In this episode of Seymour’s Studio, Kevin runs through the unique qualities of Filter’Trons, and dives into the two new Filter’Tron-style pickups from Seymour Duncan – the Psyclone Vintage and Psyclone Hot sets!
Psyclone Vintage Set:
The Psyclone Vintage set recreates the distinctive sound of the original Filter’Tron pickups of the fifties and sixties. Due to tighter pole spacing, low DCR, and strong magnetism, the tone falls somewhere between a PAF style humbucker and a single-coil – warm, clear, snappy, and sweet, making it the perfect complement for country, jazz, and classic rock. The neck pickup is designed to perfectly recreate the original Filter’Tron pickup spec from the fifties, while the bridge pickup is calibrated with a slightly hotter wind to balance output levels and create a fuller tone. The Psyclone Vintage pickup set is a drop-in replacement for any guitar routed for Filter’Tron style pickups and includes the correct hardware for either direct mount or pickup-ring mounting options.
Psyclone Hot Set:
Psyclone Hot set takes the distinctive sound of the original Filter’Tron pickups and supercharges it. Punchy mid-range, tight low-end, and smooth treble combine with the higher output to deliver a pickup perfect for rock, new wave, punk, and psychobilly. The neck pickup features a lower output wind that retains clarity and balances the output, while the bridge pickup is hotter and punchier.

Seymour Duncan recently collaborated with guitarist Joe Bonamassa to create the Joe Bonamassa Amos Pickup Set, replicating the pickups in Bonamassa’s legendary 1958 Gibson Flying V. Careful examination of the original pickups revealed something unique – unusually strong magnetism, which could only be replicated by using Alnico 6 magnets. Although Alnico 6 might seem like an odd choice for a PAF replica, the result is surprisingly warm, clear and powerful – and matches the tone of the originals.
About the pickups, Bonamassa says: “Truth be told, I think it’s the best of the three replica pickup sets I’ve collaborated on with Duncan.”
Each set is built using period-correct butyrate bobbins, maple spacers, and wound on the same historic Leesona winding machine originally used by Gibson in the fifties and sixties, and will be hand-signed by Seymour W. Duncan and Joe Bonamassa.
Seymour Duncan, a leading manufacturer of pickups and pedals, announces the release of Periphery guitarist Mark Holcomb’s Alpha and Omega pickups in 6, 7 and 8-string versions.
“The Alpha/Omega set has been the heartbeat of my sound for the past several years,” Mark Holcomb says. “Since we developed and released the first 6-string set in the custom shop, I’ve had the same pickup set in every one of my 6, 7 and 8-string guitars, live and in the studio. It has remained one of the few components of my rig and setup that I haven’t even thought about tweaking.
“The Omega bridge pickup came out super cool,” Holcomb continues. “It’s very, very aggressive and snarling, with that percussive quality that I like in the low mids. My style is based on really big chords with a lot of voicings, and I didn’t want to sacrifice any of that in the bridge pickup. And the Alpha neck pickup has lots of pick attack – probably the most pick attack of any neck pickup I’ve ever played. But it’s still very fat and glassy.
“The 6-string Custom Shop release of this pickup was very popular and we heard a lot from Mark and Mark’s fans who said they wanted extended range versions of that same pickup and the ability to buy it over the counter,” says Seymour Duncan SVP of Products & CRO Max Gutnik. “We’re excited to make them available to more players, with more variety.”
