Barrett Martin to Teach Class @ Antioch University in Seattle – Mad Season/Screaming Trees Drummer

Grammy-winning producer, drummer/percussionist, composer, writer, and Zen artist Barrett Martin (Mad Season, Screaming Trees) will once again teach a music class at Antioch University in Seattle. For the past 7 years Martin has taught one class a year, usually during the winter while he was in Seattle writing and producing new music. This year’s class will be titled after his latest book, The Singing Earth, and will focus on music, ecology, and awakening the mind to activism.

Martin commented, “I want to enlighten the minds of students, and put a fire in their heart to go out and make a difference in the world for the better. Whatever their skill is, whatever their talent is, whatever they feel passionate about, that’s their way of working in the world. All I want to do is just ignite that, and enlighten it a little bit more, so that whatever they decide to do, I’ve contributed a little bit to that fire.”

Martin holds a master’s degree in ethnology/linguistics/ethnomusicology from the University of New Mexico and has previously taught at many universities as a guest lecturer.

Mad Season/Screaming Trees Drummer Barrett Martin 1st Edition Signed Copies of New Book ‘The Singing Earth’

Drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Skin Yard, Mad Season) has 1st edition signed copies of his new book, The Singing Earth, available at this location. The book also comes with a 26-song CD soundtrack, which includes his 5 solo albums. The 2nd edition won’t arrive until February 2018.

ABOUT:
THE SINGING EARTH is a collection of musical adventure stories from musician and writer Barrett Martin. The book chronicles his musical work in 14 musical regions across 6 continents over the course of 30 years. It starts with his involvement in the 1990’s Seattle music scene, and then it explores song lines and sea trails in Australia and New Zealand; trance drumming in Central America; Griot music in West Africa; musical diplomacy in Cuba; touring with a Brazilian rock band; recording shamanic music in the Peruvian Amazon; playing the blues in the Mississippi Delta; recording in the Palestinian West Bank; the power of resistance in American music; and the influence of Asia in music and culture. There is also a companion soundtrack that comes with the book as a digital download, which contains 44 songs from Martin’s various bands, as well as field recordings and natural soundscapes from the incredible musical environments he has visited. Those who read and listen to the musical journey that Martin describes will find themselves transported through exotic global landscapes where they learn about the connections between ecology, community, and the music that connects us to our greater humanity.
