Lita Ford Talks ‘The Decade That Rocked,’ A New Book By Photographer Mark Weiss

Lita Ford talks about The Decade That Rocked, a new book by Mark Weiss! Watch the video below and check out the book right here.

The 1980s were an era of musical excess, filled with spandex, makeup, big hair, groupies, and loud, guitar-driven rock ’n’ roll. Photographer Mark Weiss lived at the heart of it all, documenting the biggest and most dangerous bands of the time—legends ranging from Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and KISS, as well as countless others whose sound and image defined the era. The Decade That Rocked showcases onstage and backstage moments and never-before-seen images from the period’s most historic concerts, tours, and multiplatinum album covers—all captured through the lens of Mark “Weissguy” Weiss.

Growing up in Matawan, New Jersey, Mark made a deal with a neighbor at thirteen years old to mow his lawn for the summer in exchange for a 35mm camera. He then filled his teenage nights sneaking into concerts to shoot the biggest acts of the ’70s. After being arrested for selling photographs outside a KISS concert in 1977, he walked into the offices of Circus with his portfolio and soon landed his first centerfold spread—a photo of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. Soon after, he became the publication’s staff photographer. In the years to come, Mark became a fan favorite and a star in his own right, with a Creem magazine reader’s poll ranking him as one of rock’s top photographers of the era. Throughout the ’80s, his photos were seen by millions, appearing in countless magazines around the world and on the covers of the most iconic albums of the decade. He traveled on tour buses alongside legends-in-the-making as they climbed their way to sold-out arenas and stadiums, living and breathing the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle with unparalleled access to capture it all on film.

Dig into Mark’s archives and take a tour through never-before-seen photos of a teenage Jon Bon Jovi during a performance with his New Jersey band the Rest, and behind-the-scenes and unreleased images from the album shoot for Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and the band’s decade-ending historic performance at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. Revisit the 1983 US Festival’s historic Heavy Metal Day. Go backstage with Black Sabbath at Live Aid and with Van Halen during their biggest tours. Travel to Washington, DC, as Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider sits before Congress to combat censorship at the infamous PMRC hearings.

Captured from the unique vantage point of a photographer who lived and breathed the ’80s in all its grit and glory, The Decade That Rocked brings to life the no-holds-barred sounds and sights that changed the world of hard rock and metal forever.

Paul McCartney on Photographer Robert Freeman’s Death, “I will miss this wonderful man” 2019

Paul McCartney:

Dear Robert Freeman has passed away. He was one of our favourite photographers during the Beatles years who came up with some of our most iconic album covers. Besides being a great professional he was imaginative and a true original thinker. People often think that the cover shot for Meet The Beatles of our foreheads in half shadow was a carefully arranged studio shot. In fact it was taken quite quickly by Robert in the corridor of a hotel we were staying in where natural light came from the windows at the end of the corridor. I think it took no more than half an hour to accomplish.

Bob also took the Rubber Soul cover; his normal practice was to use a slide projector and project the photos he’d taken onto a piece of white cardboard which was exactly album sized, thus giving us an accurate idea of how the finished product would look. During his viewing session the card which had been propped up on a small table fell backwards giving the photograph a ‘stretched’ look. Instead of simply putting the card upright again we became excited at the idea of this new version of his photograph. He assured us that it was possible to print it this way and because the album was titled Rubber Soul we felt that the image fitted perfectly.

I will miss this wonderful man but will always cherish the fond memories I have of him.

Thanks Bob.

Love Paul

Music Photographer Alex Ruffini Dies @ 50 – Tribute

Professional music photographer Alex Ruffini has died after losing his battle to pancreatic cancer.  He was 50 years old.

Several tributes have been embedded below.

VIEW ALEX RUFFINI PHOTOS

ABOUT:

Alex Ruffini was born in Venice in 1968.

In 1980, Kiss performed in Italy for the first time, and Alex was impressed by the mix of music, stage design and make-up, which nurtured an ultimate passion for rock and for the artists’ different personalities on stage.

During his teens, Alex had no real master: he drew inspiration from photographers like Fin Costello, Neil Zlozower , Mark Weiss, and Ross Halfin. This helped him to open his eyes and mind, which allowed him to absorb the inspiring techniques of these artists. This inspiration led him into the darkroom, where he acquired his special skill in black-and-white processing.

While he divided his time between his job and his main passion, he never missed a chance to snapshot his favorite artists, initiating a free-lance career which was soon acknowledged by international magazines, such as Guitar Player (USA), Muen Magazine (USA), Scandinavian Tattoo (SWE), Sandman (UK), Tattoo Energy (UK and Italy), Freewey Magazine (IT), and Power Play (UK).

Ruffini’s talent was also appreciated by musicians themselves, including Dokken, Eric Sardinas, Bonfire, Antiproduct, House Of Shakira, L.A. Guns, Duff McKagan and Loaded, Hardcore Superstar, Jake E. Lee, Paul DiAnno, Richie Kotzen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Stevie Salas among many others.

In 2007, his shots appeared in renowned trademarks’ catalogs, such as Ibanez, Esp, Gibson, Yamaha, Music Man, Vox, Crafter, Framus and Dv Mark.

One of Ruffini’s peculiarities was his ability to work without a fixed set, improvising each time and therefore creating ever different and original situations.
