is very cool.

It is diverse, melodic, powerful, thought-provoking and of a standard high as ever I have worked on. I believe there are stories still to tell, songs still to be sung and with this album, I feel it’s achieved everything I could have wished for.

Grateful to the people who have given their extra talents in appearances on this recording, it’s been a challenge in COVID lockdown, getting everyone’s performances from across the world, but in another way, it was a perfect opportunity to get it done.”

Tony Martin, is an English heavy metal vocalist, best known for his time fronting Black Sabbath, initially from 1987 to 1991 and again from 1993 to 1996. Martin was the band’s second-longest-serving vocalist after Ozzy Osbourne. Eternal Idol and Headless Cross are among the best-known Black Sabbath albums featuring Tony Martin as well as Scream his solo album from 2005.

The new album will feature Danny Needham (Venom), Magnus Rosen (HammerFall), Scott McClellan (who helped co-write the album), and Greg Smith who performed with Alice Cooper, Rainbow, Blue Öyster Cult, and many more!

Jimmy Page: “My very dear friend Pete Makowski passed away yesterday” – 2021 – Tributes

Jimmy Page: My very dear friend Pete Makowski passed away yesterday.

We have known each other for years and he helped me in the early stages of research for my first website in 2010, where some of the material we sourced became the foundation for the popular On This Day series of posts. I have gratefully received such enthusiasm from you all over the years and Pete should also be praised for his enormous, upbeat and positive contribution to musical journalism.

I will miss Pete.

Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi Gets Signature Gibson SG Special Guitar Based on His 1964 SG

Tony Iommi’s iconic riffs, heavy tones, and massively influential albums created the blueprint for heavy metal and many other genres to follow. His career, like the man himself, is universally loved and revered. And while his innovative tuning and playing styles were a major part of his monstrous tones, a heavily modified 1964 Gibson SG was at the center of it all. Now Gibson USA has made a guitar based on the iconic original that launched countless heavy riffs, with a mahogany body, bound mahogany neck with a rounded profile, Indian rosewood fretboard with 22 frets, a Graph Tech® nut, Grover® Rotomatic® tuners with contemporary style buttons, and chrome-covered P-90 pickups. A reproduction of Tony’s “Monkey” sticker is included in the case. Left-handed and right-handed versions are available.

P-90 Single Coil Pickup
Legendary Tone

First introduced in the early 1950s, Gibson’s legendary P90 single-coil pickup produced a raw powerful tone that helped define the blues and rock and roll in their formative years. Today, the P90’s traditional combination of high output and brilliant tone is still considered a favorite among many top musicians. Known by such familiar nicknames as the “Soapbar” and the “Cobalt,” the P90 still cuts through any type of music, all while displaying amazing tonal sensitivity for everything from blues and rock to mellow jazz riffs. It’s perfect as a vintage replacement and features vintage, braided two-conductor wiring. It’s also fully wax potted to eliminate any chance of unwanted microphonic feedback.
