Eddie Van Halen’s Gibson SG Used on “Dirty Movies” from ‘Fair Warning’ – 2022 – COOL AS CHIT HISTORY

Wolfgang Van Halen:

Pop played this SG on the slide part in Dirty Movies on Fair Warning. He loved the tone, but the lower horn of the guitar kept getting in the way… so he sawed it off.

…and you’ll hear it on the next Mammoth album 😊

Eddie Van Halen:

“Fair Warning is kind of a dark album. We started doing things my way, and we all kind of butted heads – me versus them. I remember sneaking down in the studio around four o’clock in the morning with Donn (Landee) and re-recording things the way I wanted them to be.

“The next day, they walked in and said, ‘Hey, that’s great! When did you do that?’ It was kind of a cheap thing to do, but I had to do something to get what I wanted.”

Michael Anthony on the ‘Fair Warning’ era:

There were times where Ed would spend a lot of time in the studio, him and Donn Landee. Sometimes they would even pull all-nighters or stay up for like two to three days. The thing that was starting to grow between us and Roth would eventually come to a head during the 1984 tour. That, plus the fact that Ted Templeman wanting to remake some songs and Ed wanting to do his own thing.

On Valerie Bertinelli:

You could always feel the tension in the room when those two (Roth & Bertinelli) were talking to each other. I mean, they got along, you could tell, and I know Dave was doing it for Ed’s sake. He didn’t want any tension within the band, but you could tell that something wasn’t right there.

Plus, Valerie, she’s very opinionated and very strong-willed. If she didn’t think something was right, like if Dave was wearing something, she’d go, “Yeah, I don’t think that looks right; you ought to tell Dave.”

Up to that point, we had been pretty passive with Dave as far as a lot of things concerning the band; the interviews and stuff like that. All of a sudden, Ed was going like, “Hey, Dave I don’t think…” blah, blah, blah. Dave knew that Valerie was a part of that, and I think that made the tension even worse.

Epiphone Joe Bonamassa 1962 ES-335 Guitar Announced – 2022

Epiphone is proud to partner with Joe Bonamassa on a very special guitar based on his 1962 Gibson ES-335 featured on his first solo album.

An Old Friend Comes Home

Some guitars are more special than others, even when that guitar is owned by a world-famous guitarist and guitar collector like Joe Bonamassa. In 1996, he purchased a red 1962 Gibson ES-335 and used it on his first solo album, A New Day Yesterday. In 2001, he regrettably sold the guitar to help fund his move from New York to LA.

As the 20th anniversary of Joe’s first record approached, a strange twist of fate and an unexpected phone call resulted in Joe being reunited with his old friend, the red ES-335 that propelled him through his first solo effort and launched him into a new life on the West Coast. Feeling fortunate to get his old guitar back, Joe promised that this important instrument would stay with him for the rest of his days.

The Epiphone Joe Bonamassa 1962 ES-335 is a tribute to a legendary guitarist and one of his cherished instruments. It features a one-piece mahogany neck with an Indian laurel fretboard and a comfortable Rounded C profile, Gibson BurstBucker™ 2 and 3 pickups wired to CTS® potentiometers and Mallory™ capacitors, a Switchcraft™ pickup selector toggle switch and output jack, and a Maestro™ Vibrola™.

A custom hardshell case with Epiphone and Joe Bonamassa graphics and a certificate of authenticity are also included.

Twisted Sister’s Jay Jay French on the Pointy/Strat-Style Guitars of the ’80s: “Gibson should be kissing Slash’s ass for saving the Les Paul!”

Jay Jay French:

When Love is for Suckers came out, I had Kramer do a Love is for Suckers cover guitar. The irony of it is, if you look at the amount of time I spent playing all these guitars, the Love is for Suckers guitar probably got the least amount of time because the tour was aborted after two weeks and then it went into storage.

I’m not a Strat guy, I’m a Gibson guy. But back in the late ’80s, everything was pointy guitars or Strat-style guitars. There was a point where Gibson was out of favor and people don’t remember this. Gibson should be kissing Slash’s ass for saving the Les Paul!

In 1987, while promoting the album ‘Love is for Suckers,’ Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider said the following about the band’s dwindling audience:

Dee Snider:

I gave up trying to figure out records a long time ago. If you go back to our early albums, our first one, ‘Under the Blade,’ was considered to be a classic record, yet it had no major sales anywhere. ‘You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll’ was a smash in England, but nowhere else in the world. ‘Stay Hungry’ bombed in England, huge in the United States. ‘Come Out and Play,’ our biggest album in Italy and Norway but no good in the United States.

So, every country I go to, I’ve got different results. We just make the records we feel good about.

Upon its release, Billboard wrote: “Longtime New York-based rockers stumbled with last release but have managed to catch their balance on this one, with a new producer and new attitude. Album is chock-full of sturdy, straightforward cuts.”

Sharon Liveten of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “On its fifth album, Twisted Sister doesn’t tromp off into uncharted territory. It’s anthemic, occasionally repetitive and self-derivative. That said, Love Is for Suckers is a darned good album. The guitar work is flashy but doesn’t resort to clichéd posturing and Dee Snider’s vocals are in fine, sneering form.”

Pete Bishop of the Pittsburgh Press commented: “This is cliche-cluttered, “commercial” heavy metal designed for instant acceptance. Seven of the cuts are the same wham-bam-party-hearty stuff Twisted Sister and so many others have defrosted and reheated ad nauseam.” He selected “Hot Love”, “One Bad Habit” and “You Are All That I Need” as “the class of the disc because they dare to differ from the formula and because Twisted Sister performs them well.”

Michael Dowding of The Boston Globe wrote: “Unfortunately, this album sounds like a band in decline. There’s still enough thump and screech to keep the Saturday night party going, but don’t look for any development or innovation. For fans, the best cuts include “Wake Up” and “One Bad Habit”. For many other listeners, though, this is an album to avoid.”

Players can also challenge themselves by speeding up or slowing the tabs. Like having a full-time guitar teacher, the Gibson App keeps track of all your progress and adjusts lesson plans accordingly. The Gibson App released a “backing track mode” which supports both lesson and song playback without headphones, so users can self-select what works best for their current environment. And that’s not all: the Gibson App also packs in a fully-featured digital tuner for guitar first-timers, there’s even a detailed lesson on how to tune your instrument, a multi-function metronome, players can connect to free one-on-one consultations with Gibson’s Virtual Guitar Tech team, and to direct links to the Gibson, Epiphone, and Kramer, online stores for easy shopping for guitars, gear, apparel, and accessories.

The Gibson App is more than a pocket-sized guitar teacher, it’s loaded with an archive of exclusive content and original programming from its premium and accessible award-winning online network, Gibson TV, featuring music icons telling their best guitar stories, with more episodes and installments added regularly. Users can watch Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi share insights and tales from his decades-long career on the series “Icons,” dive into Joe Bonamassa’s assortment of legendary Les Paul guitars on “The Collection,” or see how Gibson’s iconic instruments are made in their Nashville factory from body to binding on “The Process.” There’s even a series called “The Scene” that focuses on backstage stories from hallowed music venues from coast-to-coast like The Troubadour and Grand Ole Opry.

Gibson: Injunction Permanently Prohibits Dean Guitars from Using Iconic Guitar Shapes – 2022

Gibson Wins Another Definitive Ruling On Its Iconic Shapes and Trademarks

Court Orders Injunction Permanently Prohibiting Armadillo (Dean Guitars) From Using Gibson’s ES, SG, Flying V, and Explorer Trademarks and Hummingbird Wordmark

Court Puts Gibson In A Position To Own Their Legacy Innovations And Be Future Focused

On May 27, 2022, the court decided by jury, to uphold Gibson’s long-established and well-recognized trademarks for Gibson’s innovative and iconic guitar shapes, finding that the Gibson Trademarks are valid, the Gibson shapes are not generic, and the defendants were guilty of both infringement and counterfeiting. This sets a clear precedent for the future of Gibson’s intellectual property.

On July 28, the court issued an injunction permanently enjoining Armadillo (known as Dean Guitars) from the manufacture, advertisement, and/or sale of its guitars that infringe on Gibson’s ES, SG, Flying V, and Explorer trademarks, and the Hummingbird wordmark.

Gibson is once again very pleased with the outcome after years of simply trying to protect their brand and business through well recognized intellectual property rights, rights that have been Gibson’s for decades.

Gibson’s guitar shapes are iconic and now are firmly protected for the past, present, and future. From a broader perspective, this court decision is also a win for Gibson Fans, Artists, Dealers, and related Partners. Not to mention for all of the iconic American brands that have invested in meaningful innovation and continued protection, only to see it diluted with unauthorized and often illegitimate knockoffs. Gibson can now focus attention on continuing to leverage its iconic past, and invest in future innovation, with confidence.
