Drummer Dave Lombardo on Mike Patton: “He’s feeling better by the sound of his responses and emails” – 2022 – Mr. Bungle

CONSEQUENCE:. Dave Lombardo would certainly be a front-runner for the “most valuable player” award for heavy music.

The legendary drummer spoke to Heavy Consequence about the latest on his multiple bands, including Dead Cross, Misfits, Testament, and more. You can read the entire interview @ this location.

An excerpt from the interview has been provided below.

Are you looking forward to the upcoming Mr. Bungle shows this December?

Dave Lombardo:

Yes! I hate to be sarcastic but, of course. Mr. Bungle’s going to go out in South America. It’s gonna be huge. It’s gonna be great. We’re all excited and we’re all looking forward to it. So that could be a step in the right direction for the future of Dead Cross playing some shows.

Mike Patton, who’s both in Dead Cross and Mr. Bungle, recently opened up about his mental health issues. As a touring musician, can you talk about how it can affect you mentally?

For me, the only thing that affects me is sometimes you go through these moments where you’re like, “Fuck … I miss home.” You miss your loved ones. “I miss my wife, I miss my kids.” That goes through your mind. That’s challenging. But for me personally, I don’t really drink on the road. I have an occasional beer after the show or maybe a glass of wine with dinner. I actually get healthier on the road than I do at home — at home I’m cooking. I’m involved in the kitchen or going out and eating. But on the road, I kind of watch what I eat, I make sure that I try to stay as healthy. I take my vitamins and stay as healthy as possible — ’cause you don’t wanna get sick on the road, and you just try to focus on your health. You gotta go on stage practically five times a week. And the music that we’re playing isn’t anything that’s soft and relaxing or anything I could play with brushes. I mean, this is hardcore music, so I have to be on top of my game physically instead of getting wasted every night. It’s not conducive to a drummer.

How is Mike Patton doing these days?

He’s doing good. He’s feeling better by the sound of his responses and emails. He’s optimistic and looking forward to the future.

Mike Patton on the Pandemic & Canceled Faith No More Dates: “It affected me mentally. I don’t know why, but the drinking just … happened.” – 2022

The Guardian: Mike Patton on the return of Dead Cross: ‘This record was forged through Covid, cancer and alcoholism’

You can read the entire article @ this location. An excerpt from the interview has been provided below.

EXCERPT:

Dead Cross’s second album, II. “This record was forged through Covid, cancer and alcoholism,” he summarizes – and the pain becomes audible through nine tracks of anarchic thrash and punk. The cancer was Crain’s: the guitarist was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in July 2019. “He’s the strongest fucking guy,” says Patton. “He’s not the guy you’d think would come down with cancer. But he did, and a lot of that went into the Dead Cross record: a lot of weird pain and fear. It’s hard to explain, but it made the record better.”

“My initial response to the pandemic was: ‘I love this shit!’,” he admits with a laugh. “It allowed me to be an antisocial motherfucker! I had maybe three months of that: ‘This is fucking awesome!’ Then something changed – and not for the better.”

As the pandemic progressed, the singer grew depressed. He was diagnosed with agoraphobia. He began drinking heavily. Fans were none the wiser until December 2021, when Faith No More – who had already rescheduled what were going to be their first shows in four years due to Covid – cancelled all touring plans.

“Because I was isolated so much, going outside was a hard thing to do,” Patton says, “and that’s a horrible thing. And the idea of doing more Faith No More shows – it was stressful. It affected me mentally. I don’t know why, but the drinking just … happened.”

Faith No More have no plans to reschedule their cancelled gigs, Patton admits. However, he is returning to the stage in December, playing across South America with Mr Bungle. He struggles with remembering the exact date he stopped drinking, but says he has now been sober “for a while” and is “doing pretty good”. He is excited to get back on the road, “but I’m also afraid”, he says.

Of what? “I’m afraid of myself. The band is rock solid and I want to make sure that I bring it. There are a few issues going on.” The question of what those issues are receives an agitated growl. “I don’t know if I wanna tell you.”

Faith No More’s Mike Patton Diagnosed w/ Agoraphobia: “I became completely isolated and almost antisocial” – 2022 – Interview – Mr. Bungle – Dead Cross

Rolling Stone: EXCLUSIVE: Last year, Mike Patton canceled tour dates with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. Now he’s finally ready to talk about the crippling agoraphobia diagnosis that is keeping him off the road. You can read the entire interview @ this location.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT:

When Faith No More and Mr. Bungle canceled their concerts, you released a statement citing problems with your mental health. Can you talk about what you were going through?

Mike Patton:

It’s still going on — but it’s better. [Pauses]. It’s easy to blame it on the pandemic. But I’ll be honest, man: At the beginning of the pandemic, I was like, “This is fucking great. I can stay home and record.” I’ve got a home studio. So I was like, “Yeah, what’s the big deal?” And then something clicked, and I became completely isolated and almost antisocial [and] afraid of people.

That sort of anxiety, or whatever you want to call it, led to other issues, which I choose not to discuss. But I got some professionals helping me, and now I’m feeling better and getting closer to diving back in. Towards the end of the year, I’ll be doing my first shows in, like, two years, which is the longest time since I started doing this, that I’ve been out of the game.

When you say you had other issues, do you mean substances? Alcohol?

It was a little bit of everything. But mostly, in my experience, it was mostly mental. I saw some therapists and all that stuff, which is the first time I ever had to do that in my life. And they basically diagnosed me as having agoraphobia; like, I was afraid of people. I got freaked out by being around people. And maybe that was because I spent two years basically indoors during Covid. I don’t know. Maybe it reinforced feelings that I already had. But just knowing about it, talking about it, really helped. And we’ll see how it goes in December.

At what point did you realize, “I have a problem”?

Right around the time that Faith No More was about to go back on the road. That’s when I kind of lost it, and it was ugly and not cool. A few days before we were supposed to go on the road. I told the guys, “Hey man, I don’t think I can do it.” Somehow my confidence was broken down. I didn’t want to be in front of people, which is weird because I spent half of my life doing that.

Had you been rehearsing with Faith No More?

Nope. It was right before our first rehearsal, and I just freaked out. I just said, “I can’t do it.” They had been rehearsing so [pauses] If I were them, I’d be really pissed off at me. And they were. And they probably still are. But it’s just about being true to yourself and knowing what your limits are. And I knew that if I kept pushing, it could have been some sort of disastrous result. It was just like, “Goddamn it. Maybe I don’t need to do this. Even though I agreed to do it, and it’s gonna bum a lot of people out. I gotta take care of myself.” So I’m getting better at that.

Where do things stand with Faith No More now?

Radio silence. [Laughs]. I don’t know. We may reschedule stuff; we may not. I’ll just leave it at that. It’s a little confusing and complicated. So if we do, we do. If we don’t, that’s cool, too.

Faith No More / Mr. Bungle Cancel 2021 Tour Dates Due to Mike Patton’s “Mental Health”

Statement from Mike Patton:

BAND STATEMENT:
To say that we feel shattered by these cancellations would be a complete understatement. It has been a real challenge to return to this music after a 5 year absence, but we have been working hard for a few months now, and these last few rehearsals left no doubt that we were back to top form, which makes this statement very difficult to write.

Coming on almost two years of pandemic and lack of work, it has been heartbreaking to give our crew the news. We consider our crew like family. And then, equally importantly, we are aware of what this means to our fans, who have been patiently supporting us– waiting, as we have, for a break in this frustrating situation. Many folks have taken isolation quite hard, and patiently waited as shows have been postponed time and time again. This will be tough for them.

And yet in spite of all this, we have a family member who needs help. We believe that forging ahead with these dates would have had a profoundly destructive effect on Mike, whose value to us as a brother means more to us than his job as singer. He can count on our 100% support to do what he needs to do to get things right. Just as we also ask for your support right now.

Thank you for continuing to believe in us.

-Bill, Jon, Mike B. & Roddy

Dave Lombardo: Check Out the New SATANIC PLANET VIDEO “Strangers” – 2021

Dave Lombardo: Check out the new Satanic Planet video, ‘Strangers’!

SATANIC PLANET “Strangers” from the band’s debut album available from Three One G and The Satanic Temple.

PURCHASE

SATANIC PLANET is the creation of Lucien Greaves (The Satanic Temple co-founder and spokesperson), Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, The Misfits, Mr. Bungle, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Cross), and Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Swing Kids, Deaf Club). With the birth of Satanic Planet, hip-hop producer Henshaw and punk provocateur Pearson joined co-founder and spokesperson of The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves– the most prominent and outspoken contemporary Satanist in the world. Greaves has gained international attention as an advocate for religious liberty and the voice of the Satanic Reformation, delivering lectures nationwide and featured in national media outlets including MSNBC, NPR, Huffington Post Live, CNN, Harper’s Monthly, Newsweek, Fox News, Vice, Salon, Rolling Stone, and many more. As the trio were diligently working, and nearly completed with, the music for their debut album, the worldwide pandemic hit, seemingly bringing things to a halt. However, with the onset of this new way of living, the newly-formed band was in a unique position to enlist the legendary Dave Lombardo, who found himself not touring for the first time in years, and suddenly having more time to work in his home studio on projects that interested him. With the addition of this iconic drummer, Satanic Planet was complete. Along the way, an eclectic range of guest appearances arise, including Cattle Decapitation’s Travis Ryan, Nomi Abadi, Silent’s Jung Sing, Shiva Honey, Eric Livingston (also known as his artist moniker, First Church of the Void), and Hexa’s Carrie Feller. This collaboration embraces the avant garde to create sci-fi sermons that range from doom and industrial to evil exotica.

Tomahawk: ‘Tonic Immobility’ NEW ALBUM/SONG/VIDEO – 2021 – Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, Duane Denison, John Stanier

Tomahawk: Tonic Immobility, our new album coming March 26th on Ipecac Recordings. Check out “Business Casual” and pre-order the album now!

PRE-ORDER

Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard/Unsemble), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle/Fantômas), Mike Patton (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, etc.) and John Stanier (Helmet/Battles), return with their first full-length album in eight years.

“Tonic Immobility could just be something in the air we’re feeling,” says Denison. “It’s been a rough year between the pandemic and everything else. A lot of people feel somewhat powerless and stuck as they’re not able to make a move without second guessing themselves or worrying about the outcomes. For as much as the record possibly reflects that, it’s also an escape from the realities of the world. We’re not wallowing in negativity or getting political. For me, rock has always been an alternate reality to everything else. I feel like this is yet another example.”

Pre-orders are available now, with the album available in the following formats: digital, CD digipak, and 180 gram LP in textured gatefold packaging. Vinyl variants include standard black, coke bottle clear (indie retail exclusive – 5000 available), opaque metallic silver (Ipecac webstore exclusive – 2000 available), and crystal clear (Newbury Comics exclusive – 1000 available).

Mr. Bungle “Eracist” New SONG / VIDEO – 2020

Dave Lombardo: Erase your face with the new Mr. Bungle song and video!

Mr. Bungle return with The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo, in stores October 30th! Pre-order the CD, Digital, Cassette, Multiple Colored 2LP Vinyl and Merch Bundles at this location.

Trevor Dunn, Mike Patton and Trey Spruance are joined by Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo for the band’s first album in 21 years!

Video for “Eracist” directed by Derrick Scocchera

The 11-song release features tracks written by the Eureka, Calif.-born band for their 1986 cassette only demo as well as a reimagined cover of the S.O.D. classic “Hypocrites / Habla Español O Muere” (a.k.a. “Speak English or Die”) and Corrosion of Conformity’s “Loss For Words.” A video for “Raping Your Mind” is available now (https://youtu.be/3U5ZKKxqUzY). The album was produced by Mr. Bungle, recorded by Husky Höskulds at Studio 606, and mixed by Jay Ruston. Rhea Perlman narrates “Anarchy Up Your Anus.”

“Recording THIS music with THESE guys was an enormous head-rush of virtuosity and surprises every day in the studio,” explains Patton. “Trey’s video game-esque solos, Scott’s bionic right hand and cyborg-like precision, Dave’s caveman-meets-Bobby Brady-like drum fills, Trevor’s solid foundation and laser-focus to detail. There is nothing sweeter than getting your ass kicked by true comrades…where everyone has a singular drive and mission.”

Trevor Dunn adds: “Recording this record felt like we were finally utilizing our Ph.Ds in Thrash Metal. All we had to do was go back to our original professors for some additional guidance and talk them into joining us. Turns out we were A+ students. We even went for extra credit by revisiting some tunes that we’d given up on back in the day. It was less like a trip of nostalgia and more like the refining of an original, worthy document. We were haunted for 35 years by the fact that this music wasn’t given it’s due respect. Now we can die.”

The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo track list:
1. Grizzly Adams
2. Anarchy Up Your Anus
3. Raping Your Mind
4. Hypocrites / Habla Español O Muere
5. Bungle Grind
6. Methematics
7. Eracist
8. Spreading The Thighs of Death
9. Loss For Words
10. Glutton For Punishment
11. Sudden Death

Mr. Bungle was formed in an impoverished lumber and fishing town by a trio of curious, volatile teenagers. Trey Spruance, Mike Patton and Trevor Dunn beget the amorphous “band” in 1985 up in Humboldt County, Calif., sifting through a variety of members until around 1989 when they settled on a lineup that managed to get signed to Warner Bros. Records. No one really knows how this happened and it remains a complete mystery that even the algorithms of the internet can’t decode. Up until 2000 they released three albums (Mr. Bungle in 1991, Disco Volante in 1995 and California in 1999), toured a good portion of the Western hemisphere and avoided any sort of critical acclaim. Some argue that the band subsequently broke up but there is also no proof of this. What is true is that they took 20 years off from performing under said moniker while they pursued various other musics that, in contrast, paid the rent.

fullinbloom · Faith No More Producer Talks Mike Patton’s 1990 SPIN Masturbation Interview

Excerpt from Mike Patton’s 1990 SPIN Magazine Interview:

Masturbation is a lot easier to do than relating to someone,” says Patton. “It’s like playing a video machine. You can relate to a machine a lot easier than a human being. You can just pound yourself for hours and hours and not think about it. With sex, no matter how great it is, there’s always something missing.”

I ask Mike if he masturbates any less now that he has legions of girl fans eagerly offering themselves to him. “Not at all,” he responds. “The only difference now is that I masturbate in front of people. There was this girl in Philadelphia—I hung out with her all day and we ended up in my room. I ended up masturbating while she watched.” Safe sex? “No, not at all. It’s entirely different. Masturbation is like this knot I have inside of me that I can’t untie.” –READ MORE

Listen to Zeus! Featuring Mike Patton – VIDEO – Really Bad Music For Really Bad People – 2020

Zeus! Feat. Mike Patton
Video by Displaced/ Replaced

Really Bad Music For Really Bad People: The Cramps as Heard Through the Meat Grinder of Three One G available from www.threeoneg.com

Eighteen years ago, Three One G Records flew in the face of Queen purists with the release of Dynamite With A Laserbeam: Queen As Heard Through the Meatgrinder of Three One G, the label’s 20th release. On it, bands like Melt-Banana, Weasel Walter, The Locust, Bastard Noise and The Blood Brothers unapologetically tackled some of the most beloved and universally recognizable music in popular culture and made it nasty, noisy, and brutal– and they did so with nothing but love and respect. This was followed by an equally bold tribute to Australian avant-garde legends The Birthday Party, entitled Release The Bats. More frenetic energy from the likes of bands like Cattle Decapitation, Das Oath, SSion and Some Girls, more chaotic feedback giving way to unsettling synth lines, and still (knock on wood) not a lawsuit in sight.

It is only fitting, then, that Three One G’s one hundredth release be another tribute, this time to an iconic band known for its raunchy and pure punk spirit, all while looking effortlessly cool: The Cramps. For the label’s third comp, the lineup of musicians enlisted to take part is even more diverse, including the likes of Chelsea Wolfe, Daughters, Mike Patton, and Metz, among others– all members, in some way or another, of the extended Three One G family. Here you’ll hear everything from Cumbia-style Cramps as interpreted by Sonido De La Frontera, to Panicker’s electronic dance-centric distorted version of “I’m Cramped”. Just as The Cramps mastered the art of covering music through their own warped lens, Three One G carries on the torch of re-imagining songs with swagger and style, making it their own while honoring a band whose influence on the label is obvious.
