Alice in Chains’ EP ‘SAP’: “There was never a plan to release the songs” – 2023

Alice in Chains:

ALERT…31 YEAR OLD BREAKING NEWS…DREAMS CAN COME TRUE…
I never would have thought that all these years later I’d still be asked to comment on some ‘Sappy’ songs that we had recorded. There was never a plan to release the songs until I had a dream. One of those fully realized, seems like it had already happened, kind of dreams. I know this all sounds like some made up bullshit but it’s true. I told the guys about it and we made the decision to make the dream a reality. There was only one request from us when we brought the EP to our record label. The request was that there would be no promotion for the EP. Just put it in record stores and let people discover it on their own. Well, it appears that some of you have found this little thing we call #SAP. On behalf of the guys and myself, we are forever grateful.

Wikipedia:

Following the tour for Facelift, Alice in Chains entered the studio to record a song for the Cameron Crowe movie Singles, but decided to turn the engagement to their advantage. As the guitarist Jerry Cantrell recalled: “So in the session that was meant for recording that one song [‘Would?’], we ended up demoing about 10 songs, which included all the stuff that ended up on the [1992] Sap EP, ‘Rooster’ and a couple of others from Dirt.”

While in the studio, drummer Sean Kinney had a dream about “making an EP called Sap.” The band decided “not to mess with fate,” and Sap was recorded and mixed in 1991 with producer Rick Parashar at London Bridge Studio.

The EP was recorded in four or five days in November 1991.

Regarding the lyrical content, Cantrell said he wrote “Brother” about his relationship with his younger brother. The song specifically refers to the period after Cantrell’s parents divorced, when his younger brother went off to live with his father while he stayed with his mother, and Cantrell said that the song “was a way of trying to build a bridge.” Commenting on “Got Me Wrong”, Cantrell said he wrote the song about a relationship where one person thinks he or she can change the other person and added that the song speaks of “the different ways that men and women see each other.”

A version of the song “Rooster” was recorded during the sessions for Sap and was to be included on the EP, but the band then decided to use the song on their second full-length album instead. This version is featured on the band’s 1999 box set Music Bank.

Alice in Chains released ‘SAP’ on February 4, 1992, via Columbia Records. The EP was produced by Alice in Chains and Rick Parashar and features guest vocals by Ann Wilson of the band Heart, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Mark Arm of Mudhoney. The track “Got Me Wrong” became a hit two years later after being featured on the soundtrack to the 1994 film Clerks. On January 14, 1994, Sap was certified gold by the RIAA for the sale of more than 500,000 copies.

Alice in Chains Lose “Dear Friend and Longtime Tech” Scott Dachroeden (Scott Doc) to Stage 4 Cancer – 2022 – VIDEO

Alice in Chains:

Still in shock and disbelief over the passing of our beloved brother Scott. Here’s an all too brief glimpse at the beautiful soul we lost. We’re all incredibly grateful and thankful for the years we were able to spend with Scott, and we will forever miss his smile, friendship, and spirit. #fuckcancer

MESSAGE FROM NOVEMBER 6TH:

Our beloved friend and brother Scott Dachroeden (Scott Doc) has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and is currently in the hospital battling this horrible disease.

Scott is a 25-year veteran of the touring and recording industry. He is currently the longest (14 years!) tenured tech with Alice In Chains (as well as their crew chief & staff photographer) and had just completed their summer tour when he was diagnosed.

Scott also works with Tool and Rob Zombie (among many others over the years) as a backline tech on the road, as well as having worked on numerous album recordings from several bands, including:

Tool: Fear Inoculum
Alice In Chains: Rainier Fog
Halestorm: Vicious
Rob Zombie: Spookshow International Live

If you operate in the touring side of the industry, chances are you’ve probably worked with or crossed paths with Scott. His hard work, professionalism, and relentless good humor have made him a beloved member of this community.

Cathouse Flyer: Alice in Chains & Mookie Blaylock (Pearl Jam) via Riki Rachtman – COOL AS CHITZ HISTORY – 2022

Riki Rachtman:

Mookie who?

CONCERT: February 12, 1991

Wikipedia:

The Mookie Blaylock 1991 United States Tour was a concert tour by the American rock band Pearl Jam when the band was still known as Mookie Blaylock. It was the band’s first tour after having played its first few shows in late 1990.

The short tour of the United States focused on the West Coast. The majority of the shows found Pearl Jam serving as the opening act for Alice in Chains on the band’s Facelift tour. Bassist Jeff Ament said, “We were then in the mode of ‘Well, we’ve got to write a bunch of songs.’ It wasn’t long after that we got a tour with Alice in Chains. It was kind of how we wanted it to be, we didn’t want to fuck around. I think Stone (Gossard) and I both knew the potential that he and I had together—but we needed to get out and play and get better.”

Following the tour, the band soon signed to Epic Records. However, concerns about trademark issues with the name “Mookie Blaylock” necessitated a name change; the band’s name became “Pearl Jam”. This was Pearl Jam’s only tour with original drummer Dave Krusen. Krusen left the band in May 1991 following the completion of the recording sessions for the band’s debut album, Ten. Footage from the February 10, 1991 concert at The Bacchanal in San Diego, California can be found on Alice in Chains’ Music Bank: The Videos DVD.

Alice in Chains Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Tequila Barrels – All Secrets Known – 2022 – ORDER

Alice in Chains:

3 years ago, we collaborated with Few Spirits to make a special batch of whiskey as a nod to our album Black Gives Way To Blue. We’ve decided to bring back All Secrets Known – a high-rye bourbon, finished in ex-tequila barrels for 6 months.

Order yours now @ this location.

FEW Spirits & grunge icon Alice In Chains have collaborated to bring fans a rockstar whiskey experience… again. While the first release of this whiskey came in 2019, this year we only have an extremely limited amount of this delicious bourbon whiskey available. What is it? Our iconic FEW Bourbon has been finished in ex-tequila barrels for 6 months, and then is bottled at 50.5% abv, or 101 proof, to bring an edgy, limited, and unique release to whiskey and grunge fans everywhere. Called ‘All Secrets Known’, the bourbon gets its name from the band’s popular 2009 album, ‘Black Gives Way to Blue’. So, what’s the secret with this bourbon? Crack open a bottle and see for yourself.

This whiskey’s iconic label was designed by cover label artist Justin Helton at the request of the band.

This whiskey is full of the bold, sweet and spicy Bourbon notes that are the hallmark of FEW.

The profile has grassy, agave undertones that accentuate the top notes of the Bourbon.

Alice in Chains’ William DuVall: “Honored to have the Williams sisters, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, attend our show in West Palm Beach” – 2022

William DuVall:

Excellence personified. So honored to have the Williams sisters, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, attend our show in West Palm Beach. So great to see them rocking out down front and sidestage. Even better to find that they’re so cool and down to earth as people. Like meeting long lost cousins at a family gathering, only they just happen to be, in my opinion, the best to ever grace a tennis court, as well as being genuine AIC fans. Awesome night.

Alice in Chains “Them Bones” Video Director, Rocky Schenck, Looks Back on the “Extraordinary Experience” – 30 – Behind the Scenes VIDEO – Making of – Outtakes – 2022

Alice in Chains:

Dirt30 | From longtime collaborator and creative director, Rocky Schenck:

“Thirty years ago… I had an extraordinary experience directing the video for Alice In Chains’ “Them Bones” – still one of my favorites! I worked with this great group of guys for many years, and together we created some interesting photographic and cinematic art… and had a lot of fun doing it! This band always encouraged me to push my imagination to the very edge, and occasionally over the edge. It was extremely hard work, but we had lots of laughs and like any creative collaboration, plenty of drama!

I sketched a crude drawing of the set I envisioned – a large dirt hole (or stylized ‘grave’) with dripping, broken sewer lines protruding from dirt walls surrounding the band, who performed amongst pools of toxic waste. A nuclear sky with blood red lighting would bathe the environment, with white spotlights on each band member and lightning and wind effects added. I realized that the environment I was imagining needed to be manufactured on a sound stage with a fantastical set, similar in vibe as the artificial world we created when I photographed the band’s Dirt album cover earlier in the year.

I wanted the camera moves to be strangely accelerated and aggressive – moving from extreme wide angles to tight closeups in seconds. To achieve this effect, I had the band members perform in slow-motion to the song played at half-speed, as the camera operator and crane moves were executed at full speed. When the film and music were transferred at normal speed, the camera movements became twice as fast, and the band’s performance appeared somewhat normal… but just a bit ‘off.’ The band was aware of the result I was aiming for with the quick camera moves, and deliberately added abrupt moves during their ‘slow-motion’ performance to great effect.

The crew was remarkable – from the cinematographer to the gaffers and grips to the art crew and the editor – all extraordinary!”

Jerry Cantrell: “Some nights you feel all alone and you want to quit” – 2022 – TOUR

Jerry Cantrell: Some nights you feel all alone and you want to quit. Delirious, haggard, a barely functioning phlegm factory. Nashville you carried me through the early tough rounds and the band rallied and leaned in to get me over the finish line. Tonight was a battle from the ropes and you all wouldn’t let me go down. Thank you for a truly memorable show I won’t soon forget. I was not going to miss this show at the Ryman.
