Ricky Gervais on the Will Smith/Chris Rock Slap & Jada Pinkett: “I would’ve told a joke about her boyfriend” – 2022 – VIDEO

Ricky Gervais:

I don’t want to talk about it too much because I don’t know what’s going on in his (Will Smith’s) life. I don’t know why he did it. No one knows why he did it. He’s got issues. Obviously, it was double shocking that it happened at the Oscars with everyone in tuxedos. Of course, you see that kind of thing in bars on a Saturday night, but not the most privileged people on the planet slapping each other. I blocked someone the other day for saying, “No, words are violent, too.” No, they’re not. No. Violence is violence. Words aren’t violent. Anyone who tries to say that any freedom of speech justifies violence, that’s what fucking leads to terrorism. Honestly, don’t get me started on that shit. But the main thing about it was, Chris Rock weighs about 140 lbs. He’s the most gentle man. I tried not to talk about it. I had a warm-up gig the next night, and you can’t go out there and not address it when it’s a big thing like that because people are going, “What’s he going to say about it?” So, I just went out and straight away said, “I’ve got no Will Smith material,” and they laughed at that recognition. And I said, “I trended on Twitter.” I trended; I wasn’t even there. Because people were saying, “What would Ricky Gervais have said? What would’ve happened to Ricky Gervais?” Well, nothing, and I said this live, “Nothing would’ve happened to me because I wouldn’t have told a joke about his wife’s hair. I would’ve told a joke about her boyfriend.” But you don’t hit someone over a joke, however bad it is, and it wasn’t bad. That was like the tamest joke I would’ve ever told. Jesus. Someone said it was joking about her disability (laughs). Well, I’m going a bit thin, so I’m disabled. That means I can park right up next to Tesco’s now. And I’m fat, that’s a disease. I’m fat and balding (laughs). I should get benefits.

Ex-Anthrax Guitarist Dan Spitz Asked to Become Academy Member of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve – 2022 – Watchmaker Grammys/Oscars

Dan Spitz: Proud to announce that I was asked to become an Academy member of the “Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve.” … Representing the USA. This is the equivalent of the Grammy’s for Watchmaking. Please read more about the GPHG @ gphg.org

The main purpose of the Foundation of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) is to highlight and yearly reward the most remarkable contemporary creations and promote the watchmaking art worldwide.

The GPHG notably plays this unifying promotional role by staging an annual competition involving several hundreds of watches marketed during the year and attributing the highest awards in this domain. In doing so, it contributes to enhancing the traditions, skills and values of Swiss – and indeed universal – watchmaking culture.

The GPHG awards ceremony held in November of each year draws elite representatives of the international watchmaking profession, united in honoring the finest creations and stakeholders who daily breathe vitality and creativity into the watchmaking world. Twenty or so prizes, including the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix (Best in Show) distinction are awarded on this occasion.

Each autumn, in the run-up to the annual awards ceremony, the GPHG organizes a traveling exhibition stopping off in the world’s major cities presenting the nominated watches. Each of these exhibitions enables a cosmopolitan public to discover and admire the most beautiful timepieces of the year, exceptionally brought together in various key locations. The winning watches are also exhibited after the awards ceremony.

Since 2020, the GPHG has amplified its field of promotion and action with the creation of an Academy inviting experienced men and women who believe in the common destiny of watchmaking to take part in the various stages of watch selection.

Often referred to as the watch industry “Oscars”, the GPHG is a not-to-be-missed event in the watchmaking calendar and one of the sector’s most famous media showcases.

John Mellencamp Woody Guthrie Prize in Tulsa – Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

The Woody Guthrie Center will honor John Mellencamp with the Woody Guthrie Prize in Tulsa on August 30th, the day before the opening of a special exhibition, “MELLENCAMP,” curated by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and presented in Tulsa by the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

With decades of hit songs that have made a mark on American pop culture, Mellencamp has used his passion, intelligence and wit to champion the everyday man and woman, the less fortunate and the forgotten. Like Woody, Mellencamp has used his artistic gifts to spread a positive message of hope, equality and freedom.

“The Woody Guthrie Center is proud to recognize John Mellencamp for his incredible achievements as he continues the work of Woody Guthrie,” said Deana McCloud, executive director of the Woody Guthrie Center. “Artists working as activists ensure that Woody’s legacy is alive and well, and this award was established to not only recognize achievement, but to remind us all about the importance of taking a stand on human rights issues.”

The Woody Guthrie Prize will be awarded during an intimate program at 8 p.m. August 30th in the FlyLoft, 117 N. Boston Ave., directly above the Woody Guthrie Center. Seating is limited. Tickets are $100 for general admission and $150 for Gold Circle seating, which also includes a sneak peek at the exhibit before it opens August 31st. The program with Mellencamp will be moderated by music journalist Bill Flanagan. Tickets will be on sale July 20, available at the Center or by calling 918-574-2710.

Past recipients of the award include Norman Lear (2017), Kris Kristofferson (2016), Mavis Staples (2015) and Pete Seeger (2014). Previous Woody Guthrie Prize events have been held in New York City, Los Angeles and Tulsa.

The prize event will coincide with the Aug. 31 opening of MELLENCAMP, an exhibit of music, art and artifacts presented by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that tells the story of Mellencamp’s early influences and his role as a champion of heartland values and an advocate for American farmers. Scheduled through the end of 2018, the exhibit will display more than 100 items, including:

• His 1966 silver Honda Scrambler 305 motorcycle
• Personal photographs and ephemera
• Original handwritten lyrics to “Small Town,” “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.,” “Cherry Bomb,” “Pop Singer,” and “Longest Days”
• Mellencamp’s main Dove acoustic guitar used in his songwriting sessions and live performances from the 70s through the 90s
• Items related to the recording of “Jack & Diane”
• Performance outfits
• Several original paintings by Mellencamp

“I would like this exhibit to let people know, or discover, that I really have spent my entire life living the way I want to live, and doing what I want to do,” Mellencamp said. “And, that I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world for being able to do that.”

Mellencamp, a native of Indiana, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and was inducted this year into the Songwriters Hall of Fame by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. In 2012, Mellencamp received The John Steinbeck Award: “In The Souls of the People.” As a co-founder of Farm Aid, Mellencamp has helped give a voice and raise money for dispossessed farm families. He continues to tour and impact the musical landscape with his influence shown through musicians across genres.

Mellencamp has released nearly two dozen albums since the 1970s, with 10 records reaching the platinum sales mark. His most recent album, Sad Clowns and Hillbillies, includes the song “My Soul’s Got Wings,” with lyrics written by Woody Guthrie and music by Mellencamp.

The presenting sponsor for the Tulsa exhibition is Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

About The Woody Guthrie Center

By providing examples of Guthrie’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, we hope to encourage others to find their voices and, through their educational programs, explore the power that lies within the creative process.
