Mercyful Fate – “In the Shadows” Turns 33

Thirty-three years ago, on June 22nd, 1993, Danish metal legends MERCYFUL FATE released their third full-length album “In the Shadows” via Metal Blade Records. Arriving nearly a decade after their early‑’80s masterpieces and the band’s breakup, it was much more than “just” a new record. It was the moment King Diamond and Hank Shermann finally brought Mercyful Fate back from the dead and picked up the story where “Melissa” and “Don’t Break the Oath” left off.

“In the Shadows” finds the reunited lineup staying true to the classic Mercyful Fate formula, wrapped in a cleaner early‑’90s production that lets every eerie detail breathe. King’s signature vocals and theatrical phrasing sit on top of riffs that feel both familiar and refreshed, proving this wasn’t a nostalgia trip but a genuine continuation of what the band started in the underground days.

From the haunting melodies to the dynamic arrangements, the album showed a more mature Mercyful Fate that could evolve without losing its soul, reminding old fans why the name meant so much while pulling new listeners into their dark universe.
