The Kinks’ Dave Davies: “I dreamt about Jeff Beck last night” – 2023

Dave Davies:

I dreamt about Jeff Beck last night. We were talking about business stuff. I dreamt about him right after he passed away and kept seeing him in crowds, but the person would turn around and it would be someone else. Airy fairy stuff but I believe in fairies. Rest in peace, Jeff.

Ritchie Blackmore on Jeff Beck: “He could reach up into the stars and make magic” – 2023

Ritchie Blackmore:

First met Jeff Beck around 64-65 and it was a session where we were both playing guitars and Jimmy Page was producing. I couldn’t believe how incredible he was, not only with his technique but his sound too. I became a fan of his ever since. He could reach up into the stars and make magic with his playing. His choice of notes were always absolutely perfect. This whole thing is a shock. We shall always remember Jeff as the best rock and roll player.

Jimmy Page Pays Tribute to Jeff Beck: “Jeff could channel music from the ethereal” – 2023

Jimmy Page:

The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans.

Paul McCartney: “Jeff Beck has left the building and it is a lonelier place without him” – 2023

Paul McCartney:

I was so saddened to hear that Jeff Beck had died. Jeff Beck was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour who played some of the best guitar music ever to come out of Great Britain. He was a superb technician and could strip down his guitar and put it back together again in time for the show.

His unique style of playing was something that no one could match, and I will always remember the great times we had together. He would come over to dinner at our place or he and his wife, Sandra, would host an evening at their house.

Jeff had immaculate taste in most things and was an expert at rebuilding his collection of cars. His no nonsense attitude to the music business was always so refreshing and I will cherish forever the moments we spent together.

Jeff Beck has left the building and it is a lonelier place without him.
God bless Jeff and his family.

Robert Plant Pays Tribute to Jeff Beck: “He cooked up magic through all the passing eras” – 2023

Robert Plant: This is tragic news..

Hard to take in..
Jeff always appeared timeless, ever evolving ..
He embraced project after project with limitless energy and enthusiasm..
He surfaced in an extraordinary time..he took his place side by side with the virtuosos of the period .. his mates ..
The scene was on fire, he introduced a cool template moving from Yardbird to Bolero to Truth, Beck Ola with Rod the perfect foil…the singer and guitarist syndrome..plenty of sparks…great results…
He cooked up magic through all the passing eras, always up for the next, unknown, unlikely collision, back in time to homage Cliff Gallup, forward to Johnny Depp.
His gift was enormous. He was funny, challenging and eager
My feelings are with Sandra today..

Rod Stewart Pays Tribute to Jeff Beck: “You were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything. RIP” – Guitarist Dies @ 78 – 2023

Rod Stewart:

Jeff Beck was on another planet. He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since. He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything. RIP

Ritchie Blackmore on Jeff Beck & Jimi Hendrix: “I always thought of Jimi Hendrix as ‘the wild man of Borneo,’ and there he is, fixing his hair in the mirror”

full in bloom: In April, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was a guest DJ on SiriusXM’s Guitar Greats.

Ritchie Blackmore on Jimi Hendrix via SiriuxXM’s Guitar Greats:

Ritchie Blackmore:

When Jimi Hendrix came to England, Jeff Beck came up to me and said, ‘Ritchie, we’ve got to do something about this guy,’ and I said, ‘Who are you talking about?’ He said: ‘Jimi Hendrix. He’s killing everybody over here. He’s upsetting everybody.’ I’m like, ‘Well Jeff, if you can’t do it, nobody else is going to do it’ because I always thought of Jeff as being the best rock player.

I followed Hendrix because I thought the way he used riffs in a riff, it had magical moments. Brilliant guitar player and he also looked like he was from the moon. Really, in a way, he didn’t have to play the guitar because he looked so strange and different to the typical English musician, and it worked. Unfortunately, it only worked for three years, but he certainly set the world alight.

I only met him once. It was in the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, and I was going into the toilet and he was playing with his hair or something. I always thought of Jimi Hendrix as ‘the wild man of Borneo,’ and there he is, fixing his hair in the mirror. That was the only time I met him and we kind of nodded to each other and that was it. So I never really got to know him, yet he certainly set the world on fire.

Jeff Beck on Jimi Hendrix via Classic Rock:

Jeff Beck:

When I saw Jimi we knew he was going to be trouble. And by ‘we’ I mean me and Eric [Clapton], because Jimmy [Page] wasn’t in the frame at that point. I saw him at one of his earliest performances in Britain, and it was quite devastating. He did all the dirty tricks – setting fire to his guitar, doing swoops up and down his neck, all the great showmanship to put the final nail in our coffin. I had the same temperament as Hendrix in terms of ‘I’ll kill you’, but he did in such a good package with beautiful songs.

Reporters got the number of my flat the day he died. I was suicidal at the time, because my girlfriend had dumped me. And to have to the deal with a call saying “Jimi Hendrix is dead. How do you feel about that?” At first I thought it was a bloody hoax, but as the day wore on I realized it was tragically true.

Bass Legend Tim Bogert Dies @ 76

Carmine Appice: My true friend Tim Bogert died today. He was like a brother to me. He was my friend for over 50 years.

Tim was a one of a kind bass player. He inspired many, many bass players worldwide. He was as masterful at shredding as he was holding down a groove, and Tim introduced a new level of virtuosity into rock bass playing. No one played like Tim. He created bass solos that drove audiences to a frenzy every time he played one. And he played a different solo every night. He was the last of the legendary 60’s bass players.

Tim was a very intelligent person. So intelligent that we would call him “Spock”. You could ask him anything and he would know something about it.

I loved Tim like a brother. He will be missed very much in my life. I will miss calling him, cracking jokes together, talking music and remembering the great times we had together, and how we created kick-ass music together.

Perhaps the only good thing about knowing someone close to you is suffering a serious illness, is you have an opportunity to tell them that you love them, and why you love them. I did that, a lot. I was touched to hear it said back to me. Nothing was left unsaid between us and I’m grateful for that. I highly recommend it.

Rest in peace, my partner. I love you. See you on the other side.
