Apple to Debut iPad 3 March 7th?

Apple Inc. has scheduled a special event for March 7th, at which analysts are speculating the tech giant will unveil its long-anticipated iPad3 tablet computer. The Cupertino, California-based company sent out email invitations to press on Tuesday, welcoming them to attend the event in San Fransico. The invitation included an image of someone using an iPad with the following message: “We have something you really have to see. And touch.”

Since the invitations went out, the company has declined to answer questions about the event. Shares of the company surged more than 1.7 percent on the speculation that a new iPad is coming, hitting a new all-time high yet again. If the event is highlighted by a new iPad, it will be nearly one year since the unveiling of the iPad2. Apple has been typically tight-lipped about what changes might come with the new iPad, repeatedly avoiding questions about the abundant speculation in techie circles.

Apple’s iPad has enjoyed dominant market share in the emerging tablet computer space, as devices launched by competitors such as Samsung and Motorola have been mostly disappointing. In the fourth quarter alone, Apple sold a record 15.4 million iPads, an increase of more than 100 percent from its iPad sales in the final three months of 2011. Those sales helped the company record its highest quarterly profit ever as it earned $13.1 billion on revenue of $46.3 billion, also a record.
